Carmine's Chicago Ratings and Reviews
Have been coming here for years and this is the first time I had to send a dish back. The "fresh" sea bass was not fresh but had been cooked and frozen then reheated sous vide. It left the fish with a rice consistency and squishy. They did replace the item with a shrimp dish but again....not sure that was "fresh" either as the breading was not as crispy as it should have been. I love this place and we always go there when we are in Chicago which is often. This particular meal, while disappointing, will not stop me from coming there. Just be aware that the fish may not be "fresh". Im not a fish snob but there are some fish that can be frozen and reheated well....some not.
First time using the app. Made reservations for 7 on a busy December Saturday night. Was told they were waiting to clean some tables. We were seated about 10 minutes later. Surprised because I thought we’d be waiting at least a half hour. Carmine’s is smack dab in the middle of the “Viagra triangle”. Food was great as always. Had a great booth up top. Def going to be using this app in the future.
The portions are beyond too much. One caprese and a tomato and onion salad could feed a quarter of the Chicago homeless. The atmosphere is fine if you like to feel like a sardine in a can. Very rushed, very loud casual and not classy.
Food was good ...atmosphere was poor.
I cant remember the last time i felt so dissapointed in a restaurant experience. Had made reservations for my husbands birthday dinner while visiting Chicago. We arrived early to have a drink in the bar and be on time on a busy Friday night. We still had to wait a good bit past our reservation time and finally seated in the direct pathway of waitstaff and bussers...therefore my chair was bumped thru the night. Recommend to remove a few tables and allow patrons to eat without being bumped all night.
Our waiter was nice. But really so busy to really give good attention to tables. Disappeared for long periods, I think he had two dining rooms to cover.
Food was okay. Not very impressed with taste or presentation. Portions are large. Not impressed at all with the pasta side... bland sauce...overcooked boxed noodles.
At end of meal we were brought our ticket, no mention of a happy birthday (that was provided on reservation). Just thought that was unusual, why bother to ask if it's a special occasion and then not even a scoop of ice cream to celebrate?
But it's Carmines, and my 3 star review won't really matter to them. There are many other "great" Italian restaurants to choose from in Chicago... I will check them out rather than this one next time.
Great food. Lively, upbeat atmosphere.
The live music was nice. It is pretty noisy. Talking is a bit of a challenge but it adds to the energetic nature of the place. It was great fun and as far as value goes, you get Great food in a Fun restaurant, for a good deal less than at any other restaurant of the same ilk.
We love Carmine’s. It’s always good and this visit was no exception. The only issue was our table was very small and kind of awkwardly placed near the wait staff’s area. It was very strange because there were lots of tables open at the time we dined so not sure if we were put in the time out table or not but these small tables aren’t set up for the large dishes that Carmine serves.
One of our must visit restaurant for us when we are in Chicago. We have never been seated by the bar area in the past and will not sit there again. Way too noisy. Hard to carry on a conversation with all the noise in that area of the restaurant. It won't keep us from going back we will just ask to be seated upstairs or in the outdoor area
Reservations were made and we first were sat in the side room that isn’t close to be appealing and hostess was kind to move us. Server brought wrong wine to table and opened the bottle and quickly apologized when my husband noted it was a cab and not Chardonnay.
Lasagna and veal parm were wonderful bolognese was not great and wasn’t eaten. No one asked why it wasn’t touched and server didn’t come to check. I understand it was very busy but he seemed to be more concerned with another table.
Not sure if it was timing or untrained staff but it will take a while for us to return.
The service at the bar was great.
The food and our server in the restaurant were both very good.
But we were seated in a room that seemed like it is for outdoor seating in more warmer weather. It was totally not having the same ambiance as the rest of the restaurant and was cold at times because the room was heated with heaters on the ceiling. Felt like less of a customer sitting in that room.
We went to Carmine's for Thanksgiving dinner. The restaurant looks kind of fancy but they have TVs playing regular TV (Big Bang Theory type of stuff) while you eat.
Drinks were fine but nothing to write home about. One of my adult kids ordered a medium rare NY Strip and it had no pink. We sent it back. Next steak came and it was extremely rare. He barely ate any but didn't want to send it back again.
The rest of us had meals that were fine but nothing special. Waitress and her helpers were not attentive and forgot to bring our coffee with dessert. Desserts (mile high chocolate cake and cheesecake) were excellent. Only real highlight of the meal.
Over all -- a disappointment.
I Look forward to Dining at Carmines every visit to Chicago.
I enjoy the outside dining Summer and Winter.
I know the service will be consistent and the food exceptional.
I am sure there are new Italian restaurants in Chicago but I will
not get there as I know exactly what to expect at Carmines.
