Castaway - San Bernardino Ratings and Reviews
I liked the comfortable dinning in this place nice view and everything but the quality of the food was very poor! I ordered a new York steak meal took over a hour to get the food and once I got the food I had to ask the waiter is this the new York steak?! It was like a regular piece of meat you buy at the super market all fatty around. I've been to other restaurants and ordered the same platter and what a difference in quality just by looking at the steak you can tell it's actually a NEW YORK STEAK. I was very disappointed but I don't like arguing so I just left it like that and ate what I could. So I don't think I will end up going here again and wouldn't recommend it.
View was good even though we weren't seated right at the window. We were only 1 table into the room and the view was beautiful. Food was good but also expensive so we would only come here for special occasions. The hostess wasn't very helpful. We arrived early hoping to have a drink in the bar and wait for a window table and the hostess said all window tables had JUST been seated and it would probably be about 2 1/2 hours before another table was available. So we chose not to wait and were seated in an good viewing location. Only 45 minutes later 3 window tables became available. Plus she didn't mark off that we kept our reservation so Open Table thought we never showed and never cancelled. The waitress was good but very busy. Overall I would recommend Castaways for a special occasion.
This is my hubby's favorite Sunday Brunch spot! The food and service is always excellent. Great variations in choices. The quality is the top end and the view cannot be beat. We have gone in all types of weather and even this last visit it had been raining and was cloudy but still the view of San Bernardino was lovely. The only negative thing is the desperate need to repair all the seating their. Every chair in the dining room around us was ripped up. For a high end restaurant this is a bit tacky. It is time to invest some money in some repairs or upgrades of just the sitting portion pof the chairs. No need to buy all new one. Just reupholstery.
Friday night business meal. Surprisingly was easy to book a table. The service was excellent, food good, but not much above average. I had the small filet and my colleague had the prime rib. Both entries were cooked a bit over the medium ordered. Hey, I enjoyed my meal, the view is nice and it's not overpriced. Would go again and recommend to a friend with qualifications.
We found most of the food lacking in flavor. Some "hot" food was cool or cold. The only "salad" on the salad bar was spinach - no accompanying vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, onion. Many of the chairs were torn and in need of reupholstering.
This place used to be classy and a dressy restaurant. We went dressed up from church and felt overdressed. We feel it was overpriced for the food offered.
The greatest bright spot in this whole adventure was our waiter, Alex. He was delightful and very attentive.
We will not be returning to this restaurant nor will we recommend it to anyone.
The castaway is a gem in a city that's known for the bad. I didn't expect it to be such a beautiful restaurant. I wouldn't go to This restaurant unless you plan to eat outside. It's such a beautiful view and ambience. We were celebrating our anniversary and got the prix fixe meal and an appetizer. All the food was delicious except the salmon was dry. Other than that, it was an amazing night for us. It was also fun to sit by the fire pit and talk after dinner. I'd def go again
Thought we would order from the Fixe menu, big mistake. prime rib was cut very thin and low grade. vegetables were very thin, mash potatoes tasted like paste. onion soup was very good as the salads .All the dinning room chairs need repair. Cracked upholstery area on every chair. We tried to find three for the ladies that needed not have their expensive cloths catch on the cracked upholstery. I have dinning there for 20 years for gatherings, many Sunday brunches, and countless dinners. I have been out of the area for the past year, how quickly things change! Another San Bernardino landmark going downhill...
The views were amazing. You pay more for the experience and views than anything. The food was kind of bland not hot and overly priced. Small portion sizes. I ordered the filet mignon it was bland and dried out. My Fiance ordered the chicken alfredo it was ok. I could make better at home. The waiter was nice but rushed he was handling the bar and waiting on tables at the same time. I would go back for the views but not the food.
We got married there 15 years ago and wanted to go back where it started. Made my reservation online and received confirmation. Arrived on time and no wait on being seated. The problem was with the service. Our waiter was Luis. The problem I had was we had finished our food and drinks and told my husband to start a timer. Luis continued to help 2 other tables ( which included 2 people at each table) and did not come back to our table for over 17 mins. After I finally flagged the Manager down, she gave me that I’m sorry speech and I proceeded to let her know that I tracked his moves and she gave me 10% of our bill. Our company was all we needed, but unfortunately, we will never go back and word of mouth can sink a business. Instead of giving the 10%, make sure you address the issue with your staff cuz if he is working for tips they are going to be some broke people. I admit I did not leave a tip but paid for the wonderful over priced meal. Again, service was very poor.
Magnificent hilltop location with incredible view. Unfortunately that's where the magic ends for this restaurant. The facility itself is run-down and in disrepair. The food was OK, but the absence of other dining patrons in conjunction with the lackluster decor made this a depressing meal. Our server was very good and attentive to our needs. This place needs a major makeover.
I have been going to the Castaway in San Bernardino since 1970 and although the Restaurant has changed hands several times, the service have always been top shelf. The currant management and Chef over the last 10 years has proven themselves to be the cream of the crop. They make ever visit for my wife and me like a visit with loving family.
The Fillet Mignon was poor quality and very chewy. There were flies and bugs on the window at the table. When I left a message for a reservation, my call was never returned.
I have always loved the Fillet and the ambiance of the restaurant, but was disappointed this time.
Service really wasn't great either.
There was no one in the restaurant, so there was no excuse for bad steak or shotty, service.
I had high expectations for this place. I had heard some nice reviews from a couple of my friends but this restaurant was one of the worst places I have ever attended. My husband and I decided to have a small intimate dinner to celebrate our wedding. It was a table of 20 individuals. We waited an hour and a half for our meals and they forgot my husbands dinner plate. Thus, he was the last to eat, it was sad (we still got charged for it). The food was terrible. Most of our guests had burnt pieces of meat. Reservations were made far in advance, yet they failed to prepare to accommodate our guests. We even noticed that other guests arrived after us and left before us. Overall, all 20 of our guests will not be returning to this restaurant; nor will this restaurant be recommended.
I made three calls at different days and times trying to make reservations and all I got was a recording that said no one was available to take calls but to leave your name and number and we will get back to you which they never did. It sounded like the restaurant wasn't even open. Now had they said that you can make reservations on line, (as my friend finally ended up doing) I would not have had to call The Pines for reservations. I would suggest that some attention be paid to torn upholstery and also removing the table against the wall. It was extremely crowded and a bit uncomfortable. There were some problems with getting the food as ordered, but that was rectified. Our server was very attentive and accommodating and we enjoyed having her serve our table. All in all it was a pleasant dining experience.
The food was more than excellent!! The last 2 times we had visited my husbands prime rib was not med well instead of med rare, but this visit it was super perfect! Also the couple we were dining with had never been to Castaways and they can't wait to return.. Everyone's meal was delicious :-)
WE have been dining at Castaway's for years because my husband had done several weddings there and this is how we started visiting on a regular basis. Thanks to our server Beatriz (?) for the excellent and speedy service as well! Kudos -Awesome
