The choices range from the familiar to the obscure; from mild to strong (and on to super, duper, crazy, stinky); from fresh to washed to blue. And because not every cheese goes with quince paste, we take pains to pair each cheese with its perfect house-made condiment.
It doesn't stop with cheese, though. Our menu of shareable dishes will satisfy any palate, and with a plethora of wines, cocktails and local beers on our list, your geeking out doesn't need to be limited to the cheese.

The cheese purveyor was lovely & erudite; she ought to own her own restaurant!
The frico potatoes were so delicious & the chef is skilled though the cheese pairings were not up to snuff, probably due to short-timerism.
Owner Brian has a singularly unfriendly mien- we were introduced to him for the 3d time & once again he exhibited his singular compensatory, arms-crossed/ascitic, gum-champing, studied lack of recognition or interest. His Gracelessness will be much more at home back in NYC (I’m from there).
The milieu is as great as any anywhere- especially with all the other fantastic goings-on and will have no trouble appealing to a nicer equally-competent restaurateur! I would consider being an investor.
A shame they are closing. The eclectic food was spot on in quality and preparation. The cheese pairings with accoutrements were transcendant. Fun wine list to try. Cocktails were surprisingly creative and delicious- well curated. The setting was very hip- felt like NYC, not Pgh. Loved the comfortable sitting area and couches, as well as the connection to the book store. Sorry I missed the cheese classes and special events, music and readings.
I'm sorry I discovered it too late. I think Pgh will miss it- we needed this place.
First time there and sorry to see close. The only great place to dine in my neighborhood.
Fabulous Pittsburgh addition that sadly is closing December 23. Best octopus in the city....and among the best prep ever.
Pity it’s closed. I really enjoyed the concept. I hope they may consider reopening in a new location sometime.
My local! A godsend!
Try the handmade in front of you mozzarella! Great wine and cheese place
Unique menu. Food was very flavorful. Server gave good guidance regarding menu choices. Listened to live jazz which was a plus.
Limited menu restaurant with updated changes. Salads are good. Panzanella was excellent in a previous visit. Tonite blue cheese and walnuts was good too. Cheese was mild and tasty. Cheese is their specialty. Next time I will order a cheese plate. Eggplant meatballs I’ve ordered twice and it was delicious. We had chicken dish and a beef dish. This is a unique experience with jazz and a bookstore. Everyone in Pittsburgh should try it. I had fried tater tots, fried pickles. Would not recommend heavy fried foods. Full bar. Street parking limited,
Great food, but a bit pricey, they changed their tipping policy but they did not lower their prices, so overall the prices have gone up, and the portions are the same small size as before.
Great service, great food, a bit pricey :) they should go back to their old tipping policy.
Love this place! Food is great, service impeccable, and the programming is fantastic! Cheese to die for, rock shrimp with spaghettini made with squid ink filling but doesn't weigh you down, and the octopus is always spot on, regardless of preparation. Interesting wines I've never had, and well-balanced cocktails with a creative bent. When there are programs it can get a bit noisy and you feel as though you must pay attention, so it might be wise to find out what's going on any given night before you set your heart on it in case you're not interested in the topic. Having said that, their programming is really interesting and you should give that a try, too!
Amazing selection of cheeses! Very knowledgeable staff that guided us on our cheese selections. Great service, great food, I will return...a lot!
Wonderful restaurant and staff, and the food is good but the choices for food are very limited.
Enjoyed the excellent food, guidance through the extensive cheese list, friendliness of all staff including non-pretentious owner. Overall wonderful dining experience
Loved the food and atmosphere!
Can’t wait to go back!!!! Went with out of town era and they absolutely loved it.
My husband, daughter and I went for dinner the day after Thanksgiving. We shared a couple of appetizers and a cheeseboard. The polpette (eggplant meatballs) were so good we ordered another order for dessert! The place is cute and cozy. Has a nice bar area and a section with comfy chairs and sofas to snuggle up for drinks with friends. The cheese selection was interesting and all were very good. The wine list was also very good. Can't wait to go again.
Our group meets once a month for brunch. We try to select a new place every month this time it was here. The menu is limited, but the food was very good. No desserts or sweets. Wait staff very attentive. Located adjacent to a trendy book store. You can use your receipt for a discount at the store. No parking on site, but you can park on the street FREE on Sundays.
Interesting concept menu. Good for sharing plates. Fun cocktails and nice wine by the glass selection and reasonably priced. Friendly and attentive staff.
Neat place. We dined for the first time here with friends on Saturday night. The atmosphere and energy are great, the food is unique and excellent. Our server was personable and tried hard, but was sownehat unrefined for this type of place. Specifically, he had no idea how open and pour the wine that we brought. I should also mention the cork fee was $30. Although I have mixed feelings, overall I liked it.
Great experience in every way!
There was a documentary presentation while we were eating. I did not know that the venue has this. Made conversation at our table a little difficult but food was fantastic and good service.
We were a group of 6 friends brunching on a Sunday. Knowledgeable staff. Amazing cheese as starter and delicious brunch entrees.
Met friends here for brunch. Generous portions - no room for the tantalizing desserts.
Very nice ambience. Skilled service. Wish that there were more menu options for brunch.
We had our book club here. There was a Fromager on staff who made the perfect cheese board pairings for our brunch. We enjoyed all of our meals. We also enjoyed browsing the book store.
Unique, creative, and delicious. Great for a special occasion or entertaining out of town guests!
This was a girl's night out with old friends, and Casellula was perfect. We loved the atmosphere. The wait staff was outstanding and fun. The food was exquisite! We will definitely go there again.
A breath of fresh air. Interesting items in a cool atmosphere. Loved the plate sharing Their baba was spectacular, and all cheeses quite good.
A nice prosecco surprise for our anniversary!
Excellent little find in the Burgh! Loved the cheese selection and the cocktail menu. The veal ravioli were scrumptious! Would highly recommend.
The best thing about this restaurant is that it is QUIET. It was wonderful to be somewhere where we could actually hear one another. However, it's quite pricey, particularly for the cheese plate ($5.50 for an ounce of cheese and a teensy dollop of accompaniment) and the wines (let's just say it's not a very generous pour, considering that the price for a glass is what you'd pay for a whole bottle). The menu is also fairly limited. I wouldn't NOT recommend this restaurant, but I don't know if I'll return - for the same amount of $ there are many places in the 'burgh with better cuisine and better value.
Casellula is a treasure! Good, reasonably priced wines, wonderful selection of cheeses and charcuterie, and delicious entrees. The pastas are amazing. To top it all off, a beautiful jazz concert! We will be back...
Casellula is one of our favorite restaurants in Pittsburgh. Definitely opt for a cheese plate. To share. We always let the fromagier choose the cheeses which come with unusual and delicious pairings. Pick an evening when City of Asylum is having a reading or jazz concert, and you can make a night of it without leaving your table!
Dinner was really nice. Our server was lovely and very knowledgeable. Definitely going back.
Fabulous waiter, great octopus and loved the cheese, the wine and the dessert!
Very fun vibe and we will definitely come back.
I saw some reviews about the prices on the menu but as of October 15th they reduced their prices and now want you to tip the wait staff which is fine with me.
My husband and I were so happy with this place! Our waiter Micheal was beyond awesome and just an all around cool guy. The cocktails were top notch and the food was beyond our expectations! We absolutely love cheese and the pairings were SPOT on. Very laid back and cozy. We will be back for sure!
Food and service were amazing. This restaurant has a vibe you cannot just create. We will be back!
When I come to hear jazz, hear petty readings, I also eat st Casuella
go in a party of at least 3 so you can get a table that's not in a row at the wall. With 2, 1 gets to sit with her back to the whole restaurant and stage. Many evenings there is a program that you can see/hear from a bit of a distance which can be nice. The acoustics are not bad, but again at the row tables for 2 they're worse, bec. you have conversations going on either side, and the tables are somehow long across and you cannot hear your partner very well
the cheeses were very good. The eggplant "meatballs" were not though highly recommended by waitstaff. They're huge but undistinguished! covered in a plain red sauce and otherwise tasteless. The beets were pretty nice but the vinaigrette could have been better. The white wine I had was really good (I believe Albano?) and they didn't charge me for the rose that I didn't like.
good atmosphere, very nice waitstaff.
Great restaurant with excellent wait staff. Though I’ll miss no tipping system. Their cheese selection with sweet/savory pairing is amazing. They will let you taste your wine before you make a decision. Very nice touch.
