Castaway - Burbank
Perched on the hills of Burbank, Castaway features a seasonally-inspired menu with a steak-forward focus including a meat dry-aging room, charcuterie, vegetable-centric dishes, wine tower and a coveted Chef’s table. The Chef's Table is available Friday and Saturday evenings, features communal table and 6 course tasting menu for $125 pp.
The dining room, patio and bar are open daily. Our Dinner menu is served Monday through Friday at 5pm and served on Saturday and Sunday at 4pm. We also offer an a la carte brunch menu on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 3pm.
*Reservations are highly recommended. We seat based on the first available table. We do not accept reservations specifically for the patio or window seating. We will try and accommodate any special requests, but you may have to wait past your reservation time for your desired table. Walk-ins are welcome for the Bar or Lounge. Thank
Been 10 years Since I last came. But did feel it not as extravagant I wanna say. View is to die for of course. Don’t know maybe it’s just me. Took awhile to get waited on. Maybe that set me off a bit. Was happy to see like 3 or 4 birthday dinners that night.
Service was slow.
You have to wait 45 minutes for seating an I had reservations.
Tables didn’t have the essential things on it like salt & pepper.
The food was good, but honestly I don't know if I would go there again. We had to wait for our table - understandable. However, we had to wait at least 30 minutes for our waiter to come and ask if we wanted drinks or anything. Meanwhile, noticing others who had gotten seated after us already had their water and wine. Then, in the middle of ordering a drink our waitress walked away midsentence and then came back. The waitress didn't know much about the menu, and then almost spilled a plate on my father in law. All in all, eh maybe avoid this place. The service sucked and the food was okay at best.
The view from the restaurant is as lovely as ever and the renovation has added an open view, lounge chairs and fire pits. This is the good news. There is a decent wine list and they have included both vegetarian and vegan options in addition to various cuts of meat. There is a lovely party room called (TGR for "The Green Room") for a party of 30-plus people. I recently had a celebratory dinner there for 10 people and was otherwise disappointed. It feels a bit like a factory. Service is erratic. We had a very nice server tending to our table but she was clearly overextended, having to take drink and food orders, serve drinks and food and to bus the table, as well. Items came out of sequence from the kitchen and varied in terms of quality. We ordered a cheese platter first and it came after all the hot appetizers. The shrimp cocktail came in a weird smoking glass pot with dry ice -- not sure what that was about. The scallop appetizer is excellent. Do not, under any circumstance, order the grilled octopus. It was inedible, tasted off and was grilled to be completely black. A regular green salad comes in an ample portion but was covered with stale sunflower seeds with a few grilled grapes. I had specifically called the day before to find out if they had the wines I wanted and was reassured. There was only one bottle left of a wine I wanted. The "sommelier's" next three suggestions were all priced at least 50% higher. They're trying to be something they are not. They play loud, not very special music. On a Sunday night, it was packed and filled with kids eating french fries and chicken nuggets. I'd made the mistake of scouting the restaurant during the day and didn't know how it looks at night. My error. They removed the cheese platter before we were done, while there was still cheese on it. At the end of the evening, I was hoping to relax by a fire pit and asked if they could bus it...as it was surrounded by others' plates and glasses. They never did.
I will recommended but I asked the waiter to get another table behind because It was my husband burthday he said no problem he will ask the lady in the front she came back and she said yes you can and we are moving to the other table and she said no sorry if u order your food already you can't move. A little rude saying that.. anyways place is good it was the first time with my husband and better customer service will be great... I love my waiter and the ambiance of the place
Food was excellent. Service was very good. Asked to be moved to outside seating and was completed very quickly. Girlfriend and I celebrated one year anniversary and she was very pleased!!
Upon arriving with a reservation, we were told it would be an additional 45 minutes to be seated outside. We waited 10-15 minutes to be seating inside and told that can’t be seated in the booth by the window. It seems like they have separate lists for different sections of the restaurant and only take requests upon consideration. When making a reservation I thought I have access to a table and this was not the case. I suggest having different reservation options that way the guests aren’t said no to ever table they ask for even with a reservation.
Our server was wonderful and kind. He did forget a few requests but after being reminded he quickly brought the items to the table. It was a Saturday night so I understand it was a busy night.
The food was OK. The complimentary bread was delicious but their steak was 4/10.
I'd recommend the Green Room next door - same spectacular views and much better service. We stood in line for 10 minutes to check in to our reservation at Castaway. Food was mediocre and steak was served well done when ordered medium rare. The view and ambience is the only saving grace for this place.
Food and service was bad but views were nice
Reservations for 8 at 7:30, had to wait 45 min before being seated. Showed up 15 min earlier than reservation time not to hear any excuses. Hosts not friendly at all never apologized for late seating! No respect for people’s time!
Incredible views, food & drink offerings, and service combined to make this an occasion to remember. Will definitely be coming back for more!
We love Castaway! Thanks to David for my making my bfs birthday brunch special.
Great! One of my favorites.
Absolutely wonderful and beautiful restaurant with delicious food and even better service. Highly recommend!!!
We have been to this restaurant many times. Castaways is a Burbank icon and a place any visiting friend or family from out of town needs to experience. You can’t beat the atmosphere and view of the city. The food is pricey but tasty. The problem that we’ve had most every time we’ve gone, WITH reservations, is the long wait before being seated. After checking in, we are told a table is ready and we’ll be seated right away. Ten to fifteen minutes later, we are brought to our table. Once we are seated, the wait staff is very good. I hope they can make improvements with their hosting skills and management. This kind of wait should never happen when you have reservations.
Birthday Celebration for friends before concert.
First time here since remodel and we were really wowed by the food! Heirloom tomatoes with burrata cheese was excellent and portion size enough to share. I had the Zabuton steak, best ever. Charred on the outside, medium rare inside, and so flavorful and tender! The brussels sprouts were excellent, as was the bread served with a delicious ricotta and basil topping (we asked for seconds!). All four of us thought the food was some of the best we've had. Two things could have made this a perfect dining experience. We arrived at 5 p.m. with a reservation. It appears this is the earliest seating for dinner. The hostess told us she had the perfect table for us by the window (too hot for outside). With the entire restaurant empty, we were seated next to the bar. It was very noisy throughout dinner with bottles clinking and clattering throughout. Note to self, don't sit next to the bar. The other thing was our waitress could have taken some lessons in dealing effectively with customers. We ordered two glasses of wine, an iced tea and a soda. The wine arrived quickly. 10 minutes latter, we're still waiting for our other beverages. We finally flagged down our waitress about the additional beverages and commented on how quickly the wine had arrived. Instead of apologizing for her slowness, she proceeded to tell us she was busy with other tables. Well, as I looked around, I could see several wait-staff standing around, any one of which could have hustled up a couple of non-alcoholic beverages. No excuse for this.
Delicious flavors. Incredible selection and cuts of beef. Great selection and wine list. Views at sunset are unreal. One of my favorite meals ever.
Everything was great, can’t wait to go there again
We had a wonderful time visiting Castaway for my boyfriend's birthday. The food was delicious, the view is beautiful and the the service was friendly. We would definitely recommend any steak on the menu and the roasted bone marrow was delicious!
It was my husband’s birthday and the food wasn’t good at all. I had told the receptionist in the front that it was my husband’s birthday and she said she would make a note when we ordered desert but nothing was told so I had to remind our waiter about it. The steaks were really dry. And our waiter asked us and expected a $70 dollar tip..
waiter was friendly and quick on service great on sugestions
Worst experience ever! Don’t go there. I wanted to celebrate my birthday there. My reservation was at 9 and me and my family were sitting for 30 minutes and no one came to our table to take our order not even our drink order or bring us water! DONT GO THERE WORST EXPIERENCE EVER HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED
Though the food and the view are good, it's not worth the terrible service. This is the second time I've been there and both times the service was terrible. We were there for 40 minutes before a server even came up to ask to ask us if we wanted anything to drink. During that time we also had no water or appetizers, nothing. It was not that busy, and the server walked past us multiple times. After being there for 30 minutes we went to the front to ask for our server but they still didn't come for another 10 minutes. Once our server came he was sweet, but barely apologetic for the wait. I have no plans of returning--which is very unfortunate because the view is amazing.
Beautiful restaurant, amazing food and great service. The only downside is that I don’t live here and can’t come more often!
We recently had a great experience there. Beautiful after the remodel. Do yourself a favor and ask for a table in Stephanie's section. She was phenomenal: Exceptional service and very knowledgeable about the menu making several outstanding recommendations. The only reason I did not give 5 stars were the desert selections. They were very few and I expected a better selection. Regardless, I highly recommend the place.
Great food, great service. Best sunset and city view ever.
I liked the old menu much more then this new aged menu. My steak was dry salad underdressed and having to ask 3 time for a drink is unacceptable.
Great food ; menu is not user friendly at all
Beautiful view; great service. Portion size is very good a little pricey
Finally, Castaway has a terrific menu to go with the amazing view! The prices are on the high side, but the food is always fantastic. The main emphasis is on their myriad cuts of beef, including American wagyu, but there are entree's for vegetarians and non-beef eaters also. It's well worth the trip up the side of the mountain to watch the sun go down over downtown Burbank, even if all you order are cocktails and appetizers. I've been there several times with family and friends, and I highly recommend it.
Well done all around. Service was excellent as was the food.
We went there on a Sunday around 1pm. The menu they had was the brunch menu. The food was amazing. I got the wagyu steak and it was cooked perfectly the way I asked for. The ambience was nice and our waiter was so friendly and attentive and very approachable. It’s better to make reservation a head of time.
My family always enjoys Castaway. The view is fabulous, the service is always friendly and efficient and the food is delicious. The patio is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy your meal and special drinks. The music playlist is always fun but a bit too loud for conversation.
We came here for my mother’s birthday with high expectations for a restaurant of this caliber. Steaks were not properly cooked or seasoned. The menu was hard to understand and no attempt was made to explain anything. Service was very slow and impersonal. When an expensive drink was ordered, we were asked by 4 different people to confirm we were “sure”, this was highly condescending and discriminating. When the check was brought and a card had been laying there ready to pay it laid there 15 minutes before I myself brought it to the waiter.
The entire experience was atrocious and shameful on a special day for my mother.
I made an online reservation. Showed up on time with my date. They asked us to wait at the bar and a table would be available shortly.
After 25 minutes I asked about our table. They had completely forgot about us and scrambled to get us an ok indoor table after intitialy promising outdoor.
Food and service was good.
We had a fantastic time. We wanted to check out the newly rebuilt Castaways and it is beautiful. We got married here a few years ago and this restaurant is much more beautiful now than before.
Food is pretty good and we love the complimentary bread and butter. Food costs are pretty high though. Service was excellent, but can’t remember the name of the young guy who served us. He was very nice and attentive. I already recommended this place to friends. We might be back just for the drinks and tapas.
Could have been better with service and food quality. Dessert was also disappointing
Let's start with the food. It's very good. From there the rest is a downhill experience. The service at castaway is absolutely terrible. I placed a reservation 9 days in advance for my anniversary, and attempted to call them daily to no success. I was trying to get ahold of someone to secure a more romantic table and ask for any special services they could provide. I left 5 voicemails, no response. Upon arrival the staff was rude, the waiters young and inexperienced, and the environment loud. I never write reviews, but castaway was such a terrible dining experience for a $300 ticket price that I felt compelled. Save your time money and effort. Find another venue.
When we got there we were seated in a reasonable time (we had reservations). but the service was very bad- we were not attended to for a prolonged period (we had previously bought drinks at bar so we were enjoying those) and the waitress that finally did attend to us was very slow in bringing us our orders, never asked us if we would like bread, water , etc...- the other waiters in the area were very attentive to their customers and somehow ours was not. She was not proactively monitoring our table for additional drinks, or new silverware, etc.- our dinner when delivered was incomplete and I had to wait for her to look around our area to get here attention and explained that we were missing some of dishes and her response was that she was told our dinners were delivered ; so she now is dishonest, and pointing fingers at her team- "i am thinking "wow". I would not recommend anyone to go here based on my personal experience. I felt taken advantage of, lied to, and basically given a very negative experience and they don't care.
I am sad that I have to agree with other reviewers about being ignored by the wait staff. My sense is that they are abused and undertipped by the regular clientele and have been burnt one too many times, therefore, apathetic. When we saw our waiter, 10 minutes after seated, took order, then never again came over until our plates were served, eaten, and removed... I had to wave down other staff for simple requests.
Regardless of all of the above: staff were all very nice when I got their attention! Location, decor, view, were all fantastic. Any seat in the house, I’m tellin you, is great. Inside or out. Food was good...
Not great, but good. A fine evening was had.
It nags at me that everything about the restaurant implies fine dining, but the staff training is.... huh?
