Cardinale Ratings and Reviews
I decided to bring a friend from out of town to Cardinale for supper because of the reviews. I honestly think they must have been written by friends and family of the owners and management. The service was phenomenal and we enjoyed a fabulous bottle of wine advised by a helpful Sommelier. The food was good, but nothing special. However, the menu is sparse, with only two main entrées to choose from - snapper (it said halibut on the menu but was actually snapper) and veal. The prices are incredibly high, the atmosphere is very casual and they play their music quite loud. Given the limited menu, lack of ambience and high prices I would not recommend this restaurant.
Service was excellent and so was the food. We shared the salt baked prawns as and appetizer and they were stellar. We each had a pasta and both were very good and worth the price. The cocktails are also excellent. The by the glass wine is a little over priced though so I would go with a cocktail.
Loved our experience! The food and cocktails were great but the service even better. With so many great restaurants in the city now, you have to work hard and be on top of your game, and you could tell that they were. Our server and the manager were attentive and did what they could to ensure we left satisfied.
A quaint spot tucked between the Casino and Stampede park. Parking is available across the street. One guest's seafood was overdone on her pasta and the pasta portions are quite small (half and full sizes) but generally quite tasty. The lunch sandwich with soup or salad was good.
Not the best value for your $$ but i would try it again.
Great experience from the moment we walked in the door! Hostess was welcoming, server was patient as it took us a while to decide what to have since it all looked so good. We had fun chatting with the manager and he made sure we were well looked after, and our water glasses never went empty! Definitely coming back to try different dishes, and bringing more friends!
Overall everything was great. The food was fantastic, the service was friendly and knowledgeable, and the décor is well on it's way to becoming an extremely cozy spot (could use some warm artwork and possible some more greenery).
Music was fine, but I do wish it was a little louder so that the tables next to us couldn't hear our conversation. It was quite easy to eavesdrop without intending to, and I think most people would prefer to be able to speak without whispering and not be overheard.
Looking forward to a full plate of the pappardelle soon!
This was our first visit since the change in name/ownership (?). We found the menu to be quite limited. The focaccia bread was overly crusty when it arrived at our table - would have been nicer if it were warmer and/or softer. The pasta dishes we all ordered were ok. The service was great - friendly and prompt, ensuring we got to the hockey game in plenty of time. Not entirely sure we'll keep this as our pre-game & pre-concert go-to place, but will probably give it another try.......
Big fans of the folks behind Cardinale and Hayden Block, they have taken my two favorite food groups (yes BBQ and italian are food groups, you are reading your Canadian food guide wrong) and executed them beautifully. Have been excited to try this place since it opened and were not disappointed. The Mezza Maniche was particularly delicious, and the cocktails and Prosseco were perfect complements to the meal. (Molotov Cocktail in particular if you can't decide between beer and whisky but want the best of both) Its a little tight and noisy if what you are looking for is old-fashioned Italian sit down, but we personally really liked the setting and the energy and found it reminded us of the local restaurants we enjoyed in Rome a few years ago. And its a fitting use of a great Calgary heritage space. Can't wait to get back.
Our server was knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly. Nice, warm ambiance although it got very quiet towards the end of our dinner as it cleared right out. We had the Caesar salad and prawns to start which were fantastic; and split two pastas (which are half off after 9!) which were also great. Presentation was excellent. It's a quaint updated Italian option downtown - definitely worth a try.
The service was very disappointing. We asked for olive oil and balsamic vinegar with our ordered bread and the staff told us they don’t do that in Italy and it’s a pet peeve of the kitchen. We then ordered our meals and the pasta was so salty it took away from the flavor. We were both so turned off by this experience with the owner and waitress that we will not be back.
Great service and very interesting menu . I have a bias in favour of places with shorter menus and such is the case. We had the gamberi appetizer and the flavours and prep were original and good. The mains we had were pasta and both were very original and exceptional The wine list has excellent offerings at every price point
Love the new interior, we used to go to La Vita e Bella all the time and loved their food. I tried the pappardelle, which I loved the version the old restaurant used to have, however I can't say I was a fan of the burnt flavour of the sauce and yes I know the menu said burnt chicken livers so it should be expected but it was a bit overpowering to the rest of the dish and left a bad after taste in my mouth. I will still go back to try something else as I do love the space and the pasta itself is made so nicely. My boss loved the dish he ordered so I still think its worth going back, and I would be curious to try out the sandwiches and such they have, as I do like the more diverse menu.
