CAST at the Viceroy Ratings and Reviews
Went for a birthday dinner and thought the ambiance was great, however it was so quiet, no patrons on a Saturday night. We ate outside near the pool and it was really a beautiful evening weather wise. The food was just so so. There were 8 of us so we ordered several dishes and no on was too excited about their food. Service was good. Can I recommend it? Maybe for happy hour where food and drink are cheap. Otherwise unless it gets a little livelier or they produce better food, I would have to comment that for the money, there are much better choices.
I thought the food was ok. I don't think it's worth going out of your way for. I had the steak and shrimp. I asked for medium rare. The quality of the meat wasn't that great. It came out a little more well done than rare. My shrimp was over cooked. With that said, I don't think it was bad, just not very good. The outside decor is nice and comfortable. It was quiet when we sat down around 8pm. Then the music started late at night around 9:30. It was a bit loud, but luckily we were done eating at that point. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here.
This Easter brunch was $400 for a party of 3. I ordered a Veuve Cliquot champagne drink and they served it in a plastic glass. I asked for at least a wine glass and the waiter took my drink and re-poured it right our table. When we went to get our food, there was only one egg benedict, the bacon tray was empty and the salad was low. Most places replenish heartily and keep their trays full. I took the last cold egg benedict.
The atmosphere was lovely.
Food was great and atmosphere was good. Hosts and wait staff were friendly and attentive after quite a bit of disorganization upon our initial arrival - we had trouble getting a glass of water and for wait staff to be assigned to our table. It took painstakingly long. Once that was out of the way, the service and meal was great other than having to wait periodically for certain items to be replenished in the buffet. Understandable I suppose for an Easter brunch.
I had called and made a reservation for the Easter buffet and an outdoor table and was told to use open table so I did. When we arrived for Easter yesterday I was told we had to sit inside and that we couldn't get the buffet. All of which I was not told on the phone. Very disappointing and the regular menu is like a normal hotel room service menu. Nothing special and my family was dressed up for a nice breakfast. Very disappointing and I would make sure you ask for a manager if you call for reservations. I had to call different times because no one answered the phone originally.
It was a really nice set up for my boyfriend and I . The food was really good , just disappointed they substituted the oysters for cheese and crackers for an allergy. The service was phenomenal. I would definitely recommend this place for special occasion !
The Viceroy is a great, hip setting. The cabanas garden and pool setting is fabulous, cool and inviting. Cast was very disappointing from our waiter who was brisk ( but efficient )
The appetisers ( we ordered four and only the cauliflower was remarkable) were ordinary. Our entrees were fine but not inspiring or flavourful. We choose the chicken on a bed of mushrooms ( lacked imagination and flavour), the bolognese pasta ( dry ). The salmon entree was the most flavourful and moist. The environment was delightful but just drinks next time, there are too many great restaurants in Santa Monica .
The 2 stars for service wasn't because of the quality of waiters, but the quantity. There were only 2 waiters, 1 of which didn't speech English, so it was hard to communicate with him.
Poor Dora did the best she could, it was just unfortunate that she was basically alone serving 3 full cabanas and a full pool area. Bc of this, it took a long time to get drinks served to us and our food. I had to get up several times to see what was going on bc we were waiting so long.
I pushed the reservation time from 1:45p to 1:30pm to ensure we could order from the lunch menu but didn't get a waitress till after 2pm, causing us to miss the lunch menu.
The Viceroy website, open table reservation email AND the staff at the Viceroy said it free valet for lunch/brunch for the first 3 hrs. When we went to leave the valet said it was $7 & that the Viceroy doesn't have their updated rates. Very upsetting to get this info and have to deliver it to the guests at my birthday lunch that they'd have to pay, when id triple checked! Even shows valet the open table email saying the valet's free for 1st 3 hrs!
The hotel is beautiful, smells lovely, & staff is very nice; they just need to get a few things in order.
A group of 4 of us came for Father's Day brunch. Unfortunately it took them 30 minutes to seat, even thigh the restaurant wasn't at full capacity. Once finally seated, the waiter brought us water then left is alone for another 30 minutes until I had to complain to some one for him to come back and take our order or drinks and food. The ambience here is nice if you want outdoor seating and sunshine, but this was the second time I came here when it took much longer than needed for service. Real shame because the place is gorgeous and the food is delicious.
We have been to CAST several times over the last few years. On this visit and the previous visit a few months ago the service was not good; this time it was amazingly poor. Apparently the hotel has given up on attracting outside business to the restaurant so they have understaffed it, resulting in few diners, so they reduced staff again. There was no host, the guy who was also our waiter checked us in. From there every step took forever. I noted to the waiter that the menu had been greatly reduced and he confirmed that. I will say that when it finally came the food tasted great, a shame that such good food (and on the patio a lovely setting, and that rarest thing QUIET!) is poorly served. Not the waiters fault, understaffed even with very few tables occupied!
My sister and I have had LOADs of work events at the Viceroy (dinner / drinks, etc.), and decided to finally try our Cast for brunch, and it worked out great. The food was excellent and came out quickly, coffee cup stayed full, and the server was friendly and cordial. We had a great and will come back again.
Great for a business stop. But I was there for a quiet get away in an elegant setting with unique menu. Staff is friendly and helpful. Pool area is inviting and beautiful. I look forward to visiting again. I did miss a coffee maker and an ice bucket. The location is great for walking to beach or shopping. The bar area is small and intimate and invites conversations and a fun specialty cocktail menu.
The back patio of the Viceroy Hotel is lovely. It seems so to a visitor though it may be par for the course for upscale Hollywood hotel patios. There wasn't a lot of variety from a meat menu which is something I should have checked out before dining here. But I thought, beach...Santa Monica...California.
I wouldn't remark on the the waiter except I observed his behavior which was different and more engaging with the few other tables. He offered no suggestions, didn't try conversation about the menu with me, but did correct a choice I made when I was trying to find a gluten-free menu item. The ingredients in the dish weren't explicit. When I selected it he stood back slightly and said, "I thought you said you were gluten-free" as if I were cheating or insincere. This sat with me, clearly enough to write about it here. Not necessary, sir. Help me, don't scold me. Cast & Viceroy - this doesn't represent you well. In every other way I was welcomed graciously at the front door to the hotel and by the hostess.
I love this place. Service is always very warm and friendly and caring. Beet and burrata salad (lunch only) is one of the best salads in Santa Monica. Daytime and early week it is very quiet, relaxing, a chance to get away from it all. More of a hotspot on the weekends - so something for everyone :)
