About Casellula Pittsburgh
Our philosophy is simple: to share our passion for hand-made cheeses with as many people as possible. To that end, we will have about 20 cheeses from all over the world on our menu every day.
The choices range from the familiar to the obscure; from mild to strong (and on to super, duper, crazy, stinky); from fresh to washed to blue. And because not every cheese goes with quince paste, we take pains to pair each cheese with its perfect house-made condiment.
It doesn't stop with cheese, though. Our menu of shareable dishes will satisfy any palate, and with a plethora of wines, cocktails and local beers on our list, your geeking out doesn't need to be limited to the cheese.

Casellula Pittsburgh Ratings and Reviews
Great food, but a bit pricey, they changed their tipping policy but they did not lower their prices, so overall the prices have gone up, and the portions are the same small size as before.
Great service, great food, a bit pricey :) they should go back to their old tipping policy.
Love this place! Food is great, service impeccable, and the programming is fantastic! Cheese to die for, rock shrimp with spaghettini made with squid ink filling but doesn't weigh you down, and the octopus is always spot on, regardless of preparation. Interesting wines I've never had, and well-balanced cocktails with a creative bent. When there are programs it can get a bit noisy and you feel as though you must pay attention, so it might be wise to find out what's going on any given night before you set your heart on it in case you're not interested in the topic. Having said that, their programming is really interesting and you should give that a try, too!
My husband, daughter and I went for dinner the day after Thanksgiving. We shared a couple of appetizers and a cheeseboard. The polpette (eggplant meatballs) were so good we ordered another order for dessert! The place is cute and cozy. Has a nice bar area and a section with comfy chairs and sofas to snuggle up for drinks with friends. The cheese selection was interesting and all were very good. The wine list was also very good. Can't wait to go again.
Our group meets once a month for brunch. We try to select a new place every month this time it was here. The menu is limited, but the food was very good. No desserts or sweets. Wait staff very attentive. Located adjacent to a trendy book store. You can use your receipt for a discount at the store. No parking on site, but you can park on the street FREE on Sundays.
Neat place. We dined for the first time here with friends on Saturday night. The atmosphere and energy are great, the food is unique and excellent. Our server was personable and tried hard, but was sownehat unrefined for this type of place. Specifically, he had no idea how open and pour the wine that we brought. I should also mention the cork fee was $30. Although I have mixed feelings, overall I liked it.
The best thing about this restaurant is that it is QUIET. It was wonderful to be somewhere where we could actually hear one another. However, it's quite pricey, particularly for the cheese plate ($5.50 for an ounce of cheese and a teensy dollop of accompaniment) and the wines (let's just say it's not a very generous pour, considering that the price for a glass is what you'd pay for a whole bottle). The menu is also fairly limited. I wouldn't NOT recommend this restaurant, but I don't know if I'll return - for the same amount of $ there are many places in the 'burgh with better cuisine and better value.
Casellula is one of our favorite restaurants in Pittsburgh. Definitely opt for a cheese plate. To share. We always let the fromagier choose the cheeses which come with unusual and delicious pairings. Pick an evening when City of Asylum is having a reading or jazz concert, and you can make a night of it without leaving your table!
Fabulous waiter, great octopus and loved the cheese, the wine and the dessert!
Very fun vibe and we will definitely come back.
I saw some reviews about the prices on the menu but as of October 15th they reduced their prices and now want you to tip the wait staff which is fine with me.
My husband and I were so happy with this place! Our waiter Micheal was beyond awesome and just an all around cool guy. The cocktails were top notch and the food was beyond our expectations! We absolutely love cheese and the pairings were SPOT on. Very laid back and cozy. We will be back for sure!
go in a party of at least 3 so you can get a table that's not in a row at the wall. With 2, 1 gets to sit with her back to the whole restaurant and stage. Many evenings there is a program that you can see/hear from a bit of a distance which can be nice. The acoustics are not bad, but again at the row tables for 2 they're worse, bec. you have conversations going on either side, and the tables are somehow long across and you cannot hear your partner very well
the cheeses were very good. The eggplant "meatballs" were not though highly recommended by waitstaff. They're huge but undistinguished! covered in a plain red sauce and otherwise tasteless. The beets were pretty nice but the vinaigrette could have been better. The white wine I had was really good (I believe Albano?) and they didn't charge me for the rose that I didn't like.
good atmosphere, very nice waitstaff.
Very innovative menu. Loved the atmosphere, fun and lively. The food was small plates...cheeses, small appetizers and entrees. Tip included, a little pricey.
The cheese portions were too small for $6 price. Need to serve bread. Food was very good and I would return.
A very cool restaurant. The menu is small but everything we had was delicious. Cheese pairings were fantastic. Prices were a little high but when we went, this restaurant was a no-tipping restaurant. That has since changed. Will wait to see if prices reflect the change.
Audrey was our waitress and she was knowledgeable, attentive and engaging. She gave a thorough tour of the various cheeses, gave us recommendations that were informed based on our preferences and she helped pair a nice, reasonably priced bottle of wine to accompany our meal. The food itself was presented well, flavorful and paired very nicely. The grilled octopus was by far my favorite dish - tapas style and cooked to perfection. The vibe of the location is very eclectic and pleasing to the senses.
Always love visiting this place! The service was impeccable and our meal was fantastic. We started with cocktails which are always nicely done - definitely try one of their specialty drinks! With our drinks we had a cheese plate, asking the fromager to make selections for us. The choices were delicious and a perfect size to not overindulge before dinner.
For dinner, we shared a crisp bottle of white wine (very tasty and reasonably priced) - the staff will make great recommendations based on your pairings and price point if you like. My husband tried the monkfish (served in a tomato broth) and I had the octopus for my entree(both dishes were amazing). I have had the octopus before but keep coming back because the dish is so delicious! Comes with little potato cubes (not sure how else to describe these) that pair perfectly with the octopus and sauce.
Since I can never resist dessert, we chose to end dinner with cheesecake and Moscato for me and coffee for my husband. I would also recommend the pistachio tart.
As always, the staff made us feel welcome and made our evening feel special.
This was our first night out after having our 7 week old son, and it was one of the best meals we have had in a long time! Cocltails were creative and quite delicious. We had Sue choose the cheeses for our plate, and everything was to die for! The pairings that went with the cheeses were genius! I have never enjoyed cheese so much! We took the staffs recommendation for every course, and I am so glad we did. The service in this "no-tip" environment was second to none. It was all around a very enjoyable and memorable night!
My friends and I had dinner before a city of asylum author reading. It was a great evening, with excellent food and service. We’re going again on 10/24 for dinner and live music. Lots of reasons to dine frequently to try everything on the menu. Nice that’s it not the typical restaurant experience. Much better!
