Cartwright’s Modern Cuisine blends the flavors of heritage from across the Great American West, all captured and reflected in a style that creates a truly unique Arizona dining experience.
Our chefs personally forage and fuse ingredients from all over the state, USDA Prime beef and game meats, and the highest quality seafood we can find, and present them in a warm, welcoming atmosphere rich in Arizona lore. Cartwright's Modern Cuisine is more than a restaurant; it's a true Arizona dining experience!
Cartwright's used to be our favorite until they went to their new "modern" menu. Took our friends there while bragging about what a great place it is and we were embarrassed by the poor quality and high prices. Cocktail menu skimpy, Caesar salad tasteless, Alaskan halibut mediocre as judged by three of us. Filet just OK. Pie was good but unlike any normal pie with a few dabs of stuff around the plate. Everything over priced for the quality. We will not return. I emailed my concerns to the restaurant but they never responded.

Our meals were delicious and lovely, unusual menu items that we thoroughly enjoyed. Our server, Chris was attentive and very friendly. We will visit soon.

Wonderful food and an outstanding staff make a great evening

The food was very good but the menu was more limited than it was in the past. It was also more expensive than I remember it being.
Thank you for the feedback. It is much appreciated. We try to keep things fresh by offering seasonal items and serve only the highest quality food such as USDA Certified Prime beef and wild, line-caught, sustainable seafood. Glad to hear you enjoyed your experience and we hope to see you back in the near future. -Cody Heller, Owner
Great meal, Drive no’s and service!

We brought a guest from out of town. It was our third visit and we had a wonderful evening.
So glad you and your guest enjoyed your last visit. We appreciate your patronage and look forward to seeing you again soon. -Cody Heller, Owner
We were greeted and seated in a friendly and professional way and the service continued in a similar fashion. The food was solid overall. The fish was fresh and well-prepared. The biggest concern we have is around value. For a meal of one glass of wine, one appetizer, one entree, one side vegetable, a scoop of ice cream and a cup of coffee, the cost with tip was $96. That is a hefty tab for casual cuisine. Two nights later we had an almost identical meal in terms of content at the Tonto Grill, which used to be connected to Cartwright's, and the tab with tip was $60 per person. A meal of similar content at Keeler's Steakhouse nearby was $65 per person with tip. There is nothing about Cartwright's as currently presented that would justify that big a difference in price. My feeling would be that they are going to have to significantly reduce price if they are going to be competitive. I hope they do so as it is a nice spot and deserves a sustained run.
Christopher, our server from Austria was one of the best servers we've ever had. Excellent knowledge
and service. Brett, the owner and chef also came to the table and we spoke about the food and his establishment. Impeccable attention to detail. If you're visiting or live within driving distance, you will be more than satisfied. A hidden gem...can't say enough. What an amazing experience.
Hello and thank you for the kind words. Your server Chris is one of our best and our Chef is the driving force behind Cartwright's. Thank you for choosing to dine with us and for helping to spread the word with this 5-star review. Regards, Cody Heller, Owner
We had visited Cartwright's some years ago and enjoyed the experience. This visit was a disappointment because of the menu change. My wife had the salmon which she stated she would not order again. I had the bison and venison burger. It was stringy and difficult to chew. The flavor was average. I also ordered a dry rob roy with an olive. The drink was good but I found that it had a cherry in it rather than an olive. The drink was tolerable but not prepared as requested. We are great fans of its sister restaurant, Tonto Bar and Grill, and that is where we will go in the future.
great! Chris was outstanding. Food was terrific. The atmosphere was enjoyable and very Cave Creek.
Thank you so much for the great review. We hope to see you back at Cartwright's soon. -Cody Heller, Owner
Great service and wonderful food. Our party of 10 was very impressed.

We were a group of 7 friends and everyone raved about their dinner....the crab cakes and salmon were out if this world...service was exceptional!!!
Thank you so much for the rave review. It is much appreciated. We look forward to your next visit. -Cody Heller, Owner
Had eaten here before I enjoyed the menu back then I'm not impressed with the selection anymore
Hello and thank you for letting us know your thoughts on the new menu. We care about our guest's concerns and would love to hear of ways we may improve our food and service. Please feel free to give us a call at the restaurant to discuss further. Regards, Cody Heller, Owner
The Service was impeccable!! We started with crab cakes and calamari they were the best we’ve ever had then Caesar salads not our favorite if you’re looking for a traditional Caesar this is not it —the filet was delish as was the trout risotto stir fried mushrooms and the New York —can’t beat a Cartwright’s steak anywhere in Cave Creek!!!
Hello! We appreciate the wonderful review. Sounds as though you enjoyed several of our favorite dishes here at Cartwright's. Thank you for your support. -Cody Heller, Owner
Rub eye was tough - had to exchange for a filet. Everything else was good!
Thank you for your support and review. It is unfortunate that the rib eye you were served was tough but I am happy that we were able to correct the situation during your visit. We hope to see you again very soon. -Cody Heller, Owner
We have dined at Cartwright's many times, through several chefs and menu changes. My husband tends to stick with his "tried and true" favorites, and at Cartwright's that is the Stroganoff dish. It is consistently delicious for him, as are the sushi roll appetizers. I decided to branch out, choosing the Crab Cakes appetizer, which was wonderfully all crab and yummy. The accompanying sauce was delish. For my entree, I chose the Bison, which turned out to be a sirloin cut and possibly the toughest piece of meat I have ever had on a plate. It was well prepared, to my request of medium rare, but I could hardly even cut it with a steak knife. I had Mushroom Risotto as a side, and it was fresh and delicious. Our server was friendly, helpful, and when she asked how our meal was, I did tell her that the steak was too tough to eat. She immediately offered to get me another, or something else, but I chose not to. They were very fair in our billing, even though we did not request any accommodation, and I would definitely recommend this restaurant based on past experiences.
Thank you for your review of your latest dining experience. I'm happy to hear how wonderful all of your other food was but I'd also like to apologize for the extremely tough piece of bison you were served. A steak that tough should have never left the kitchen but thank you for letting us know of the quality. If there is anything we can do please give me a call at the restaurant. I'd love the opportunity to make it right for you and your family. Regards, Cody Heller, Owner
I wouldn't say yes or no. It was okay. Definitely not as good as Mastro's. Everything was just okay. Nothing bad, but nothing great.
Hello and thank you for your input. Our goal is to wow every guest that chooses to dine with us and we obviously didn't reach that goal. I would love to hear more about your recent experience at Cartwright's so please feel free to give me a call at the restaurant to discuss ways we may improve. Sincerely, Cody Heller, Owner
Let me start out with I don’t mind spending ~$100 a person for good food. But at this cost meat was dry and hard to eat for three of the meat dishes we ordered. Noise level loud with unruly drunk customers that staff did nothing about. The waitress kept pushing the THE DESTINATION CHEF’S TASTING plate, that was $125 per person this night that was a sampling half meat/fish plate and she suggested we should add extra sides with this item. She kept pushing we should all get the chef’s tasting plate even when we told her three of us don’t want any fish. Clearly she was pushing the high cost menu items and not listening. So three order meat dish’s and one fish. 1 person ordered the high end game burger and the meat was so hard we could not cut the Hamburger in two and was like leather. 2 ordered the pork shoulder that also seemed like it had been sitting out and cold and dry. The last was the Salmon that was ok but nothing to rave about. Too bad as our home close by and was hoping to find a regular place to take family and friends.

We really enjoyed the great variety and quality of food offered here.
Thank you for dining with us. We have a bit of a unique menu using the highest quality ingredients we can find so thanks for the appreciation. -Cody Heller, Owner
We arrived at the restaurant and were immediately shown to our table. The area where we were seated had only a few other folks in it, so there was no noise. The decor was nice, and our seats were comfortable. The menu was not as extensive as many restaurants' menus are, but it was quite adequate. There was a wide range of choices, including seafood, beef, pork, chicken and game meats. It was an ala carte menu, so we only chose one side to go with our meal and nothing to begin with. The sides we chose were quite large, and one to share would have sufficed. The mushroom risotto we chose was delicious. Our meat was cooked exactly the way we had specified. All in all, a nice dining experience.
Thank you for choosing to dine with us here at Cartwright's. It's always nice to hear that our guest's enjoy what we are trying to do. We appreciate the great review and support. -Cody Heller, Owner
Creative menu, fresh seafood and locally sourced beef and produce - everything was extraordinarily yummy! Very appealing ambience with a touch of Arizona in the decor. Wonderful, attentive service. We highly recommend Cartwright’s!
Thank you so much for the kind words and 5-star review. Our guest's recommendations are the best form of flattery. We look forward to seeing you again. -Cody Heller, Owner
I wish I could remember our servers name but she was Excellent, really enjoyed dining here as it was our second visit !
Hello! We know that you as a diner have thousands of restaurants to choose from so thank you for choosing Cartwright's. Definitely come back to see us again soon. -Cody Heller, Owner
The service was terrible. It took forever for our food. We were very disappointed.
Hello Susan and thank you for letting us know of your latest experience dining with us. I would love an opportunity to hear more about your disappointment and try to figure out a way to make it right for you. Feel free to give me a call at the restaurant to see if there is anything we can do to make it up to you. Sincerely, Cody Heller, Owner
Pretty good experience at Cartwright’s. Drinks were good, food OK, so three stars.
A modern take on a cowboy steakhouse. Highly recommended.
Wish I could say it was all good but it wasn't. Trout was delicious, salad was okay but tasteless, and bread (tortillas were tough). We really miss the old menus.
Steak was outstanding! Service was very slow - mushrooms and salad was just ok! Pricey relative to surrounding establishments!
My meat was dry and The onion soup was way too salty. Very limited menu. Would not return. Used to be much better.
Upscale casual dining with excellently sourced menu items. Perfect for visitors to the Valley or for special occassions. We sampled the chef’s menu and wine pairings. Food was very well done but Arizona wines were sufficient but not at the level of the food. We will definitely visit again.
Had a great experience. Our table of six shared 2 appetizers. 4 people shared 2 entrees and the other 2 ordered their own. After dinner we also ordered 2 desserts. Holy Moly! The desserts were amazing! Service was fabulous. Non obtrusive yet available.
Would return in a heartbeat!
I wanted to spoil my boyfriend for his birthday, and this spot was perfect! We were able to reserve seating at the bar and we couldn't have been doted on more. Food was excellent, bartenders were amazing - could not have asked for a better experience.
Delicious! Portions were a little small, but I would rather have a little bit of delicious than a lot of just okay.
Well known as a great restaurant, our visit was a disappointment. We all ordered steaks and there was nothing special about them in terms of flavor. 2 out of 3 of us had gastro-intestinal upset the following day.
My husband and I both loved Cartwright’s. The Stroganoff, wild mushrooms, steak and venison meatballs were all outstanding. The service was excellent too!
I would recommend Cartwright's to a friend, but I have to admit this was not our best experience at Cartwright's. Of course, service was outstanding as ever. But...as a table of three we ordered the Chef's Tasting Menu, which had been amazing at previous events. There were several small details I didn't think were up to standard, but mostly we just really were disappointed in the sashmi platter. Though beautifully presented on a log slab, the fish itself was warmish, limp, and vaguely fishy. But we trusted Cartwright's and ate it anyway, and no one got sick. It wasn't our most enjoyable experience though However the shrimp ceviche dish was very good and the bison tartare converted one of party who was not certain about "raw buffalo". We'll definitely be back, just would more highly recommend their steak and game dishes.
I've loved eating in the wine room for years. However the staff can't seem to manage a large table in there with smaller ones I had the worst experience ever. The staff did nothing and a woman from another table got up came to our table flipped us off, and members if the large party came over to apologize for the women that were cursing and making the rude gestures. All we did was ask them to please see there are other guests near them and too use lower voices. Clearly no manager was on duty. The staff let all guests down that night. It was horrible experience first time there with new ownership never ever going back. Sad.
We’ve given this restaurant a five star rating because, although the steak came out under cooked, the owner came over and apologized to us and delivered a perfectly cooked steak. That’s the kind of personal service that eliminates any small issues. The food was excellent.
First time. We’ll be back.
