We've been 3 months in Playa and dined quite bit around the city and various resorts-- there are quite a few restaurants that everyone gushes about, that the locals are quite proud of and that are considered world class... really, few or none actually are. But I suppose you shouldn't have the same expectations of Playa that you would of New York-- but also, the general dinner tab is 75% lower than a comparable meal in Manhattan, soooo...
As New Yorkers we're pretty spoiled, and have largely been disappointed with food quality down here with the notable exception of nearly every restaurant in Mayakoba. It's a shame because the prices are NY high. Proves the old rule, you get what you pay for? Also Mayakoba is this amazing oasis of calm, civility, luxury, and ease... so we just keep coming back and back again and have been to all of the restaurants.
And of these Casa Amate deserves special mention because the chef is really reaching for something personal and unique. This is the kind of restaurant you find in NY or London, Paris, Buenos Aires, LA... a place that reflects an artist at work. Unfussy, informal, and yet creative and delicious and scoring high on every course. Plus the place, the ambiance, the service-- everything just works. It's a place you want to sit for a long time over an after dinner drink and you're sad to leave.
AND... of all of the fine dining establishments in Mayakoba, Casa Amate is weirdly affordable. I mean, it's HALF the price of Saffron or Agave Azul. I'm not really sure why or even how they keep it so cheap, but the meal we had ought to have cost quite a bit more.
As with anyplace with a creative menu, I'm sure there are "hits and misses," but either the chef is very good or we got very lucky because it was all hits.
It got buggy quickly right after sundown but they moved us inside. The food was absolutely delicious! You also have so many options where to sit since each room is set up a little differently!
I also recommend coming around sunset - the bats fly around in front and it is very cool!
Lovely restaurant and experience!
SERVICIO Y ATENCION EXCELENTE, UN MENU MUY COMPLETO PARA GUSTO DE TODOS LOS PALADARES,
The ambience amazing and service was outstanding. Loved the craft cocktails. Entire meal was one of the best I’ve had for some time!
My girlfriend and I went twice in a week. We tried many other restaurants at other resorts in Mayakoba and we believe this is the best option. The ambience is amazing and so is the food and service.
A really unique dining experience - different rooms to dine in all with great ambiance. Food and wine were amazing.
a pleasant surprise although the food is not as spectacular as I would have imagined. perhaps some friends of mine had described the place a bit better than what it is in reality
Great atmosphere. Food presentation was beautiful the taste was nothing special.
This weekend getaway was the greatest idea, and the meal here was outstanding. Excellent service, great value, and amazing ambiance.
Comida deliciosa, gran concepto y atención impecable!
If you're staying at Andaz Mayakoba, you have to hit this place up at least once! The service was impeccable. All of his recommendations were spot on. The hostess nicely gives you a tour of the restaurant which is built like a house. How creative! We dined in the lovely library which was my favorite room anyways. The burrata was delicious, a great balanced starter. We also had the empanadas. Don't skip those! My husband had the beef dish while I opted for the fish. Both were amazing. The beef was big enough to share if you're on a budget. Overall, excellent experience. We will return if we're ever in the Playa del Carmen area.
We would definitely recommend. Hands down, best meal we had all trip!
Beautiful setting, very mediocre food. Told the server that I did not want any spicy food and was served a dish that had mole sauce all over it and could definitely cause one to literally burn the roof of their mouth.
Menu has no traditional food and staff while pleasant is not attentive or caring about guests' needs. Waiter mocked my lack of desire for spicy foods.
My wife and I recently spent a week at the Andaz Mayakoba and dined at the signature restaurants at the Andaz, Rosewood and Banyon Tree Hotels. In our opinion this is the best restaurant at Mayakoba. We went twice and loved it both times. The ambiance of the restaurant was also our favorite of all the restaurants we visited during our stay. Highly recommended!
Terrific use of local ingredients in a unique setting of a modern Spanish home
There are different rooms in the house in which you can dine, including outside. The service was outstanding, we started with the Empenadas which were fantastic, the Coconut soup was great as well. The main were outstanding and don't miss their desserts. Overall this was the best meal we had in Mayakoba.
Nice spot. We ate on patio. Staff very helpful and friendly. Food was generally good but some is expensive as is wine. Kids meals good quality and reasonable. Not as good as some others close by and overall less value for money. Has good potential if/once resort gets its act together.
