My mother-in-law and her college friends were very impressed with the service at Casa Nonna. They were brought glasses of champagne in celebration of their reunion after the hostess learned they had chosen Casa Nonna since they had enjoyed it so much a year or two ago. We continue to recommend Casa Nonna to friends who want a classy yet not overcrowded place to relax and enjoy a varied Italian menu perfect for big eaters as well as light eaters.
Cassandra Nona not only has good food, but is one of the very few good restaurants near penn station and the garment center. We had a lovely lunch. I had pasta - authentic and fresh. My friend had crab cakes which came over a chopped vegetable ratatouille type base. Looked delicious and she loved it. Definitely worth checking out.
Very disappointed after reading some of the reviews of this restaurant. Food was nothing special and overpriced for what we were served and the waiter seemed to forget we were there a few times during the course of our meal. The best part was the bread they brought out before our meal. We won't be going back.
Our group had a delightful time at Casa Nonna. Our server made every effort to ensure that we were taken care of, and we followed his recommendations for the right pizza as appetizer with great results! One of our party got a huge slab of Cod, expertly cooked and presented beautifully; one got a perfect skirt-steak, marinated and cooked to perfection; one enjoyed the chicken over salad immensely, and I loved the eggplant-and-lamb sausage gnocchi. The portions are correct-sized, as opposed to huge, the service is great, and the prices are very reasonable for that level of quality in that part of town.
Great find just a quick walk from Penn Station. We received a nice warm greeting upon arriving and were quickly seated. The restaurant was large, yet very comfortable. The wait staff was extremely attentive and the service was excellent. We had cured meats and cheese for an appetizer and the foccia was phenomenal. The fresh pasta bolognese was perfect for our entree. Will certainly be back.
We had dinner here about a year ago when we were in New York and this was the first reservation I made when we came back to visit for Thanksgiving. The food is outstanding and all the servers make sure you have a great time. You will feel very special when you dine here and can’t say enough about their delicious food!
Not our first visit and better than ever! The food is just outstanding. Their focaccia is unique and super delicious. Bruschetta choices, just wonderful. Their ricotta is incredible. Gnocchi, light and the sauce quite tasty.
The waiter, overhearing that it was my wife's birthday, treated us to Proseco, shortbread cookies, chocolate tort and vanilla gelato. Perfect ending to a perfect meal.
We had to wait 20 minutes to be seated when we had a reservation. The back area was closed for a private party. Food was OK but service was uneven. It is hardly a small intimate environment - big loud open spaces with many large tables of diners. The food was very expensive and there were no reasonably priced bottles of wine.
In NYC you can find scores of charming Italian restaurants with better service and reasonable prices.
Great place to gather in midtown, convenient to Penn Station and PATH train if you're meeting folks who are trekking in. The fresh oven-baked bread filled with cheese--given for free after you order--alone is worth the price of admission. Our group of four feasted on bruschetta, margherita pizza, gnocchi, pappardelle al porcini, and chicken parm. Be sure to order a bottle of wine, as they have a worthy selection. Save room for dessert; we enjoyed the pear tart, panna cotta, and pistachio gelato.
We had a 6:15 reservation, were seated by 6:18, placed orders for wine, 4 salads and two pastas, one appetizer, and told waiter we had to be out by 7:30 for a show. Salads and wine came promptly but by 7:15, still no pasta. Waiter kept saying Food would arrive “any minute” but it never did. At 7:30, Manager came over, comped the wine and salads and apologized, saying there was problem in the kitchen. The restaurant was only 1/2 full, so don’t understand what happened. We left hungry, and unhappy. Won’t be going back.
When we arrived I made sure to let the waiter know that we had reservations for a play at 8pm. He said it was not problem and they would make sure we were served in plenty of time. Our service was very slow and I reminded him about our play reservations. He blamed our order being slow on a steak dinner. Meanwhile, patrons who came in after us were being served. That being said, we were served at 7:35 and rushed. The manager came over and gave us a 20% discount on our meal. I would have rather enjoyed the meal! Needless to say we were late for our play.
Outstanding as always, dine there every time we are in NYC. Creative cuisine and excellent service. We had our 14 year old granddaughter with us this time and she really enjoyed it. Make it a point to go there every Veterans Day, on that day the veteran's meal is free, that is greatly appreciated.
It was my first time eating at Casa Nonna and I will definitely return! We celebrated my mom's birthday there and the staff went above and beyond to make her experience special. She received a birthday card upon arrival and an array of desserts with a special birthday treatment. And on top of everything, the food was amazing as well! It was the best restaurant experience and service I've had in a while.
Was disappointed in the size of the portions that were served for the prices that are charged. My husband and I shared a self made 4 course meal. Our cost was over $120.00., no beverages. Started our meal with a beet salad, it was good, not special and a small portion for the amount charged. The squash ravoli was the best part of the meal and fairly priced. The over cooked rack of lamb chops, only 2 double chops was way overpriced. Dessert was ok with their seasonal pana cotta. There are better restaurants in the area, will probably not return.
Started with caesar salad (perfectly dressed, large portion) and meatballs (delicate and flavorful, red sauce was delicious, beautiful presentation). I had the siamese agnolati (very tasty but lukewarm in temperature). My husband had the zuppa di pesce (generous portion, a bit spicy). The waiter was attentive and friendly. Sommelier was very helpful and honest. Tiny bites of apple cake were served with the bill.
Whenever I see octopus on the menu, I order it. The Polipo appetizer of octopus, Umbrian chickpeas, semi dried tomatoes, red onion, roasted red pepper, black olives, with a sherry vinaigrette was mouth watering. My entree was Pansotti de Zucca, butternut squash ravioli, brown butter, sage, walnut pesto and amaretto cookies. A perfectly hand made and cooked seasonal delight.
A SHAME TO HAVE SUCH A NICE LOOKING PLACE IN NYC WITH SUCH TERRIBLE FOOD. PIZZA SAUCE WAS LIKE TOMATO SAUCE OUT OF THE CAN WITH OREGANO IN IT. AND VERY SMALL PIZZA WITH A LARGE PRICE TAG. ALSO SERVICE WAS SLOW. THE DECOR AND SIZE OF RESTAURANT VERY NICE , IF ONLY THEY COULD UP THE FOOD QUALITY IT WOULD BE NICE.
This restaurant is a hidden gem in the garment district. Looks completely nondiscript from the outside so you might walk past without a second thought, but once inside it is a vibrant, well decorated, cheerful, spacious restaurant---a total surprise! The bread they put on the table is almost Like a very thin pizza dough and sometimes stuffed with heavenly ricotta cheese. Absolutely addictive! We have gone with a huge group of 10 and we were easily accommodated at a round table with plenty of room to spare all around us and between our own seats. Such a roomy restaurant! All the food is super! They have a giant wood burning pizza oven and make great use of it. All the pasta is delicious and the octopus appetizer is divine. The restaurant is very lively and the waitstaff is excellent.
I choose this restaurant to celebrate my wife's birthday. My wife wanted to have our 7 year old accompany us for Dinner. I had never eaten at this restaurant before so I was taking a chance when booking the reservation. My reservation was for 5:00 pm but we got there at 4:30 pm both my wife and son were very very hungry. I told the Manager Steve that our reservations was for 5:00 pm and we were early but very hungry. Without hesitation Steve was gracious and said that we were welcome to eat immediately. Steve wished my wife Happy Birthday upon greeting her and gave her a Birthday card while escorting our family to our table. Steve even gave us a great booth/table to sit at that was relaxing and spacious for all of us. Steve sent two complimentary glasses of champagne to our table which made the experience very special. The preparation and presentation of our food was beautiful, and the food was especially delicious. We ordered dessert and the staff went the extra mile to place a candle on top of my wife's dessert and sing Happy Birthday. Steve walked over to our table again wished my wife Happy Birthday and had another surprise in store, he said the dessert was compliments of the restaurant. This restaurant was so generous, courteous, and friendly and truly made you feel welcomed to be there. My wife was so happy with the experience she said it was the best Birthday experience ever. Thanks again to Steve and Staff for such a wonderful dining experience. I would recommend this restaurant to all. Truly a hidden diamond in such a big city.
