Carlos & Pepe’s – Montreal Ratings and Reviews
The food was not accurate with the menu description, we ordered Pozole and got "tortilla soup" We asked the server about it and his explanation was "You are not in Mexico, why try our best" which to me it was more like you eat what we serve you and you don't get to complain about it! Awful
This was NOT Tex Mex. The salsa was so sweet it was not edible. I got the cheese nachos with extra jalapenos and there was so little cheese, it was basically just naked chips. I got a total of 4 sliced jalapenos and had to again ask for more. I guess I am too used to Oklahoma Tex Mex where there is a Mexican restaurant every few blocks and they offer tons of different great salsas. I have had mango salsa so I am used to sweet salsa as well, but this was just like they had taken a can of crushed tomatoes and added tons of sugar with no other spices and placed it in a bowl. Very disappointing.
Low scale Mex-style choices; daily specials & typical cocktails/beers are simple choices. Crowd liked to sit outside under umbrellas 1 block off busy Ste. Catherine. The hostess acknowledged it was a big wedding anniversary, yet the staff/bar/ kitchen did nothing. Sad
I am not easily disappointed but unfortunately this experience did it ! We ordered nachos and they were freezing cold in the middle as if they had come from the fridge - we requested they be reheated and when brought back were soggy ! Salsa tasted like ketchup - took 40 mins to get our bill after we asked for it - server was friendly but extremely slow and we smelt marijuana coming from the back kitchen . Sadly disappointed and wish we had tried escondite instead .
We went to Carlos and Pepe's for dinner (5 of us) We got there later in the night (about 10:30pm). There are two levels. The top floor is where the party is. Music is loud so it's not good for quiet conversations, that might be better on the first floor (closes by 10pm)
Food was delicious! Service was excellent.
Music is loud but it gets less annoying as you start drinking.
I would definitely check it out when in Montreal.
Parking is difficult to find and we spent about 30 min looking for it. We eventually found something but had to walk for about 15 min to get to the restaurant. I recommend using Uber when you're in Montreal.
I had higher expectations for the food. It's not hard to make a great taco. Avocados weren't even ripe. There were zero beans in the burrito wrap vegeterien. I think this place is maybe more of a bar than a restaurant. The food was quite bad. The margarita was extremely sweet. Not a fan.
I liked the atmosphere and the music and the decoration. The drinks were good and with a reasonable price compare to the other Mexican restaurants. The food was good. On the other hand, the service was terrible, we got our food very late and they forgot the order of one person in our group and when we all finish our foods they brought him his food and they didn't even made it up for him by giving him a free drink or or a lower price. In addition, we reserved a table at 8 and we got our table at 8:20! So much waiting.
The food is ok, not really Mexican, more like Tex-Méx. We order enchiladas (and the waitress told us that Mole enchiladas are the typical in Mexico, which isn't), but the ones that we order with a red salsa it was ok, and fajitas, that aren't very good at all.
The service wasn't the best, I hope that next time the waitress will be more friendly or at least that she is interested in the customers.
We appreciated the friendly service and festive atmosphere however the food was not good and the drinks were lacking. Margarita was watery and flavorless. Steak tacos were disappointing, very little steak, lots of jalapenos and poor quality cheese (Not Mexican).
I hadn't been to Carlos and Pepe's in a while and was pleasantly surprised to find a revamped menu and decor. Cocktails are much better than before, and the food was very good. My only disappointment was that they changed their Sangria recipe, and what used to be my favourite is now not very good.
