I was invited to Cattleya Wine Bar in the Halekulani Hotel for a belated birthday celebration by a friend. Cattleya is a new, open from 4 to 7 on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It's just inside the Orchids restaurant. We found ourselves the only patrons on Thursday evening. Our server, Kale, was very personable and helped us with the wine list and ordering food. My host likes whites and I helped her select a 3oz pour of Montevetrano Bianco. I was going to start with sparkling wine but decided upon a rosé, selecting the Ame du Vin from Provence. Unfortunately, it wasn’t available so Kale suggested the Marissa Cuomo Rosato from Amalfi. It was nice yet austere, perhaps due to the limestone and dolomite soil. I thought of a pinkish facsimile of a Chablis. We started with the Charcuterie Plate, consisting of 3 types of meats, assorted cheeses, olives and baby carrots accompanied by a basket of lavosh and breads. The prosciutto was the best of the lot and I liked all of the cheeses and olives. I just wish the plate had some fruit to pair with the cheese. Next, the Kona Lobster and Kahuku Shrimp Gyoza. There were 4 large gyoza, with a dish of spicy Ponzu sauce. The gyoza was brimming with lobster and shrimp meat ... delicious! I was going to order a red (because I like reds) but Kale suggested the Kellerei Cantine Terlan Pinot Grigio. It was a nice wine; I think I would have preferred something drier. There are 8 whites on the menu, from Italy, Spain, France and Turkey. Last, Truffle Fries. I intended to get the Prime Beef Tartar but the charcuterie plate was filling. Kale suggested the 2020 Terre Nere Etna Rosso; I finally got my glass of red. I don’t often drink Italian wines, but these wines opened my eyes to another part of the world. Final thoughts … We enjoyed Cattleya. There are 28 wines available; 17 from Italy. There are 11 food choices; I would like to see more than one fresh seafood option and perhaps something like bone marrow or foie gras.

Wines were very good. I loved the choice of three glass sizes: 3,6 & 9 ounce pours. Food was good. Would have been nice to have a few more choices.

Service was fantastic at beginning then it went to terrible at the end. At the end our waiter seemed to ignore us we were wanting another wine but he would look the other way when he would go by our table. He made an appearance when we got someone else to get our bill. Charcuterie board was ok nothing special. No crackers or bread no spreads just 3 meats 2 cheese olives and carrot sticks.

Have to say we were pretty disappointed by the overall experience at Cattleya Wine Bar. It is situated right next to Orchids in the Halukalani Hotel. Wine options and service from the sommelier and waiter to help choose the wines was phenomenal. Food choices were good but when the food arrived it was incredibly underwhelming. The charcuterie board didn’t come with any crackers or bread, or any kind of spread, jam or fruit paste. It also had raw carrots with no kind of dip to put them in. The gyoza we ordered looked over cooked and as though it’d been bought from a supermarket, not made in a high end restaurant kitchen. We also had to ask for the sauce that it came with. We’re grateful that the wine was delicious and the location was very special because overall the experience was kind of average. Especially when the food comes from the same kitchen as the Orchids restaurant that is situated within the same seating/table layout space.

A hidden gem in Halekulani. Stumbled upon this place in OpenTable. We were looking for something different to do in Waikiki. And found Cattleya. And we are so thankful we did. The wine selection is unique. Not the traditional cabs or chardonnays. Wines from all over the Mediterranean. The food is just as unique as the wine. They have a to die for steak tartare. A yummy open face baguette with burrata cream. A huge charcuterie board. Their plates are meant to be shared. No one is going home hungry. Perhaps the best part of Cattleya is Kale. He was warm, friendly, knowledgeable and best of all down to earth. He made wine tasting fun and accessible. He convinced me to try a white wine. I never drink white wine. And he introduced me to a white wine that I can say I loved. If you are looking for a fun night with friends, family or a date night, you have to check out Cattleya. It is worth the trip into Waikiki.
