Casa del Barco - Canal Walk

Easy to order with the new guidelines and service was terrific. Food amazing.
Tonight was the first dinner out we had attempted since the pandemic began. I made a reservation — weeks ago — under the category of “request a table in outdoor dining.” When we got to the restaurant, we were told that they only had indoor seating. It was incredibly uncomfortable — people were milling about everywhere, and kept walking right past our table. There was little to no social distancing. We certainly won’t be returning.
Friendly, helpful service; Yummy margaritas and amazing queso. Adherence to social distancing guidelines. Great evening out!
Food was fantastic and they have done a great job streamlining the ordering process!
Nice place, outdoor dining is wonderful since you can hear the water flowing through the canal is very relaxing!
Great food! Great Service! Atmosphere outside on Canal priceless!
Staff super friendly and helpful with contactless ordering during COVID-19! Attention to detail with sanitization and wiping down tables and chairs in between each party being seated!
The food quality was great portion are kinda small and they are pricey but great overall experience!
This was my first dining experience during COVID-19 and it was different, yet organized and comfortable.
I've been to Casa del Barco many times, and have never really had any issues on a normal day aside from wait staff not being as available as I'd need them at times. Food is a 3.5/5 - could be more flavorful. Outside area is very enjoyable on a nice day. Inside scene of the Canal Walk location is cool, feels a little dark/damp though. Good for casual date night or drinks with friends.
Right now (June 2020), the restaurant is adjusting to Phase II of the "Safer at Home" orders for Virginia and have totally electronic ordering via QR code/mobile online ordering. While relatively convenient and (I guess) more sanitary (?), I disliked some aspects of this:
-You must check out for everything you order. This means that if you want drinks now, but are still looking at the food menu, you need to order your drinks and pay your drink tab immediately to have the drinks brought out. You pay a 20% service fee and taxes every time you check out. Though you'd pay the same amount in the end either way, it still feels like you're being "nickeled and dimed" every time you want something brought to the table, which by the way....
-You really don't have a waiter or waitress. I'm a little confused about the necessity of the service fee. I understand it's in lieu of a cash tip to mitigate physical handling of money, but 20% is high when you aren't being waited on, rather simply served. A suggested tip would feel a little more considerate.
-If you want to customize an order, you need to wave down a captain so they can tell the kitchen. My dinner guest would have liked to tip the captain for doing so, but the service fees aren't guaranteed to go to them and you can't adjust the amount of the service fee up or down. And in this case, you might as well have a waiter.
I don't think the "no waiter" aspect of this Phase II adjustment makes a lot of difference in the spread of germs, as captains and servers are still bustling around. Overall good experience and kind staff.
Very professional , clean and the servers were friendly and energetic. Hostess could have been a little friendlier but overall my experience was AWESOME!
I took my boyfriend here for his 21st birthday. The touch less service was super easy and the food was great. Our server brought us drinks and chips whenever they got low. They were so sweet and even made him a special birthday cake shot! He had never been to this location and he was in awe of how beautiful the area was. It was an amazing experience!
fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
Pricey, but excellent food and innovative online/contactless ordering system as it reopens after pandemic shutdown. Beautiful location on the canal.
Great all around. Everything is electronic to deal with the weird regulations.
I love CDB but the new online self service feature with the “pay as you go” ordering makes you pay a service fee and tax every time you put in an order. We only stayed for two drinks because of this. We would have stayed longer if it was normal service because the margs and food are so good!
All ordering is done electronically, so you get your food quickly. The menu is limited and somewhat overpriced.
Amazing dining experience for our 3 year anniversary Brunch! Service with our waiter captain was very amicable, courteous and quick for a busy Sunday. Even through the COVID-19 reopening people were consciousness and respectful and the host and waiter made sure all questions were explained thoroughly. Everything from ordering through the online webpage to receiving food and then just getting up to move on to our next destination for the day was so pleasant and easy! Our food was spectacular! Chicken Adobe Tacos were to die for! Crispy chicken, lite spice, corn and beans seasoned fantastically and that Chipotle aoili was the topping that just blew away the entire dish! Everyone must try!
Order system during Phase 1 worked very well.
My boyfriend and I absolutely love this place! We brought our parents for the first time and they loved the food, drinks, and atmosphere. It is such a good go to for quality food and a great margarita. Sitting on the patio was really great.
New covid compliant ordering system is very difficult. Almost left out of frustration. Margaritas are over priced at $15/house level.
Our overall experience was great. The food and drinks were excellent. The staff was very helpful and courteous. The model they used in response to Covid 19 social distancing needs was well thought out, easy to follow, and efficient. Can only hope other businesses take notice and follow their example. We will definitely be back
Fajitas steak meat was inedible. Very disappointed.
Staff was attentive. Ordering through the phone was easy. Tables were spread out.
In these weird times I understand service is tricky and people are stressed out. But don't act like its an inconvenience we showed up, which is what it felt like. We quickly ate and left.
The food was not very good. Neither of us finished our food.
Great spot for Mexican meal. Hoping they add more items to menu soon.
The order process was ridiculous. You have a server, but have to order everything through a website. Even if the server came to our table to check on us and we requested a soda refill he would make us go back to the website. I placed our order with drinks and meals. The drinks come out and we waited forever for our food. Finally, server comes back and asks if we would like to place a food order. He went to check and food came out about 10 minutes later. It was just by far a very non relaxing experience. Hopefully they are just working through some kinks with all of the new standards, but I’ve been to several restaurants since reopening and not had this sort of experience. Beware if you don’t have a smartphone as well!
Incredible overall! The service was great the food came out fast and tasting great! lots of drink options and very good margaritas!
Horrible experience! Management & service is so poor. So far from mexican cuisine! Ive had many mexican dishes and this is far from anything mexican! The chimmichurri was basically spinach & missing flavor. How about salt! Have they ever heard of salt!
Horrible service. Not going again. The waitress never got our water, forgot to get limes for our beer after we asked, and gave me the wrong food. When I asked if it was right they didn't even look to check
It was super tasty! It was my birthday, and the server was super nice. It would be a great place to go with friends.
Happy belated birthday Corinne! We hop you bring your friends back for happy hour soon. Take care!
The service is fantastic, and the food and cocktails are equally amazing. Happy hour is the perfect time to give Casa del Barco a visit, with drink and food specials, you can't go wrong.
Hi Barb! Thanks for taking the time to review us. See you at happy hour!
Amazing experience
Receptionist and waitstaff were great and attentive. It was very quiet the night we went which was nice. Food and portions were very good. The only drawback is parking, but not a major issue.
Hi Rob, glad to hear you enjoyed a quiet evening with us. Parking can be difficult but our host team is always willing to help over the phone and with validating your parking!
Casa del Barco is good food, a nice atmosphere, and lots of seating. The food is quality and I've never been disappointed.
Thank you for being a returning guest with us at Casa del Barco, Anna. We hope to continue impress you with each visit. Take care!
Good service and food!
Thank you!
We love Casa del Barco! We ordered two of the family style platters for a group of eight. It was plenty of food and it was all delicious. Plus we tried several of the flavored happy hour margaritas. Blood orange was our favorite.
Hi Carrie, so glad we were able to feed your group of 8! See you soon for happy hour.
Was pretty empty but it was a Monday night during VT vs UVA basketball game. Great ambiance and the staff was very attentive. Completely different vibe that the short pump location, more rustic. Highly recommend the Chicken quesadilla, Steak fajita, and Chicken fajita meals. The churros and fried ice cream were pretty amazing too. Very easy to get to and with validated parking it's a canal walk gem!
Thank you for finding the time to review your experience with us, Tom. We're happy to hear you enjoyed the quesadilla, fajita, and desserts!
Food was great, margaritas were delicious !!!
Thanks!
The atmosphere was pretty cool. The restaurant was clean and in a great location. The food was pretty generic and didn't stand out taste wise. The staff was polite but because it's so busy there it's a rushed vibe.
Thank you for your honest review. We're glad you enjoyed the atmosphere but sorry to hear the food didn't stand out. We hope you consider giving us another chance to wow you with food or happy hour drinks.
