Absolutely delicious! General Lu’s chicken was amazing and had great flavor. Coconut bbq shrimp and grits were also so good!

I will return! We had a great late lunch here on a Friday afternoon. The oysters on the half -shell while not Gulf oysters and somewhat smaller, were terrific in taste and texture. I was not crazy over the cucumber based mignonette sauce but then again, I am not a cucumber fan. The traditional New Orleans BBQ shrimp dish had a couple twists: one is that the sauce was adobo based and second served over grits. It all worked well. The other dish was a smoked salmon flatbread that was perfect with thin cracker like crust. There was no bread for the table included. So, that was a negative because it was a late lunch and we were hungry! We ordered a portion of their rustic olive bread and it was outstanding! However, it came as our appetizers were served so it did not help us with a nibble while waiting for our meal.

Scored a reservation for Mother's day brunch at a table on the porch with a comfortable view of the beautiful courtyard and Magazine St. The food and cocktails were outstanding and the service was excellent. We went back in the evening to sit at the upstairs bar for a cocktail and the bartender was not very open or friendly, but the drinks again were well above par. The ambience overall is classic and charming. Highly recommend!

This was my second most favorite restaurant in the city and one of the more memorable ones too. The decor and the fact that its inside of a historic mansion is just the cherry on the cake. We had the whole grilled redfish and it was perfect. Theres nothing more to say than perfect.

I have been to Cavan before for dinner and have always loved it, so I suggested it for a friends bday who hadnt eaten there. They dont open for lunch and were that day for jazz fest. The place was empty. We were the only ones there. Our host/server seemed indifferent at first, maybe she liked not having any customers but she did a 180 and it all worked out. She knew the menu well and a smile was drawn on her face the entire rest of our time there. The food however was not goot at all. I ordered the fish of the day which I think was red fish with some sweet potatoes. I got 1 oz of fish and 10lbs of sweet potatoes. The fish barely had any taste to it. I could taste the sauce and it was sweet and would have been good if the actual fish had some of that flavor infused in it. My first thought when I ate my first bite was to add salt and I NEVER add salt to my food. My friends almost all ordered a lettuce shrimp taco and they all added salt to theirs and I also didnt hear any of them rave about the food- which to me is very odd at Cavan. I have taken 2 groups of friends for dinner and people are always very pleased with the ambiance, service and food. Stick to dinner if you decide to try it out- allthough Im not sure if the kitchen staff changed from my previous visit or if we just had an off kitchen day. Also the girl that works there from Seattle does killer capuccino’s. Good luck!

This place is awesome! The atmosphere is energetic and lively! Great cocktails and the menu offers something for everyone. It’s updated often to offer a fresh taste to those who frequent it which is often. It’s one of those places the locals go over the usual “touristy” selections. I don’t think you’ll be dissatisfied!!!

Loved it. My only issue is that it is extremely loud. Not a problem but one of our group has some hearing loss. They happily moved us outside which was great. Service was outstanding!

It is a shame that Cavan does not appear on many lists containing New Orleans' best restaurants. The dinning experience has to be one of the best in New Orleans. A mix of a beautiful dining room, excellent service and most of all, delectable food. Can't wait to be back.

Something must have been off in the kitchen. Waited an hour between appetizer and main course. All the tables around us had the same problem. Wait staff offered no explanation or apology. Very disappointing.

Beautiful restaurant but very average food. Service was mediocre and a bit surly. When I asked the waitress to check on our entrees (after 45 mins) she said, well you did order a well done steamy ”, implying that it was our fault that the kitchen was slow. Then the food came and the steak was medium rare!

It’s a shame because the restaurant is stunning.

Too many other great places in NOLA-skip this one.

WONDERFUL place outside to eat! GREAT FOOD! EXTREMELY NICE WAITRESS and MANAGER !We sat outside along with 2 other large tables at the same time so waitress had a lot of drink orders at once BUT were very accommodating and apologetic! I think people, especially during Jazz fest have to realize this. IT WAS WONDERFUL!
FOOD was delicious..2 of us had the fish and I had the salmon poke tacos that were AMAZING! Would go there again tonight!

My 3rd time at Cavan and it just gets better. We ordered the whole fish, shrimp & grits, strawberry salad, and scallops each was delicious with distinct flavors. Next week we have reservations for a party of 10. Definitely getting the whole fish, maybe two. My friends are in for second week of Jazz Fest and Cavan will be a hit for these Cali foodies.

Cavan is fast becoming our go-to restaurant every time we visit New Orleans. It is classy yet casual and has been our favorite meal of each trip the past couple of times now. To us, Cavan offers the perfect atmosphere -- it is on Magazine Street in a beautiful mansion that has been lovingly restored without sacrificing authenticity and character. The restaurant manages to offer a coziness and buzz and was fairly busy the most recent night we visited, yet we could easily hold conversations with each other (the latter part was not true in a couple of other New Orleans restaurants that we visited this time around). Cavan also has patio dining that quite a few people were taking advantage of while we were there. There are two charming bars -- one upstairs and one downstairs -- that offer daily happy hour until 6 p.m. on weeknights. I had a strawberry Pimm's cup (I can't remember what it was called on their excellent craft cocktail menu), but I literally wanted to eat it!

As great as Cavan's atmosphere is, the best part of all was the food. Their boudin tater tots were piping hot and offered a great start to the meal. I had the jerk spiced fish which was succulent and satisfied my high tolerance for "kick"; the sweet potato hash that accompanied it provided just the right balance. My husband enjoyed his shrimp and grits, and we both completely polished off our shared portion of strawberry pound cake.

Cavan's service both at the bar and the restaurant was friendly and prompt. I highly recommend a trip out of the French Quarter and the other typical tourist locations to this gem of a restaurant. You won't regret it!

Wow! 10/10 for amazing food and service from Sarah! We had cocktails, wine, appetizers, entrees, desserts, and coffee. Each meal was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The cocktails were amazing and just what I wanted after describing what I liked to her ... and a perfect recommendation for the wine with the meal.
The actual house the restaurant resides in has a unique ambience and history.
If you are looking for something that is not a "New Orleans tourist trap" and has fabulous service, food and drinks, this is the place!

Food was delicious, it was nice to have the option of outside seating on such a beautiful night, and there is a great wine selection. The only positive to say about our server is that he was polite. We were given 2 menus for 4 people; when we asked for 2 more menus, he just shrugged his shoulders w/a light laughter. We didn't want to insist and appear to be rude, so the 4 of us ordered off 2 menus. We ordered the whole fish w/side dishes to share. When he brought us salad plates for our entree, we had to ask for dinner plates. He was extremely laid back. I would recommend this restaurant, but definitely w/another server.

I loved the atmosphere! The service was excellent too!

The food was disappointing. The Gumbo was very salty & luke warm. The crawfish beignets was not beignets, or what I was expecting a beignet to be....it was more like a coffecake with a crawfish sauce on top. The other person had the steak & eggs and said the meat was tough.

Overall, disappointing, but will try again at dinner.
