Cedar Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The food is always top notch as well as the atmosphere and service. I had the rack of lamb as part of the pre-theatre menu and it was prepared perfectly. I was happy to learn that Cedar will be re-opening for lunch. They are expanding upstairs, but still keeping the lower level dining area which has a wonderful atmosphere. Excellent job Mikias and the enter Cedar team for making this a special dining experience.
We enjoyed the pre=theater 3-course menu - a good value at $35 per person. Cedar Restaurant is below ground level, so be aware that you will be walking down a set of stairs from the street entrance. That said, they've done a nice job with the decor, so you don't feel like you're dining in a converted basement. The food was excellent but our only criticism is that service was slower than it should have been for the pre-theater crowd, particularly the time it took for the first course to arrive. We had to ask for the check with dessert and rushed to our show, barely making it for curtain time.
our family includes a vegetarian AND some serious meat eaters. The vegetarian was well-fed by a full vegan menu and the serious meat eaters were happy with the beef tenderloin. Other good choices were the crab cake side - a a great first course 2 crab cakes ready for sharing the lobster in butter also a close to main amount first course. And delicious as well. Also recommend the wild mushroom casserole. All in all a high quality meal. We will definitely return - at Christmas when our our family will be back in town.
The food at Cedar is always excellent, and that was the case on Thanksgiving. The service at Cedar is sometimes spotty, and that was the case on Thanksgiving. Pairings weren't always served together, and I was told gluten-free bread was available, an order had been put in for it, and then it never arrived. Small frustrations, but frustrations none the less.
The frittata was very different than expected. The Burger and Steak was absolutely great. The waitress acted like she was having a bad day. She was unfriendly. It seemed she was having the worse day of her life. She didn't check on us. Didn't provide a status of our order. Did not say goodbye. The other two waiters were assisting her and they were very nice and considerate. They provided the status of order and brought it out.
Great pre-fixe pre-theater offering. If you are a member of the Shakespeare Theatre Bard Card, you can get select discounts on parking , wine, or specialty drinks too. Fantastic server (Lauren); outstanding chefs; interesting drinks from Sean the bartender. Nice vegetarian options. All around perfect.
It had been close to two years since my friend and I last dined at Cedar. The menu is limited, but very interesting. My friend had an appetizer neither of us seen before: a petite lobster tail. It was served with parsnip puree & sautéed kale in a cider reduction. For her entrée, my friend had pan-seared rockfish served over orzo in a light lemon sauce with grilled baby root veggies. For my appetizer, I had brie baked in fuille de brick and served with fig jam, roasted pecans and toasted brioche crostini. I then had beef tenderloin with baby root veggies and roasted purple potatoes & onion in an awaze sauce. We finished with espresso crème brûlée served on an almond cake. It was all delicious! One thing we thoroughly enjoy about places like Cedar is the servers know how to be attentive without hovering so allowing us to savor the evening.
Everything was great. Gracious hostess. Lauren recommended the daily soup--butternut squash and the fish of the day--rockfish. The soup was excellent, the fish was light and moist and the accompanying vegetables were terrific. Cozy relaxed atmosphere makes you feel like you could be anywhere in the world.
Another great dining experience. We ordered from the vegan menu and everything was phenomenal (cauliflower/broccoli soup, Caesar salad, ravioli, and linguine). The manager/owner came to our table to greet us and make sure we enjoyed our meal. A hidden gem in DC and one of my favorites.
We had a lovely meal. One of us had the vegan ravioli and Spanish onion soup; the other had the garganelli, brussels sprouts and chocolate-peanut butter mousse. All was very good. Service was friendly and prompt. It would be good to have more nonsweet mocktail options.
Really love this restaurant, second time back which is a rarity for me. great pre-theatre options, but we enjoyed selecting their salad (yummy), the brie appetizer - pretty and tasty, the sausage and the chicken. it was lovely, quiet setting and I highly recommend
Great food and lots of vegan options! The service was rather slow, so make sure you have lots of time, but the food is worth the wait. There was a good wine list for bottles, but the selection for by the glass is a little limited. There were many cocktail options.
It will be very hard to find the words to describe how incredible our 3 year anniversary was at Cedar but I'll try.
We began with a very warm welcome from Mikias, the owner and found ourselves at a cozy table in the corner. We started off with delicious cocktails, my boyfriend had the Gold Rush and I had the Cocktail No. 9 which is bartenders choice (it was a refreshing Cucumber Gin Martini). For our food we were able to try the oven baked brie, the bacon cherry glazed pork chops (a combination that was incredibly decadent, sweet and savory) , the chicken supreme (perfectly cooked chicken with a bit of crisp on the skin, stuffed with a spinach goat cheese mix, on top of spinach risotto and mushroom puree-- truly everything I wanted and more), and had an incredible strawberry cheesecake square with fresh which was the creamiest cheesecake I've ever had with fresh strawberries from that week's local farmers market. Not to mention, we were surprised with the beautiful plate design helping us celebrate! I had only mentioned it in our Open Table reservation and Mikias and crew went above and beyond to truly make it feel like our own personal celebration.
The atmosphere was cozy and we could have a great conversation without having to strain to hear or yell towards one another. Mikias was incredibly warm and welcoming the entire evening, which truly is just his way and his staff were kind, knowledgeable, and the right amount of attentive you want during a meal.
If you are looking for great food and a staff/restaurant you can rely on, go to Cedar. Use Cedar's food at your next event. Bring a work event/rehearsal dinner, etc there. You will not be disappointed by the service and product.
Looking for something a bit unusual, that you probably couldn't prepare at home? Perhaps something that most groceries stores wouldn't even carry? Then this is the place. The menu includes meats such as quail, wild boar, elk sausage, and other treats that you just don't find too often. And everything is just right. Be prepared to part with a pretty significant chunk of change (these items are NOT cheap). If you're an adventurous diner, then this is for you.
We booked Cedar in order to have a very nice family get together while we were all in town for the long Labor Day weekend. The location was perfect for us being close to the Mall and we could not have been happier. Lauren was our waitress and she was a delight. Service and food were top notch. We enjoyed the menu and were pleasantly surprised with the exotic selection which we sampled and which added a great deal of fun to our evening. The only reason that Ambiance received only four stars was because the entrance was under renovation. The Ceder will become our go-to place when in central Washington DC.
