Catalan Mediterranean Cuisine Ratings and Reviews
We had a very nice dinner in Catalan’s semi-outdoor patio on a busy Friday evening. I liked my all-seafood black squid ink paella while my wife enjoyed her scallops in a butternut squash sauce. A large serving of olives with garlic made a nice starter along with tasty bread. Patrick provided fine service.
There were 4 of us for dinner on Valentine’s Day. The food was very good but unfortunately our waiter was not. In the 2 hrs we were there he only came by once. At the end when we ordered dessert he didn’t even ask if we wanted coffee with our dessert. When the bill came it was incorrect 3 times. Our feeling was he didn’t care.
This was our first experience at Catalan and we were very pleased. We were the first to arrive, but within 1.5 hours the place was packed. We picked the prix-fixed dinner but enhanced it with roasted octopus. Each of us had the arugula salad with sliced granny smith apples, walnuts and a champagne vinaigrette. My friend had the scallops and I had the black spaghetti with clams. We also shared two plates of excellent bread with pesto sauce. For dessert my friend had apple crisp. Service was uniformly excellent. All staff were welcoming, friendly and informative. We'll definitely go back!
We had eaten here in 2017 and loved it. We went on a recent Friday night and it was too quiet - at least half empty, no ambience and an immediate downer upon arrival. The food was also very disappointing. The salads were fine (I.e., ordinary) but our main course - Ink Squid Paella with seafood which was recommended by our very nice server - was unappetizing in appearance, way too salty and lacking fresh, pleasant flavour. The background music from the jazz/pop guitar player was lovely but otherwise, I'm at a loss to recommend this restaurant.
We had another wonderful dining experience here this week and it is our favorite restaurant in the desert!!! The food is always excellent and the service is great as well. This time I had the steak & my husband had the lamb ragu pasta & both were delicious!! It is definitely the best restaurant in the desert.
Wonderful evening as usual. Service was excellent and staff is very thoughtful. Of course we had paella and octopus. The "Fish Dip" is really excellent but should be given a more exotic name, perhaps Sea Food Terrine du Maison. I really enjoyed the black linguine with clams and shrimp. How do they get that shrimp to explode in your mouth? We especially love the inner court yard for alfresco dinning.
We had the best service and the food was fantastic. I had a party of 10 and the manager was able to put together a set menu for us. I had ordered the sucking pig for us and everyone loved it! The chef came out and spoke with us about the cooking process. Our dinner was such a joy. And the caramel custard for desert was just the perfect way to end or meal. I cannot thank them enough for such great experience!
The live music (if you can call it that) consisted of a very mediocre guitarist playing alongside pre-recorded background music.
The paella which is their signature dish was not good. It consisted of chicken, sausage, calamari rings and a lot of thick overbearing tomatoe sauce.
I do not recommend this restaurant !
Previously went for tapas Tuesday, this time Wednesday dinner. Half price bottles of wine! Paella delicious and not too big. Lamb ragu pasta great and diver scallops great. Server Matthew got us tomato bread upon request. We loved it in Barcelona. Dinner experience brought back happy memories of our summer trip to Spain. What a great find in Rancho Mirage!
My friend and I tried the Hanger Steak, neither of us had had it before and were pleasantly surprised with how good it was. For me the addition of pesto was unnecessary👎🏻, the seasoning and meat itself didn’t require anything else. I know that the chef tries to do his best , but sometimes less is more !
I’ve eaten at Catalan numerous times, have brought guests as well because overall it’s a good place to dine.
I've never had paella before... I know, I know... have I lived under a rock?!! So with nothing to compare it to, it was Delicious! More seafood than rice and enough for two. Wine list was decent but not a lot by the glass. The ambiance was nice. I would definitely go back.
The ambiance of Catalan was delightful, both understated and elegant. The service was initially attentive then a bit aloof. The fried chicken was moist and tasty while the paella was aromatic, while the rice was crunchy and filled with fish ingredients. I did find it a bit oily however.
The management denied my use of the dining discount card I brought as it was a "special event" but redeemed themselves graciously with a pair of complimentary desserts. Very classy and delicious besides.
HUGE disappointment in most every respect. We likened our experience to those so often occuring in a brand new restaurant that hasn’t gotten the kinks worked out. Noisy! OMG! Imagine eating at center court of your high school gym “during the game.”
Parents, if you hate the looks and glares from diners seated around your table irritated by your brats that you are prone to ignore, take them to Catalan where no one will hear them...promise.
Menu: Very limited for what was supposed to represent tastes and dishes from the Mediterranean part of the world. Olives and bread were nice. We had three dishes - nothing special for the too much money.
Live music consisted of a wonderful solo guitar player. At times, he too could not be heard.
Another positive to share: There is plenty of FREE VALET PARKING.
We are foodies who summer in Portland so we welcome having interesting, healthy and delicious ethnic food to the Coachella Valley. Catalan in our opinion is one of the best restaurants in the valley: it has great tapas, delicious paella, and many other options that are an absolute delight. We love their tempranillo wine which we always order when we eat there. The ambiance in there is great, it has warm colors and a pleasant inner courtyard. The efficient, friendly servers make it a delight to dine there. It is so special to have a great option devoted to quality food as opposed to the many restaurants around Palm Springs that often focus on volume rather than quality. I highly recommend eating here. If you want a special occasion-we haven't done this yet-but order a roast suckling pig (for 6 or more, I think you need to order it 72 hours in advance).
We have been to Catalan several times before and always enjoyed it. Therefore, we were excited to go on New Years Eve and try the special menu for that evening. To say we were disappointed would be putting it very, very mildly. The guitar music was so loud that we practically shouted to each other just to be heard. Our waiter also had to shout to take our order. Other tables around us also complained about the noise level. I asked our waiter to have the the music turned down but to no real avail. At previous outings we have ordered the Sangria pitcher which was normally rich, hardy, robust and very flavorful. This time the wine was ice diluted to the point of tastelessness, hardly any citrus slices and no coffee beans. Overall our dinner was tasty, but tepid to lukewarm at best. The top layer of the Crispy Chicken Chicharron was actually cold - not cool, cold - while the bottom layer was barely room temperature. There was no bread to accompany any portion of the the meal, not even with the roasted Bone Marrow. Previous meals have always started with a super selection of bread and olives. My wife ordered the Raw Bar (oysters and shell fish) and no crackers were served. Fortunately our server was able to scrounge up some crackers and for that effort was rewarded with a very good tip . My order of Pan Seared Foie Gras Slider was indeed seared on both the bottom and top of the slice but virtually raw in the middle. Nothing says "yummy" like a cold slice of fat. As of this writing we're not sure if we will return to Catalan. Something has definitely changed and not for the better.
Celebrated Christmas Eve with dinner at Catalan. This was my first visit to this lovely restaurant, but won't be the last. We were seated immediately upon arrival on the lovely patio, and had an amazing waitress who told us all about the different choices while making some personal recommendations which was very helpful since we had not been here before. Service and food were excellent throughout our dining experience, as we enjoyed the house made sangria, the Bibb salad, smoked prime rib, cauliflower puree, and the amazing churros stuffed with chocolate for dessert. Everything was absolutely delicious, and the kitchen and staff moved at a very efficient pace, especially considering it was a holiday. I would recommend this restaurant unconditionally, and look forward to returning to try some of the other offerings on the menu.
