Drove a long way to come eat here but unfortunately it wasn’t what we expected. Took them forever to bring our food and drinks. The food was okay, I heard great things about the restaurant maybe they were having a bad night.
Nothing to give but compliments
We did enjoy the food but there were some pretty serious lapses in table service. There are so many student trainees there that making your way through the restaurant can be a challenge, so I was surprised to feel forgotten so often. Our waiter was rather hard to understand, and disappeared for a long time between the apps and main courses. This left us with nearly empty water glasses, having to refill our own wine glasses, and we were not served bread (an Italian restaurant with no bread?) until I asked them for some. I understand they are students but they are supervised, and with the high prices, we expected better.
We were celebrating my husband's birthday. We love Italy and this was a lovely way to experience Italian food without being there. It was also our first time at the CIA and we will surely be back. The food was delicious and our waiter Lee was very gracious, took great care of us and was a pleasure to speak with. Thank you!
The service was outstanding. The food was okay. My wife's steak was good. However I ordered salmon medium cooked. The first time it was served it was under cooked. The replacement was under cooked also. I was very specific about ordering it medium. I gave up the second time and was so discouraged that I just ordered a Caesar salad. In other words I did not have dinner.
The other problem was with the menu. This is an Italian restaurant, but there was only one or two Italian dishes. The fare was strictly American.
Previously I had heard so much about the CIA and how good it was. From my point of view, except for the service, it was no better than a good NYC restaurant. I understand that students are servers and chefs, but that is n o excuse.
I would like to receive a reply. Otherwise I would have no choice , but to say to people, it is not worth the ride.
Both entrees were too salty with no other discernible herbs/spices
Both wines were extraordinary
Plating for scallop entree was beautiful
Eggplant entree had charred eggplant peel, not edible
Coffee, gelato and service exceptional 🙂
Fabulous food and service. It was just great. The timing was especially good. The food was not rushed nor did we wait long between courses. Thank you!
We had visited the Bocuse Restaurant twice before (love it!) but this was our first time at the Caterina de Medici Restaurant. We had just a wonderful meal. Our party had the octopus and white bean soup (both just delicious) and the pork and sirloin as our main entrees (truly scrumptious). Our service was exemplary. We will be back!
The passed pasta at Caterina de Medici was a wonderful experience. The wait staff was very attentive and our plates were continuously refilled with samples from the array of pasta dishes. The rigatoni with lamb bolognese was my absolute favorite, though the other pasta dishes were all very good, such as the cheese ravioli in a pesto sauce, and asparagus risotto with shrimp. It was well worth the trip.
This dinner was a pre-Easter celebration for four. It started with a family-styled served antipasta and Caesar salad. They re-plated with very large dinner plates, almost platter- sized which amply held the five selections of pastas. There was unlimited servings and we washed it all down with a lovely bottle of Chianti. We all raved about the dessert, a delicious panna cotta. Please, CIA, don't ever discontinue Sat. Pasta night at the Caterina!
My friend and I went here for the first time and we both really liked it. The service was very
attentive and the food was very good and definitely creative. I had the octopus for an appetizer and my friend had the grilled cauliflower. She had the filet mignon for the main course and I had the buckwheat gnocchi. All were excellent. I had a mixed drink which was wonderful. I have ordered this drink in many places and here it was done perfectly. Not so much in other places. For desert I had the raspberry semifreddo which was delicious and my friend had the zeppole which she raved about. Ate setting was very elegant and very comfortable. Great chairs. Cannot wait to go back again!
It’s got to be hard running a student managed restaurant at a prestigious cooking school. Expectations are increased ! Excellent flavor for many of the dishes - a few were “ok” but not As good as expected. Service was friendly but details need attention. Spacious quiet dining room with a high ceiling was a delight.
Well worth the visit. Menu was quite varied, offering a good range of options to choose from. The white bean soup was very flavorful and hearty. The fillet mignon was very tender and cooked to perfection. Wine selection was also quite varied. Prices ranged from moderate to somewhat expensive. Student servers were very knowledgeable & helpful in describing the food, and also very attentive throughout the meal. The restaurant does not allow tipping but adds a 17% surcharge to the meal which goes entirely to the support of the students!
My husband and I decided to visit CIA to celebrate our anniversary. The decor is comfortable, but dated. The service was welcoming and friendly. Most importantly, the food was "just OK," which was surprising. Not awful, but definitely not exceptional either. The main course was ~5 different kinds of pasta, which was a bit of a carbohydrate overload. I thought the meal would include meat, fish or chicken and some vegetables. Some of the items had so much salt I could not eat them. The dessert was excellent.
Wonderful dinner. Terrific service.
We dined at Caterina, 2 weeks in a row
We brought friends celebrating their 40th anniversary
Our visits are always fabulous
Posta Saturdays ROCK!!!
The students were wonderful
You will absolutely have a wonderful dining experience!
We were disappointed in the food. It was a Saturday “pasta” night. The service was passable as was the food. Only one of the five pastas was very good , the rest were just OK. We had very high expectations after reading the reviews but sadly they were not met. We will not be going back.
It was my husband’s 70th birthday and we had driven more than an hour to get there. Food was amazing. Restaurant was beautiful. Service could have been better. We had a young and nervous person waiting on us and we were very empathetic and did our best to put him at ease. Things got a little rough when he knocked over a full glass of red wine that splashed my husband’s clothes and dinner jacket. We were moved to another table and given a laundry contact to send the bill to. That was all standard operations. How about the expensive glass of red wine that ended up on the table. Should’t Someone have offered me a replacement glass of wine? Please think about that. I spent about $500 that night. Surely I deserved better service and solutions from CIA.
Our son graduated from CIA on 3/23, so it was a family celebration. Everything was wonderful. The only negative was the food was not very hot. Other than that, fabulous!
Good choices on menu, good service, excellent meal
The restaurant's location within the CIA campus, overlooking the Hudson river, further enhances the delicious dinning experience. The services provided by the CIA students are excellent, showing their eagerness to practice the skills they learned in the classrooms.
I find this to be more than a dinning experience......
I have been to this restaurant before and I thought it was excellent. However this time around, the service as well as the food were not up to par as before. The waitress for our table was good but the folks that clear the table in between courses were lazy and sloppy - clearly after they cleared the table there were very large, visible crumbs from previous meal. And they didnt even show up at the end of the first course.
More upsetting was the dessert - tiramisu I ordered, I have better home made as well olive garden versions! It looked like it was frozen and thawed with the creme runny and the inside layer still frozen! It was extremely bad I wish I had taken pictures of it. I did not bring it up to the waiter, didnt want to ding some students grade but man for the standard you expect for CIA, it sure has gone down.
We had a giftcard and it was restaurant week. The food was delicious and service was great. The students are doing a great job. We will be back.
We did not enjoy the meal as much as we have in the past. I ordered the salmon which was not cooked all the way through. I really enjoyed the white bean and kale soup and my husband loved the rigatoni. We both loved the tiaramisu. We will try a different restaurant next time.
It was very nice restaurant and food was good!
Had a great birthday lunch for my dad. The food was excellent and perfectly portioned and the staff could not have been nicer or more attentive. Altogether perfect!
This was a lovely, memorable meal and I can't wait to go back with friends. The students are so lovely when we asked them numerous questions about the food and their education. It was outstanding in so many ways. I can't stop telling people how it truly lived up to our expectations!
Caterina de Medici offers many great options for their pasta night dinner and I would highly recommend it. The atmosphere is great and the food is delicious, well prepared and served by very friendly non-intrusive servers.
Cozy dining experience with my Family for my birthday celebration. Ambience was superb, and authentic. Seating was very comfortable and spacious, noise level was minimal, and food and service both spectacular! Thoroughly enjoyed by all!
It was Hudson Valley Restaurant week but unlike every other CIA restaurant , it was not being honored on Saturday. They did call and confirm the day before but it was a birthday already planned and a substitute reservation was not easily accomplished at that point.
I found it petty as the difference in cost was not that great.
It was a prix fixe pasta night.
Bucatini - Butter, Parmigiana, pepper. The pasta was not al dente. The flavor was relatively good but the pasta had seen too much action, whether fresh pasta or dry.
Lamb Bolognese - This was very good, I’m generally not fond of Lamb but this was exceptional.
Ravioli pesto - Surprisingly mediocre. The ravioli was over cooked and not as good as it should have been. I was expecting great ravioli but I’ve purchased and cooked way better ravioli myself. The pesto was just ok as well, it should have been better.
Gnocchi butter sage mushroom - This was really fantastic, tender, well prepared, earthy mushrooms, sage, brown butter.
The Caesar salad was good and nicely dressed and prepared. The antipasto was ok, roasted peppers very good, Burrata is always nice, but the cured meats were just average and for me not worth eating.
Dessert was a honey corn cake with berries, it was pleasant but there’s a limit to the attractiveness of corn cake.
Bread provided during the meal was stale, it appears it was sitting around sliced from a prior day.
Service provided by students was pleasant but needed some work.
All in cost with service charge and beverages was a bit more than $60 per person.
PASTA SATURDAY is FABULOUS!!!
We always love interacting with the students
I know nothing about Italian wines, our waiter was very helpful
The waiters brought around portions of 5 different Pasta dishes
We enjoyed a delightful meal with friends
We try to dine here several times per year (always Great)
We live in Staten Island, just love coming here to eat. The food is always excellent. The service is great. It's a friendly place. The staff is very accomedating. Just wish it was open every Saturday. Especially in the summer.
Great service! The staff was friendly and helpful with the menu and wine suggestions.
Pasta night was the bomb
Amazing service, superb food.
Our waiter was very friendly, helpful, and knowledgable. Quail was excellent. Thanks!
We went for the special pasta night. 5 choices, each one was better than the next. Perhaps the best dining experience of the year!
I found the website a bit confusing as far as what the Saturday Pasta Dinner was...serveral places on site noted hours of operation as closed on Saturday .... service charge policy for Saturday unclear and our server indicated staff paid as independent workers (Saturday Dinner not part of school program) It should be clear on the site that the food service for the evening is outsourced. A big indicator is the huge truck parked on walkway to the otherwise lovely entrance. Ambience starts when you turn onto the property...Transparency and sources are very important aspects of the hospitality industry!
We enjoyed our evening although several dishes were overly salted. We were a party of five and the salad we were served was skimpy and seemed to be the same size as a two top sitting next to us was served. All in all we enjoyed the food.
Service was friendly but quite a few errors(no fresh glassware for different wines...poured a red into white glass with a bit of white still in glass. When comments made to server was told they were encouraged to not change over glassware???? Very hard to believe and at that point felt a bit hustled by server..there seemed to be no guidance/host. I will say the servers were pleasant and having dined at the school a number of times a bit of unpolished service is expected . My most recent experiences dining at the school have been lacking in guidance from the instrutors on the floor not just on this night. As a retired restaurant owner and chef I really laud the efforts your institution provides to the industry and hope a level of excellence is not diminished by growth .
Very Friendly staff. Love being able to see the kitchen and talk with Chef Eagan and Chef K. Love the students!
Excellent food and service. I've been to all the CIA's restaurants, and while they are all good, the
Caterina de Medici is the best.
