Ok food. Too hung up on paleo. Not focused enough on quality
Service was fantastic and the food was great. I think the only thing negative as it was a little dark inside so it was hard to read the menu.
We went there for my husband’s birthday because he had been craving a steak. We sat down and started looking over the menu, ordered drinks, and had decided what we wanted when the waiter came to take our order. Right before we ordered, the server asked if we had heard what they were out of. We hadn’t, so he told us. They were out of 2/5 large plates, one being the NY strip steak, as well as 1/5 of the small plates. For a restaurant that only has about 15 options between starters, small, and large plates this seemed kind of ridiculous, especially on a Saturday night at 8. We were going to go with the NY strip, so it was unfortunate that they were out. Also, that left the only other steak option the Ribeye for $20 more than the NY strip price. We ended up just getting the small plate Steak Morsels. The food we ended up ordering was good, but nothing mind blowing for the price.
Overall, the service was really good and the server was really pleasant, the drinks were great, but the food and experience were disappointing.
Meat was over-cooked even though we ordered medium. The side dish of baked sweet potato was way over priced for the amount you got. The old fashioned was great though, so I would go back to get a drink but I will not be eating.
The atmosphere and service was fine but the food wasn't very good at all. The smoked duck was so tough my friend had to give up eating it. The other three in our group ordered flank steak and it arrived cold (and tough).
Overall it was a great experience. The ribeye, alas, was over done; it was difficult to cut and difficult to chew. Disappointing for a place that is literally named 'Carnivore' and charges premium prices. It was tasty, nevertheless. The sides, however, were superb!
I will definitely return.
The food was good but not spectacular. Specialty drinks were fun.
The first time we went, we loved Carnivore, about a year ago. Most recently, we were embarrassed to have brought friends there. The portions were different, and quality was much worse. The broccoli plate was literally 4 florets of steamed broccoli with some basic splash of sauce on the bottom. Not tasty at all. Our table as well as the table next to us all found the various steak plates (tips, salad, whole steak) to be extremely chewy, tough, and unpleasant to eat. The shrimp dish was just 3 shrimp (grossly overpriced plate) that tasted like popeyes.
Overall, we were incredibly disappointed. It was very overpriced, the dishes weren't very tasty, and the quality was even unpleasant to eat. The ambiance is wonderful and our server was great, but would never return for the food.
Food was delicious. Service was a joke. Way too expensive for service and food together. Just because we didn’t drink, the server didn’t pay us any attention. (He had 4 people at the bar and our table. No one else was in the restaurant)
The server never cared to ask how our food was after he dropped it off. Nor did he follow up with us at all during our meal. After 15 minutes of waiting after we ate the food (which was delicious) we had to get up to get our check and get his attention.
Overall experience was mediocre at best. Would only go there again if the cost of the restaurant went down. Or the service went up!
In Seattle on business and found this place which stood out from the rest of the foodie places in Ballard. It advertises itself as a Primal Food restaurant and craft cocktail bar (interesting) and sources all its meats from sustainable farms (cool). The theme of the place is like an ultra-modern caveman experience. I had a Sazerac to start which was crafted perfectly (good sign). The staff was very interactive and after talking to the chef I tried the Bison tartare which was amazing. I had the braised short ribs which were done perfectly and the taste of the grass-fed beef was very noticeable and delicious. A good find.
My husband absolutely loved this place! If you're on the keto diet, paleo or just generally trying to eat better but still want to go out, this is an amazing place to go. My husband was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and it's a struggle when going out to eat to have low carb, low sugar meals. The menu here was perfect for his dietary needs AND it was super tasty! This will likely be our new go-to spot. My only wish is if I could buy their paleo bread to-go.
No where did it state that this was a 21 year old and over restaurant on your site. The restaurant said they typically call to verify but that didn't happen either. We had a 20 year old with is so couldn't eat there and had to scramble to find another place to hold a birthday celebration on a busy weekend night. Disappointed!
Possibly. What food was available was good. Half the menu was sold out so there was literally one non fish entree. Service was awful, esp for a 68$ plate.
We heard about this place through a colleague doing paleo / keto... so are we so had rush over as we are keto as well. This place is a very welcomed find! We can eat bread here! Meat is ah-mazing, bone broth, and the bison tartar is a wave of complex flavors. Highly recommend!
We really enjoyed our experience including the food, the service, and the ambiance.
Great food & presentation! One gets hungry just entering the restaurants with all the aromas. We also brought our own wine which the owner recognized and chatted with us on. People and service very friendly and the ambiance is perfectly cozy!
The food we had was great and I love the concept! One complaint is that they only served a special limited brunch menu when we came which was indicated no where on the website.
We had a great first time visit to Carnivore. Food and service (Wallace, thank you) were amazing!
The ambiance is great and it's not loud like every other place in Seattle. We had the roast chicken (got the last one!) with was incredible and we will be back soon. Ask for the table by the window. This is a Seattle gem!
Went with my fiancé for our anniversary and we loved it. Amazing food - can’t say enough about how delicious everything was. I would highly recommend and will definitely eat at again.
They mis-represented their meat sources and served undercooked fish. The rabbit was poorly butchered and the presentation was awful. Also, the cocktails were genuinely bad. Nice service, however.
Pretty good, all the meats needed the essential ingredient of salt to make it great. Excellent service, fantastic martinis....
They ran out of a bunch of items and the food was really average. Way overpriced for what you get. Won't be back.
We had a wonderful time. We sat at the chefs table, Gavin was our chef he was very knowledgeable of the menu and happy to answer any questions we had. He was also a pleasure to visit with and made our visit so fun. The food was amazing!! Amy our server was very attentive. It's a place you need to try!
The appetizers were delicious, but small for the price. The 16oz steak was extremely fatty and only about half of it could be eaten. For $50! I couldn’t believe it. Way overpriced for the quality of the meat.
Carnivore is truly a gem! From the gourmet food to the staff, we are always inspired to go back. The ambience is so romantic and relaxing. The food is superb!
Carnivore is a warm little space in Ballard helmed by Chef Michelle Pegues. Michelle and her staff make Paleo food that non-Paleo people like myself will absolutely love. Heaps of creativity backed up by serious culinary skill are at work here. The prices are moderately high, but you are getting high quality organic food that is locally and responsibly sourced. Awesome cocktails and wine selections, as well. Try this place out, you will not be disappointed.
Loved the Paleo concept. The execution not so much. The sides were very good, but aside from the rabbit which was okay, the other meat was awful. Mostly gristle and overcooked - both the bison and the steak tips. I expected much more for what they were charging. Big, expensive disappointment.
Paleo that doesn't leave you wanting for more. Healthy portions, a small yet adequate menu. The service was very attentive and helpful with questions. The ambiance was on the quiet side (Hooray!) and sparkly, which my wife loves. Don't miss the steak and sweet potatoes!
Especially loved the Escargot and the awesome Green Beans!
We had a wonderful meal and experience at Carnivore. We did the chefs tasting menu and highly recommend it. Chef Michelle was friendly, knowledgeable and had a genuine passion for paleo cooking. We can’t wait to return!
Delicious and authentic. We'll be coming back here regularly. Try the drunken mushroom side dish! The elk meatballs were also great.
My friend and I were there for brunch. She ordered grapefruit juice, but she complained the juice had been kept in the refrigerator too long and it had "fridge smell". It was supposed to be freshly squeezed. She had veggies and bacon and I had veggies and eggs. Her bacon was covered in bacon fat that had cooled down into a film on the bacon. She did not like it and got up to get napkins to scrub the fat off the bacon. I ordered my eggs over-medium and I got eggs over-well done. The potatoes in our veggie mix were hard nand underdone. The veggie plates were greasy. Our plates were $16.00 each. Overall, not worth it. I will not return.
Every time I go to Carnivore, I am impressed. They stay true to delivering on their commitment to sustainable, farm-to-table paleo-inspired creations. Always changing with the seasons, their menu continues to evolve making the dining experience always one of a kind. Blending land and sea, Carnivore is a must check out destination.
Steak overly charred, with no real flavor and too much charcoal taste.
Too expensive for what it is
The food was fantastic. However we had a black out and only tryed the appetizers.
Servers instead of waiting for light to come back only hurried out "drink" order and charged us the services before sending us out the door.
The way they send us out was rude. After 5 min out waking to our car the lights went back on.
if they had waited 5 min and maybe let us enjoy the candle light and offer us unly drink menu we would have stayed and of course left a tip.
So much yum and I could eat the WHOLE menu! No picking and choosing for paleo or gluten free options.
Nice restaurant. Get's busy around 6:30pm. Expensive for what you get. Avocado Tartare is a simple dish, and maybe $5 worth of ingredients. Paying for creativity and labor. Could have something more to make it a better value. Duck Confit (duck over sweet potato fries) was just OK. No duck breast pieces in the dish.
Nice atmosphere. Draft near the kitchen.
Enjoyed the cauliflower risotto and almond gelato!
We love this place. The elk and cauliflower risotto was amazing!
Pretty small space with limited seating. Dark inside, candlelit tables for ambience. For having so many steak options on the menu, it was just okay. We ordered it medium and it was definitely cooked on the rare side of medium rare and the flavor was pretty unremarkable. The sides we got were all fine but nothing to write home about: green beans, cauliflower risotto, and zucchini noodle salad. It was $150 for 2 mains and 3 sides no drinks which seems like a lot for a meal we were overall unimpressed by. It was a good option because half of the group was on the Paleo diet so it was nice for them to have so many options but most likely will not return.
