Carmello's Of Old Town Manassas Ratings and Reviews
We have been wanting to try Carmellos for quite some time and finally got a chance to over the weekend. The dining room is great. Its nice and quiet with no mind numbing noise that you seem to find in most restaurants these days. Overall it was decent experience but the food and service were a bit disappointing. The wine list is out of date, including selections they no longer carry. It took about 20 minutes took a bottle of wine. Our server was noticeably new and seemed to be absent for long stretches at inconvenient times. The chorizo crab cakes are wonderful.
Have been to the restaurant several times over decades, since it always has interesting food and a nice ambiance and is good for family affairs. My late mother loved it, as do we, but is usually reserved for occasions. This time, there were two large groups near us that made the atmosphere a bit loud. But they were having a great time, and it was not that big a deal to us. The food was fine and we have a good dinner.
This place was recommended by a friend. We went here for a nice dinner during a "weekend away" in Manassas from DC. Great seasonal (fall) menu. I had the pumpkin soup and the paella. The Paella came with nearly a full lobster on top. Lots of other fresh seafood in there as well. A good fill me up and warm me up dinner on a cool night. For dessert, we split the pistachio ice cream inside a small pumpkin. Excellent presentation and yummy way to end the meal.
We had not been to Carmello's in a few years and found it greatly improved from our last visit. I was served a delicious martini, which is not as easy as it may seem! The waiter was attentive yet not intrusive. The food was served in a timely manner and we both enjoyed our meal. My husband started his meal with the pumpkin soup (delicious) and I had the polpo (octopus) salad (very good). The ravioli was very unusual and quite tasty and I had the short rib bolognese. There was enough of the bolognese to feed my young adult daughter when I got home. I would recommend Carmello's for those seeking a quiet spot to talk, tablecloths and reasonably price NICE dinner.
We have been going to Carmello's for years and have never been disappointed. This is a classy operation and very clean. I had duck with fresh fruit and carrots, my daughter had the fettuccine with seafood, my husband had veal Oscar served with crab meat and all of the dishes were delicious and artfully arranged. We started with a delightful house wine and braised Caesar salad and finished with apple pie, creme brulee, and pecan pie. The service was attentive. The atmosphere was so quiet, relaxing, and peaceful we could actually hear each other's conversation. The cost was reasonable; just over $100 for the three of us which is competitive with other establishments. We always think of Carmello's for very special occasions.
Had a wonderful meal! They recognized that we had been in the week before and brought us a complimentary glass of wine. The meal was nicely paced and the server was right on top of things even though it was only her third day on the job. Chef Wilmer came to the table and was perfectly charming. We live in Burke ant have no problem making the 40-45 minute drive for this dinner. All excellent options.
The food was very good, the service was very inexperienced. The young man who was waiting on our table did not write down our order and tried to rely on his memory- always a dubious practice. I eat out for work a lot and even at very high end restaurants the waiters usually make notes. And his memory wasn't up to the task, which meant that we had to remind him, twice, that my husband had ordered a cocktail, which then arrived 10 minutes after the wine that my mother-in-law and I were drinking, and then the waiter forgot to put in an order for/ bring us the salads that we had ordered. When the mains arrived, after a very long wait following the appetizer, my husband observed, "I guess we're not getting our salads then"and the waiter responded "What salads?, oh, right, you wanted a Carmellos salad and the lady . . . " at which point, mains in front of us, we told him not to bother. We think he may have been somewhat new in his job, and we are not unsympathetic, because he was trying, but it was disappointing, as it was a special meal, and it was not reflective of my prior experience at Carmellos several months ago for a business dinner, which was very good. The atmosphere and food is of a "really nice dinner out" restaurant, but in this case at least the service was not on par and the servers needed a lot more coaching. I don't think we'll be back.
A very solid 4 stars, not 5 only because I am evaluating Carmello's as a fine dining restaurant. The service is excellent, very nice ambience. The food is very good, but fell short of outstanding. For example, I had short ribs on pappardelle. The meat was super tender and delicious, but the pasta was overdone. The roasted beet appetizer was very good, but could have used some seasoning. I am being picky here, the food tasted very good! The friends I was with all enjoyed their food as well.
The menu is varied and you can get some selections you wont find often. They also vary the menu with the seasons which is very nice.
We are definitely going back. Certainly one of the best restaurants in Manassas.
We loved Carmelo's so much we went two nights in a row!
Party of 6 and then party of 7!
Beautifully presented, delicious Portuguese/Italian delights.
Ambiance very pleasing and you could actually have a group conversation in a full dining room.
We were in Manassas for a family wedding.
If we travel here from SF again, we will visit Carmelo's with pleasure!
We have been to Carmello's before and had a great experience so we were expecting more of the same. Our expectations were not met.
First some good things: The bartender at their attached sister bar was great. He was attentive, friendly, suggestive and made a great Dirty (Filthy) Martini. The bar area was clean, comfortable and in the end, the best 60 minutes of our 3.5 hour experience.
The food did not disappoint. Two of us had the veal and both agreed that it was perfectly prepared, very tender and flavorful. The salmon and filet Mignon ordered by the others in our party were also well received. Even the desserts (Donuts, Fruit) and appetizers (Caprese, Tuna) had us all wanting more.
The bad things: Our waiter was friendly but not very attentive. I had to ask what the dinner specials were and he was not very clear on the description. We ordered appetizers and he said the bread was in the oven and we would get it in a minute. We asked two more times over 45 minutes and finally got bread. The drink orders were forgotten, even with multiple reminders. The salmon entree did not come out with the rest of our entrees and we were told by the waiter it was his fault and it would be right out. Sooo we waited to eat the entrees that were out but after 10 minutes we started to eat the now cool entrees. It took forever to get desserts and coffee.
All in all it took 2.5 hours for dinner and it could easily have been 1.5 with a fine dining pace.
We will go back for the food but will be wary of our waiter.
Absolutely an amazing place to dine. Simply wonderful meals and wine selections, gracious owner and very professional staff. Atmosphere is formal but all are welcome. Before or after your meal, enjoy the street musicians and/or a drink outside at their other resturaunt. Must try.
The special just that day was surf and turf - filet mignon plus a crab cake, with fresh asparagus and scalloped potatoes. Not only was this the best dinner I have ever had at Carmello's, it just may have been the best dinner I have ever been served in any restaurant! That meal should be put on Carmello's menu forever more! Our waiter was great; and the wine special that the waiter recommended was superb. I can do nothing but rave about the dining experience in every way from start to finish!!!
My only few comments were that I thought the Fathers Day Brunch was overpriced for the kids. For the adults, $30 seems reasonable for the selection, but my 13 year old could never eat $30 worth of food. I feel like the kids under 16 could have a price point of around $15.95. The other thing was that the buffet was actually in the adjoining restaurant that they also own so we practically had to walk through the kitchen to get to it. My hot food was cold by the time I got back to my seat. Not the best set up, but everything was tasty and we were full and happy when we left!
It was a lovely meal and the staff bent over backwards for us. We enjoyed talking with the owner who walked around checking on her guests. It's got lovely nice decor and is a wonderful ambiance for a special occasion. The wine that was recommended to us was very nice - a Vinho Tinto. It was a memorable dinner and we will definitely return!
We absolutely love coming to Carmelo's! The menu changes with the seasons so there is always something new and different to try. The food is creative and has unique menu items you don't find everywhere. The service is fantastic and so is the atmosphere. We are never disappointed at Carmelo's!
