Good although asked for poached eggs cooked through they came runny and were sent back. That disrupted the experience.
The service and food was outstanding. With views of Easton beach, this is a real gem for a special occasion
Service and food was outstanding. A place for a special celebration with an elegant dining experience. Three course was more than adequate for us. Fine dining with great views and ambiance. Highly recommended.
Chef Matt was very personable and explained how to prepare lamb. The wine steward was helpful and generous. The specialty event was a great experience, just an intimate group of 6. We will definitely participate again.
Cara was very nice - everything is well done, but it is simply nothing special. I don't mean that in a negative way, it was an enjoyable meal, but one that you could have had in many, many restaurants. The pre-fixed menu, of course, limits severely your choices. For example, the only appetizer that did contain some form of fish or shellfish was a very ordinary salad. The salad was fine, some Romaine lettuce, goat cheese and (allegedly) a vinaigrette dressing - but just nothing special at all. It is a nice place, pretty views, food is OK - but this is not haute cuisine.
Dinner was exceptional. The Forage prix fixe was vegetable forward and perfect.
The ambiance is marvelous. Nice quiet atmosphere and attentive waitstaff. Wine steward and waiter knowledgeable and friendly But surprisingly, the food was only fair. The ambiance, the setting still made for a lovely evening.
This was my second meal at Cara. I was spending time in Newport to simply enjoy Newport as well as celebrate my birthday. I had told Cara that I was celebrating my birthday so I was curious to see what would happen. Not only did every single server wish me Happy Birthday, but I also had a lovely Happy Birthday sign made in chocolate added to my dessert. It was a fantastic meal - just as delicious as my first time there. It was a little more quiet this time since it was the off season, but there was still a lot of people in the dining area. I was seated in one of the "prime" seats in the quiet area of the dining room where I could watch the ocean through the glass windows. It was also restaurant week so I did get to enjoy some specialty items that might not otherwise have been on the typical menu. The service was fantastic as well - I never felt rushed or ignored. I'll definitely be coming back!
An evening at Cara is an unforgettable gastronomic event. The tasting we had was flawless, from the service to every delightful morsel that was put before us. This is a very special place, perfect for celebrating special occasions. Or just the fact that it's a Wednesday night and the sun is out.
This lovely ocean view restaurant at the Hotel Chanler offers fine dining and great service. My crab appetizer was delicious and my filet mignon was high quality in a wonderful bearnaise sauce. My husband's skate wings were an upscale fish and chips and his small game bird entree was very good. A great choice for a different kind of food and special occasions.
Excellent all around! Service, ambiance, view, and of course the food and wine pairings.
Some of the most amazing food I’ve ever had. Great wines available. Service is second to none!! A true fine dining experience. Cara has it figured out!! Phenomenal in every way.
Really worth trying
An absolutely fantastic experience. Cara is fine dining without the stuffiness. Passion is evident from the kitchen to the waitstaff to the amazing flavors. It’s really just about amazing food. Tour the kitchen if you get a chance, the enormous custom stove is one of only a few in the country. Cole was a perfect server and put us at ease and comfort throughout the night. Service was attentive but not intrusive: The scallops were perfect, and the oxtail stew under it was rich and complex. The lobster and gnocchi was the best I’d ever had. Wine list was stellar and. The desert was fantastic. A five star experience for our valentines dinner. Bravo Cara!
extremely tentative staff, elegant ambiance and food presentation, along with the ultimate fine dining experience!
Best restaurant in Newport. Food was unique, special and fantastically prepared and delivered. There are so many good restaurants in Newport, it's hard to find something that truly stands out. Cara does. If you are looking for a dining experience, not just dinner, this is the place.
Cars is a spectacular experience all around! 10/10! The service, quality of food & location in the infamous Chanler is second to none!
Very elegant dining experience that is good for a special date or anniversary. Portion sizes are perfect for their tasting menus, not too big and not so small where if you share with your date you only get one bite. Dining room is bright and it complements the food presentation where as the bar is opposite (dim and cozy) and is perfect for an after dinner drink by the fire.
Absolutely amazing meal. We did the plunge with the wine pairing and I was superb. Definitely will go back soon.
Never a disappointment! Cole is the best waiter! We enjoy this special place immensely...incredible food, presentation and service. Five stars!
great service great ambience great food
My wife and I recently attended Cara for a Christmas dinner. We were able to try two unique tasting menus and we absolutely loved them both. Our service was excellent and the ambiance was superb. We would highly recommend Cara and certainly come back again in the future.
We dined on Christmas Day and everything was extra special. The staff, the cuisine, the atmosphere. Exceptional.
So glad we chose this place for Christmas. Service and food deserved some Michelin stars.
I've lived in Newport for 8 years, but this is the first time I've eaten here since it changed over from the Spiced Pear. The meal and service was exquisite. Lovely evening. Waygu Cheek was excellent!
Quite possibly the best complete meal experience I’ve ever had!
Wife and I have been coming here, formerly when it was the spiced pear, for the past 4 years. We were married in Newport and keep coming back to the chandler for our anniversary to rekindle our memories.
The change to Cara has brought improvements to the food experience. Every component of each dish is splendidly crafted and perfectly executed. The taste profiles are exotic and romantic. The quality of the food is just amazing. And the service is exceptional. Add the beautiful views, stunning architecture and classic Newport mansion decor, and the experience is simply exquisite.
Eating at this restaurant is a first class event and each time a unique experience never to be forgotten!
Sheer brilliance. We opted for the six course tasting menu which was fabulous. The risotto and skate were our favorite courses. Service was friendly, formal and on pointe. Wines were fairly priced. I cannot say enough about the brilliance of the courses. I did not know if Cara could rival the former Spiced Pear. But it certainly does! One of the best tasting menus in the country!
Friendly , knowledgeable wait staff. Outstanding wine parings. Every course had beautiful presentation and taste
Lovely setting . Sat by the fireplace. Excellent service. Perfect for a special occasion. Very attentive service.
I feel like reading these other reviews is like the Emperor’s New Clothes - no one wants to speak the truth for fear of being seen as foolish, uncultured or not in tune with the newest hot place to dine. Having traveled and dined all over the world, I can affirmatively state this this was one of the worst meals I have ever had. Perhaps it would not have seemed so utterly offensive if it were not for the $400 price tag. My husband and I are happy to (and often do) pay a high price for an outstanding meal- new and exciting dining experiences are our favorite thing. However, from the mushy, distasteful amuse bouche to the repulsive entree to the poorly executed dessert, this meal could not have been more of a disappointment. Given the nature of the other reviews, I suppose it’s possible that we dined here on a night where every single, solitary thing just went wrong. However, given the unlikeliness of that, I would advise taking all of these other “glowing” reviews with some level of scrutiny, and wonder whether they are just trying to jump on the bandwagon of praising the newest shiny object to go along with the pretense that it is something special... when it is not.
Nice place. But food paring was ok. Long time in between courses.
I requested "something special" for my wife's birthday through open table and each member of staff that waited on our table said happy birthday her. They brought her a special dessert without me having to even mention anything. Great attention to detail in both the service and the food. You get what you pay for and I've paid more for less of both!
The former Spiced Pear’s fine dining carries on at Cara. We celebrated Suzanne’s birthday in the best table overlooking First Beach. George and the restaurant manager were very engaging. Cocktails and a welcome taste of Brussels sprout pedals were perfect. Suzanne’s crab on endive appetizer and my pork belly with shredded fennel in soy reduction were each so tasty! Our entrees were lobster tortelloni and Wagyu short rib of beef. Hers was surf, mine turf again both excellent. Desserts were chocolate molten soufflé and cookies moussed. Complimentary orangcello aperitif was provided as were chocolates for Suzanne’s birthday. We met neighbors from So. Kingstown as we left who were also celebrating a birthday. They agreed that their Cara dining experience was superb
Our waiter, Cole was fantastic. The ambiance was very special. The food was excellent
and out of the ordinary. It's pricey, but worth it for a very special dinner.

Delicious! Delightful! And very intimate! From drinks to entree... a wonderful experience!
They had 3 different Pre fixe menus. Food was expensive but well worth it. The chocolate souffle was outstanding! We would definitely go back for a special occasion. Teddy, our server was the best, and the entire staff was super friendly, and professional.
A memorable Thanksgiving feast. I usually think the Thanksgiving dinner is nice mainly because of the company. At Cara the food was exceptional which for a turkey dinner is quite a feat.
Physically the restaurant is spectacular and the view to die for. The waitstaff was solicitous and charming without being annoying.
However the food was very disappointing. The tasting menu concept is confusing for two diners especially if one of them is a vegetarian. I had called previously to ask about the vegetarian options and they assured me that they were covered. Basically they were side dishes made larger or with offending items removed. My “entree” which I should have sent back was more of a side dish than a dinner- a pileup of hen o the woods mushrooms ( pricey mushrooms which can be delicious) was quite dreadful and should have been sent back. It was a large mushroom pile which can only be described as pickled. The squash soup was fine and the salad with greens, totally unremarkable. My desert with pomegranates was ok. I only ate everything because I was very hungry. My husband liked his turkey dinner option- thank heavens! I had to eat some of his veggies because I was still hungry.
Do not go if you are a vegetarian or vegan as the selections are afterthoughts with meat items removed. My mushroom “entree”came with chicken skin on top which was taken to the kitchen and removed.
Lovely place, lovely staff . At $400 for two people it should have been spectacular for both of us.
Lovely thanksgiving lunch!
