This was a very good fine dining experience with outstanding ambience and service. We thought the appetizers and desserts were excellent. However the entrées did not mean that standard. Both were seafood items which which could have been warmer when served.
Just top! Every little detail has been taken care off. Excellent service. We had a wonderful 25th anniversary dinner.
Food presentation unique and food itself delicious. Restaurant was very accommodating as we had a late arrival from out of town and we appreciated their flexibility. Setting is gorgeous and noise level perfect for conversation. Would highly recommend!
We had a disappointing visit. Our waiter was apparently new and not familiar with the menu. He was very nervous so we were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately, he was extremely slow and seemed to spend most of his time assisting another waiter with a party of 9. This caused lengthy delays between courses. We waited a significant amount of time for our drinks to arrive, and were informed the bar was backed up. We thusly did not order a second drink during the meal despite being at the restaurant for almost two hours. The first course was promising however, the main course is where everything went down hill. My halibut entree was dry and my wife’s filet was equally unpalatable. Desert was at best a disaster. We asked the waiter what was in the fig dish but he didn’t mention the largest component was something we don’t enjoy eating. He had walked away from our table to refresh his memory as to the contents of the dish, and yet still was unable to inform us of the actual contents. It took a full 20 minutes for it to arrive, longer than the soufflé at the table next to us. For some reason the air conditioning wasn’t turned on until after sundown, it was very warm for most of the evening. We were incredibly dissatisfied with our experience.
The food and atmosphere were excellent, however the service for a restaurant of this caliber was underwhelming. It took 15 minutes to receive water when we sat, and another 30 minutes before our first cocktails were received. The level of service continued to be slow and impersonal throughout the entire experience.
Cara is an absolutely stunning restaurant with impeccable service. The food was good but not great. I like the Prix fixe style but the selections are too limited. A little work on the menu and it will get 5 stars in every area.
My boyfriend and I celebrated my birthday at Cara, and we were so pleased. The tasting was great. George, our server, and everyone that works there are exceptional. We both did the Plunge tasting with no wine pairing. All the courses were great; definitely opened my tastebud palette! my favorite was the wagyu! Thank you for a great experience.
Amazing food, space and view. But the best part of the experience was Emily. She was extremely knowledgeable, very friendly and patient with all of our questions. Our experience was the highlight of our trip to Newport. We will be back! Thanks. Jon
Outstanding service food and ambiance. We really enjoyed it.
Everyone on the wait staff was amazing and friendly. The food is absolutely delicious, and the setting to take it all in is beautiful. Definitely worth a visit, I had a great time.
Exquisite service, wonderful food and beautiful view, what else could you want?
The guests I reserved the table for loved it and will be back.
Unbelievable! They spoil you.. service was unreal! The food is like no other. The filet mignon was mouth watering, best piece of steak I ever tasted!
Can’t beat the views and experience...
The service was exceptional and we were treated like royalty as we celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary. The food was amazing and the view and atmosphere spectacular. One of the best dining experiences of my life.
Very elegant setting. The food was great and the service was superb.
Air conditioning condensate dropped on my head till we moved the table. The table was 40 minutes late, we went to the outside bar for a drink and were not offered service at our table for 35 minutes. By the time we got seated at our table and had even a glass of water it was almost an hour and a half. The wine pairings exceeded the quality of the food. Disappointing from the summer of 2018 indeed when it was my favorite restaurant in NewPort
Outstanding experience, the food and service was impeccable. We did the six course forage menu paired with wine. Each course was well thought out and executed with perfection. My only disappointment was my husband leaving the box of chocolates the restaurant gave us in our Uber ride!
I have a mixed view of Cara. We sat in the dining room which is tasting menu only.
It was my husband's birthday so we opted for a 'special meal'.
My husband had the Plunge, a 6 course tasting and he was very happy with everything that he was offered. He especially loved the Crudo.
I chose the 3 course tasting and was less than satisfied with it. I selected the Baby Gem salad as my starter and I am still baffled by it. It consisted of about 8 small leaves, a mix of baby lettuce and red endive. There was no dressing to the 'salad' at all, not even a drizzle of olive oil. Instead, the leaves were stuck down into about a half a pound of goat cheese smeared onto the bottom of the plate. The goat cheese was the dressing? It was very strange and needless to say got a bit boring after the first bite or two.
My next course (entree) was the halibut. Just awful. My first red flag was that it smelled of fish. I even mentioned this to my husband, how strong the fish odor was. It was encrusted on one side with a green powder that was as unappetizing to the eye as it was to the palate.
My first bite confirmed that it was as awful as it looked. It was so dry that I couldn't even finish a bite without taking at least 5 drinks of water.
I tried turning the fish over thinking maybe the underside would be a little more moist and palatable. It was not. I had to send it back.
They did offer to give me something else, but really after that, my stomach had turned and I could no longer eat a main course.
I also chose the cheesecake as my dessert and it was very good.
They did comp my glass of rose to make up for the fish, which was the right thing to do at least.
I will also say tho that I became quite ill during the night that night and should've trusted my nose.
Cara is a very beautiful restaurant and I would come back, but would sit on the outside porch which has a totally different menu and is a bit more casual. The views are better from the porch as well.
Food was amazing - view was amazing and made my anniversary very special.
Given the high prices, our expectations for service and ambience were definitely not met. The food was superb, but when faced with simple requests, the restaurant seemed surprised and stumped and could not accommodate in a seemless manner. We went with price fix menu with wine pairing - hundreds of dollars spent but instead of feeling like royalty, we felt ripped off.
A totally unique dining experience with Great Ocean Vistas. Not inexpensive. The 6 course meal of chef-chosen small plates comprised almost 100 ingredients which I can't remember. Caviar, artichoke soup, scallops, duck, wagya beef plus dessert were all excellent and decorated with herbs, spices and vegetables. Service was perfect. Free valet parking.
Amazing dinner for our anniversary. Great atmosphere, very attentive staff, and the food was amazing. Overall great experience and would highly recommend.
The ambience, the view and the service were exemplary. The food, although good, did not quite match the standard expected.
It may sound illogical but I would go back. It is a rare commodity to be treated to an environment like Cara.
Celebrated our anniversary and it was fabulous!! Everything top notch and delicious. Just go!!
Excellent, attentive service. Great food and accommodating to our dieting restrictions. Ambience with ocean view sitting was spectacular.
We so wanted to love this restaurant after having enjoyed it a few years ago when it was called the Spiced Pear.
There are three menu options and we chose the three-course Crave menu.
From the start, the offerings were...odd. My husband began with oysters which were presented shucked in small bowl. They were fine. I had a salad with lettuce and goat cheese which was arranged on the plate with a large mound of goat cheese and the lettuce leaves arranged in a row sticking out of the cheese...odd.
For the main, my husband had filet mignon. It was fine.
My halibut was inedible. The thin slice of halibut was topped with a gelatinous goo of something called scallop mousse. It was not listed this way on the menu or I would not have ordered it. The fish was also drizzled with truffle oil...or something like truffle oil. Just too heavy for fish. I sent it back.
We dine out frequently and are not afraid to spend money on quality food. The night before, we ate at Bouchard’s and had (another!) amazing meal.
The waiter was apologetic and the manager came over to ask if he could get me something else. When I declined, he took the entree off the check.
On a good note: the staff was lovely and the bread and dessert were quite good. Cara has either managed to hire a good pastry chef or purvey their bakery items from a good place.
We would not likely return for a meal but the location is terrific so would sit on the deck in good weather and enjoy a cocktail.
Good although asked for poached eggs cooked through they came runny and were sent back. That disrupted the experience.
The service and food was outstanding. With views of Easton beach, this is a real gem for a special occasion
Service and food was outstanding. A place for a special celebration with an elegant dining experience. Three course was more than adequate for us. Fine dining with great views and ambiance. Highly recommended.
Chef Matt was very personable and explained how to prepare lamb. The wine steward was helpful and generous. The specialty event was a great experience, just an intimate group of 6. We will definitely participate again.
Cara was very nice - everything is well done, but it is simply nothing special. I don't mean that in a negative way, it was an enjoyable meal, but one that you could have had in many, many restaurants. The pre-fixed menu, of course, limits severely your choices. For example, the only appetizer that did contain some form of fish or shellfish was a very ordinary salad. The salad was fine, some Romaine lettuce, goat cheese and (allegedly) a vinaigrette dressing - but just nothing special at all. It is a nice place, pretty views, food is OK - but this is not haute cuisine.
Dinner was exceptional. The Forage prix fixe was vegetable forward and perfect.
The ambiance is marvelous. Nice quiet atmosphere and attentive waitstaff. Wine steward and waiter knowledgeable and friendly But surprisingly, the food was only fair. The ambiance, the setting still made for a lovely evening.
This was my second meal at Cara. I was spending time in Newport to simply enjoy Newport as well as celebrate my birthday. I had told Cara that I was celebrating my birthday so I was curious to see what would happen. Not only did every single server wish me Happy Birthday, but I also had a lovely Happy Birthday sign made in chocolate added to my dessert. It was a fantastic meal - just as delicious as my first time there. It was a little more quiet this time since it was the off season, but there was still a lot of people in the dining area. I was seated in one of the "prime" seats in the quiet area of the dining room where I could watch the ocean through the glass windows. It was also restaurant week so I did get to enjoy some specialty items that might not otherwise have been on the typical menu. The service was fantastic as well - I never felt rushed or ignored. I'll definitely be coming back!
An evening at Cara is an unforgettable gastronomic event. The tasting we had was flawless, from the service to every delightful morsel that was put before us. This is a very special place, perfect for celebrating special occasions. Or just the fact that it's a Wednesday night and the sun is out.
This lovely ocean view restaurant at the Hotel Chanler offers fine dining and great service. My crab appetizer was delicious and my filet mignon was high quality in a wonderful bearnaise sauce. My husband's skate wings were an upscale fish and chips and his small game bird entree was very good. A great choice for a different kind of food and special occasions.
Excellent all around! Service, ambiance, view, and of course the food and wine pairings.
Some of the most amazing food I’ve ever had. Great wines available. Service is second to none!! A true fine dining experience. Cara has it figured out!! Phenomenal in every way.
Really worth trying
