Overall, good spot. Service was pretty good and they have an in-depth menu of tequila and mezcal based cocktails. So if you’re a fan of those two types of alcohol, I highly recommend.
We actually go to Oaxaca every year, its one of our favorite places. So when we came upon Casa Mezcal we were so happy to find that it has that genuine Mexican feel, the decor, the ambience and the food was beyond fresh and absolutely delicious. I even made a point of thanking the two women in the kitchen when I walked by.
Please keep it up, delicious. We will be back
Overall it was good. I loved that it’s more spacious now. We were seated right away but then had to get the waitress attention when we wanted to order food. After she brought the drinks it seemed she forgot about us. Also I’m so disappointed that there is no more tlayudes. Why?!?! This was the main reason we had gone. Hope they come back ASAP!
Tlayudas are back! Thank you and we hope to see you again soon!
Great food and service!
The most rudely I’ve ever been treated in a restaurant in my life. The food, the ambiance, the drinks, are all excellent. Unfortunately, be prepared to have to scarf down your meal and take your mezcal as shots. I had a reservation, and one hour into our meal, we ordered a second round of drinks. Before the drinks even came, the waitress told us that while we should enjoy them, we needed to be quick because the next reservation was soon. We got the drinks, and before we could barely even begin them, a man (possibly manager?) rudely tapped on our table and said “we need this table” and walked away. 10 mins later he waitress says that we need to hurry and is rushing to get or payments and that we are stressing out the host. All this within 1.5 hours into our meal and having ordered a second round of drinks. The point of good mezcal is to be sipped and enjoyed, and the beautiful ambiance would suggest that this is a place that allows you to enjoy your experience. They simply need to space out their reservations more. It was extremely uncormtable te fourth time we were approached and we were not able to enjoy our second drinks after having spent a sizeable amount of money. I will not come back simply for fear of being booted from my table at any moment.
Used to love this hidden gem. Now it feels like they’re trying to be a west village restaurant in the east village, albeit unsuccessfully. Reasonably priced authentic Mexican has been replaced with “trying too hard, overpriced limited menu option”. The service was “tortuga” like. Coatcheck requirement upon entry unnecessary. Cocktails and mezcal selection still good though. Super bummed as I used to order takeaway from here even. No más.
I never leave reviews and while while the food, drinks and atmosphere were great at Casa Mezcal, the service needs to be commented upon. I can handle a waiter/waitress getting things wrong, but it's their reaction that determines how you'll rate the service. Our waiter did not only get several things wrong, but gave our table extreme attitude when we commented upon extremely incorrect orders. The food and drink are great here, but be prepared to have to send your drinks or food back several times before you get the right thing, oh and they'll try and charge you extra for their mistakes...
Decent food but slow and inattentive service. This place was very understaffed.
They are lucky they have good food and that this wasn't my first experience with them. They were in the middle of changing their menu so nothing was going right. It took us 30 min to get our first round of margaritas (which came after our appetizers). And that trend continued for a while. We were there for 3+ hours, and most definitely didn't need to be. They have great Queso and margaritas, duck burrito was also amazing, but this experience (which was for my birthday) was definitely the worst service I've had in quite some time.
Informal, friendly and decent affordable food
The food was excellent and the atmosphere great.
Great margaritas and very yummy tacos! Guacamole has just the right kick.
Cool and nice restaurant! The service was really good as well as the food. The atmosphere is great, nice music and service organization. I definitely recommend this place for futures meetings or birthdays!
Came here for a birthday celebration and it was just fantastic... waitress was very good and the food was even better. We didn’t get regular tables, instead we got a huge table with candela and sofas... we all love it!!
Food is delicious. Music was too loud. Seriously I’m young and like NYC nightlife as much as the next person but it sucks screaming while trying to eat tacos.
Poorly run- only one waiter and one bartender. 2 slow people in the kitchen- sat for 45 min and never got our drinks!
Friends in town. Service was absolutely awful and they were rude.
The best! The Appa azteca and their special pasole are exceptional - love the carnitas and mole. Staff is always so sweet and accommodating, warm and friendly, drinks are fantastic - classic margarita is exactly what it should be
Love the feel of authenticity. just a little over priced
Fun! Great food! And cool ambiance!
Absolutely amazing service and overall the food was great. We had a small problem with one of the dishes, but they immediately handled it like pros, including bringing shots over for the whole table to make up for it. I’ll definitely be dining here again.
I booked my table in advance for the busy holiday weekend. The staff was very polite and served us with a smile. From the moment we stepped in until well left. Also they said thanks for showing up on time. I thought that’s was funny. I will be visiting again.
Solid food, great drinks. Good LES spot for a group or date night!
great food, thoughtful and intentional service! would go back in a heartbeat. cocktails were great too.
Great cocktails, food was great. There is also a great little secret speakeasy and club underneath the restaurant which was amazing!
Amazing food , great ambience and friendly staff ! I will definitely go back again. I tried La Ceiba cocktail with the Tasajo Tacos and it was delicious.
This place used to be among the best for go-to foodie brunch. Unfortunately, we have noticed a steady decline over the last year which came to a head on our most recent visit-- unnecessarily antagonistic, rude waiter (right from walking in the door through the whole meal), unacceptably slow service with a completely empty restaurant except for our table, and lukewarm, uninspired food and old coffee. We will not be back and have reached out to our friends to whom we have made the mistake of recommending this restaurant.
Solid brunch menu. Reliably good service and thoughtfully crafted drinks. Our go-to spot for family/friends visiting NYC
Discovered this place by chance recently and brought out of town visitors for a casual evening with good food and ambiance , it was the perfect choice! Very charming interior with high ceiling and friendly service. Highly recommand.
A great place to get together with friends for a few drinks and eat.
Nice but incredibly incredibly noisy
Our waiter could not have been more rude. Not to mention, we heard the other waitstaff speaking and laughing about our group for the entire evening. The only competent person there was, whom I assume to be the GM, but he left 30 minutes into our meal....shame, considering the decor has some real charm
I came here for a friend's birthday. The food and drinks were great. And the service was great as well.
Food was okay. Atmosphere was good. Service was good. I thought the drinks would be the best part, but they were subpar.
Good Mexican food, nice bar.
Great for dates or party's
2 meals didn't come out with the rest because the server didn't put them in. They arrived after everyone else was finished, and there was no effort to make up for it. The server didn't understand why we told her we weren't paying for those meals. Most of the food was mediocre at best, besides the fish tacos which were terrible. Guac and drinks were good but not good enough that I'd ever go back.
The food here is really good, as are the drinks. Service is spotty. I think they are understaffed in general and have noticed this pattern over the last few times I've eaten here. On Saturday night it was the worst service I've experienced there. It seemed there were maybe two wait people (maybe just one?) for the whole place and bus boys backing them up. Bus boys were fine, wait staff not so much. For the price point, which is on the high side - and that it's standard Mexican food - the service needs to improve for me to go back. When I say it's standard fare, I mean it's good but not fancy food. For instance a tlayuda - a wheat tortilla with vegetables and black beans is $28 - that's quite expensive for a pizza of the same size. Granted, it is a big portion to be shared with a few people, but it seems on the high end for a place where you have to work to get the one server's attention (and even on a slow night that same server is not very attentive).
got there at 11pm on a saturday and still able to seat us with a full restaurant. foods is delivered fast. margaritas are good. the queso & pork appetizer was DELICIOUS!
