Usually good place to eat, however at 5:30 pm they were out of some of the dishes which is poor planning on their part. Also, all the tap beers were unavailable due to equipment failure which they were able to get up and going at the end of our meal.

YOU ASKED FOR THIS.
Cold food. Had to send back 3 out of 4 dishes. No discount offered. And it took 15 minutes to fix.
Love this place! Love to take our grown children who love Mexican here. Food is the best Mexican around - totally upscale! Atmosphere and service are great! Been here several times and haven't had a bad experience yet! Give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
Loved it. Atmosphere is great and the fajitas were excellent. My colleague had the ceviche and said it was superb. He also had a cucumber margarita and said it tasted amazing. I’d recommend this restaurant to anyone. Perfect location on the canal too.
Very pleasant experience, good food, good service. Will be back
We love this place and come with our friends from out of town every year for the VA Wine Expo. Love the guacamole and the drinks!
The server and manager were very friendly and efficient. The food is high priced for Mexican fare. The guacamole was bland but the drinks were good.
Meet friends there just for fun. One member of our party was late, she got lost. We had a very enjoyable time. The food was excellent. There were 4 in our party and we each got something different. Everyone was very happy. The service was wonderful as well. We enjoyed our outing very much
I loved the ambiance, lighting, drinks, and fast service.
Good restaurant that does Mexican food a little different. My husband ordered the fajitas and got a lot of food. We also ordered the queso which came with some unique looking chips but was very good. The queso was very creamy and smooth the cheese was creamy. I got the habenero shrimp. You didn't get a lot of shrimp but the pieces were very big so it was enough food. Our server was great very attentive. Would definitely come back again.
i loved this place, it's my favorite place from now on
I want to start off by saying we have been here for dinner, lunch, and brunch many times with no issues. We started off by arriving 10 minutes early for our reservation to find out they were "running behind" and had to wait until someone left. We let this pass since was valentines after all. We were seated at our table and waited and waited for our server. He finally arrived and took our appetizer order which we ordered our beloved mango habanero guac which took a very long time to arrive. We had also ordered drinks which did not arrive until after our guac did. My wife got an orange crush which tasted more like red bull over ice. Usually the drinks are stellar. You could tell things were not going well, the waiter was agitated and seemed overwhelmed. It just was not the all together restaurant we are used to. The food arrived and my steak was good but my wife's fish tacos had the minimum portion of fish possible. Our waiter only checked on us once after our food came out until we were done. You would think on a day like valentines they would be more attentive for drinks, etc, but as mentioned above our waiter was so flustered he dropped a bottle of tequila at a nearby table, then not too long after dropped another glass item which shattered not too far away. Needless to say we were disappointed.
Queso was good; paloma was excellent; food was solid; service was very slow
The food at Casa del Barco has always been great. We ordered a frozen margarita, chorizo queso, chicken fajitas, and chorizo tacos. We expected Valentine's Day to be busy, so we were patient and understanding as far as service goes. It was a little slow, but that was totally fine with us. Well, we got our check. We were charged $22 for two drinks that we didn't order and were accidentally put on our tab. Mistakes happen. But, we had also called a lyft already, and were trying to rush out because we called ahead saying we were late and were told there was another reservation coming for our table an hour after we got there, so we didn't want to get in the way of that. It took awhile to get the issue fixed with our bill, and our card had already been swiped, so the overcharge was pending, and then we missed our car, so we were charged a $5 no show fee on top of that. Given that it was a really busy night, we both understood that it wasn't a big deal, but it was just frustrating that we ended up having to wait for our bill to be fixed and then got charged another $5 for missing our car because of waiting that long. I'm not sure if we will return due to the average service/more pricier food... but I have no complaints about the quality of the food.
great atmosphere and great authentic Mexican food! Super creative cocktail options. always our first choice when we are in Shockoe Bottom
Wonderful! Wasn't anticipating such great atmosphere. Out of town quests loved it. Fun.
Experience at restaurant was pleasant - service was friendly and food came out in a reasonable amount of time. Only thing I would suggest is not requiring a credit card for reservations and to allow reservation to be changed in Open Table app within 12 hours of reservation.
This is a cool place to go if you want to try a different setting for Mexican good. It’s nice by the canal and the design inside is also nice.
Starting with the margaritas. It depends on which one you order. Some are good and some are not. The jalapeño margarita was bland and tasted watered down. It had the hit of spice but not the flavor that normally goes with the margarita. The mango chili margarita was much better and had more flavor and was less watered down. I ordered a small version of that one. I don’t know if that means the larger drinks are watered down or just lacking flavor. We ordered one of the cocktails called a Oaxacan old fashioned. I thought it tasted like a tire but the other person in my party thought it was just liquid smoke.
The appetizers were kind of bland as well. The guacamole had many options and I recommend trying the ones with add ins instead of the plain guacamole. We also tried the queso. You can not go wrong here! The queso was pretty good. Although we ordered it with chorizo it came plain. Just be clear to the wait staff if you wanted the chorizo.
For the food we ordered the special - the oaxacan tostadas and the bbq tamale from the regular menu. The tostadas tasted better when you added some of the table salsa to it. The bbq tamale was kind of bland.
The dessert was the best part. We ordered the Mexzookie and the fried ice cream. Both were amazing and the most flavorful part of our outing.
If you order a lot of food like we did to try a bit of everything just know that they didn’t offer to go bags.
It was a pretty good meal. The queso was one of our favorite things we had, highly recommend.
We went for brunch to Casa, that was my first time going during the day. I recommend going at night as the lights and ambiance is better in the evening but we really enjoyed our meals and our time there on Sunday.
The service was not good. Took us 20 minutes to gat a drink. Then to get a second drink it took longer. We had finished our whole meal and still did not have the drinks. Very dark, too dark for dining. Food was good. Don’t think I will go back.
We had brunch for the first time. Thoroughly enjoyed the food. Our server David made excellent recommendations. Another job well done, you’ll definitely see us back.
I loved the atmosphere of this restaurant. It was perfect for a New Year’s Eve dinner with our teenagers. There was a little mishap with the guacamole - it seems they forgot to put the seasonings in it (lime, salt, etc) so it was just mashed avocado. But they fixed it and brought a full new batch, and it was fresh and very good. The large tortilla chips that you break by hand and dip were inventive. The margaritas were excellent - especially my spicy mango chili version. I enjoyed my pescado tacos although the portions were quite small. My husband got the ceviche and it was too tangy (lime overdose) but the accompanying plantain chips were good.
No Chardonnay available. What’s up with that on New Years Eve?
Food was good but it was incredibly hard to hear my boyfriend talking to me over the music. And it was 530 in the evening not late at night
Love the Queso! The mushroom tacos were incredible!
I was impressed with the food. A very good value. Overall a very good experience. I would have preferred a table for six, instead of a booth. Table lighting should be enhanced for menu reading.
It was a decent meal. The service was excellent for the large table we had.
Superb Sunday brunch fare and service! And a perfect location from where to explore the Canal Walk and traverse the James River on the new uniquely beautiful T. Potterfield pedestrian bridge...and expend the delightfully earned brunch calories!
Booked a reservation at Casa Del Barco for a friends birthday, we had last minute changes with the number of people in our party and they were very accommodating. Our waiter was very prompt and patient to attending such a large group (8 people). We all got margs and got our money's worth! It was a very fun atmosphere and quick walk to other bars & locations downtown.
We love it here and have been several times. The food is consistently excellent. The service has always been great whether it is busy or not.
Food was amazing, service was amazing, great drink selection & ambience! We were celebrating my sister’s birthday and they asked if I wanted to have anything ready on the table for our arrival... I opted for the queso with chorizo and it was on the table and still warm when we arrived. Would definitely come back!
Excellent food and margaritas. Looking forward to visiting again.
Our waitress Chelsi did a great job. She made excellent recommendations. The shrimp tacos, beef tamales and empanadas (shrimp and chicken) were very good. Our thanks to the kitchen for a job well done . Props to the bar for awesome daiquiris and craft beers. This is the second time in a month we came by for a special occasion. The manager, Ben, came by to check on us . He made great suggestions for drinks and food. Probably one of the few times I have seen a manager serving food and drinks to the customers. He took the time to stop and actually engage with the customers.. The staff does an impressive job of taking care of the customers. Looking forward to coming back.
Good food..good restaurant, good service the only problem Margarita’s
Just stumbled on Casa Del Barco on accident last week and have already been back. Slightly reminds me of living in San Antonio, but with a very Richmond and urban/funky take. Food has been outstanding. I definitely will go back. Portions are large, dishes are creative, and a good drink selection.
First timer. I have to say, one the best dining experiences in a long time. The atmosphere was great. Our waiter, David, made excellent suggestions and looked out for us all night. Even the manager came by to talk to me about the local craft beer choices they had. BTW, Triple Crossing Falcon Smash and Stone Xocoveza were darn good. The Carne Asada and Streak Fajitas were fantastic. And whoever thought of putting bacon in the guacamole is a genius. We are definitely coming back again soon.
Another great visit to Casa del Barco. Kathryn, our server, was awesome. She was friendly, attentive and gave us some recommendations for drinks. The pork empanadas are my favorite item on the menu so I always get them. My only "complaint" is that Happy Hour only counts if you are sitting at the bar, so if you choose to sit in the dining room/patio it's full price for your alcoholic beverages. It was a beautiful afternoon/evening so I passed up Happy Hour to enjoy the patio.
