Mother’s Day meal at the newly renovated Captain Whidbey. We never caught our waitress name as she never introduced herself. We think she was having an off day as our appetizers came out with our food. Thankfully the food was amazing! The bartender (Forest) was great also, very chatty and informed. Every staff member except our waitress was great and welcoming. We will be back.

The freshly revitalized Captain Whidbey Inn is our new go-to for brunch and entertaining visiting friends. We stopped in for brunch on Mother's Day. My first impression was the beautifully decorated dining room. It is very spacious and has a jaw-dropping view of Penn Cove. Our server was Forrest. He was friendly and attentive. When the food came, I knew my high hopes for the Captain Whidbey were completely satisfied. I ordered the breakfast board which was artfully done and delicious. Everyone at the table was happy with their food and we were surprised at the reasonable prices. Captain Whidbey costs the same as your average island eatery, but with better food, service, and incredible atmosphere. It knocked our socks off. Definitely make time to catch a meal here, you'll be glad you did. The patio isn't open yet, it's being redone, but this summer it will be a glorious spot for lunch.

Thank you so much for the wonderful review! We are all looking forward to next month when we officially open the patio and release our lunch menu. We hope to see you enjoying a glass of wine with one of our local seafood lunch dishes, out on our sunny deck, surrounded by the beautiful scenery very soon!

I think for the customer that grew up with the historical Inn, it can be hard to see changes in menu and ambience. The younger, more modern, hip atmosphere took some adjusting for me although I appreciate the attempt to keep some of the Captains original charm. I'm in my early fifties, I get the vibe they are going for but I prefer feeling like I'm walking back in time a bit and revisiting a rich and intriqueing history. Although some of the original old photos were still up, I missed the historic log lodge feel that used to be more prominent. Loved the new lobby furniture though. The dining area was what I felt was lacking the original lodge feel. And the addition of the sixties, lounge modern beverage and utensil station in dining area seemed an odd mix. Love the addition of meat and cheese boards for social hour but felt that the choices were a bit obscure and had difficulty being overly excited about picking through the abundance of fermented veggies and duck breast for the meat selection. Overall, the new bar layout is wonderful and inviting. It's a wonderful location and has unending potential.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are pleased to hear you find the bar inviting! Here's a fun fact about the new bar: it features hand painted tiles that depict the flora and fauna that can be found near the Inn and on the island. There is also a poem on the tiles by David Whyte that has been translated into Morse code, "You must learn one thing, the world was made to be free in." We look forward to the opportunity to serve you again.

The ambience and service started great. Food presentation was excellent and it is served family style. We ordered the Tomahawk ribeye, and upon asking the rareness of their ‘medium’ was informed that it is on the bloody side we asked for ‘ medium to well’. It came out over cooked, although tender but also very under seasoned. And at a $79 price point i do expect it to come as I asked.
When asked by our server and the front end manager if ‘everything was tasting good’ i let them know of the steak being very over cooked and very under seasoned they said they ‘would pass that back to the chef’. No offer of recompense was made and so it kind of ruined the experience for us. This restaurant Feels like a teenager trying on expensive clothes, but they don’t have the wherewithal or fortitude to know what they should be wearing.

Very disappointing

We are disappointed as well that your experience was less than the excellence we strive for. We had hoped that the two desserts that were comped from your bill would end your meal on a high note, but now see that this offering as well fell short of the mark. Since your visit, the chef has altered the way in which some of our dishes are prepared and presented, giving serious consideration to your comments. We thank you for visiting us and for providing us with your feedback.

Too expensive for the amount & quality of food. Pasta plate was good. Salmon plate was sparse. Small piece of tasteless salmon with a side of mashed potato. We first eat with our eyes and this is an Uninspiring presentation which led to disappointing taste. I could make this at home. We go out to experience something unique in taste and looks. It’s too bad because it’s a great location. Another disappointment was the bread. If I have to pay for bread then I want it fresh and warm. We had to ask for it to be warmed up and got bread/pita that had already been put on a grill who knows when and left sitting around.

Overall disappointing. Got better chefs. Get more variety. Stop charging for bread. You’re not that exclusive.

Captain Whidbey recently reopened after several months of rehab on the historical property. Now under new ownership, I was curious to see the transformation. We had brunch, and the food was OK, but the service was lackluster. We were the only diners in the room, yet were seated at a very wobbly window table with no cutlery, etc. The staff could use some training. I realize they just reopened, but was disappointed. I live nearby, so will give them time to polish their act and revisit for dinner before the summer crowds descend.

The Inn is closed! It's closed for renovations until April 2019. I thought someone would contact me from either Open Table or the Inn to tell me that my reservation couldn't happen but no one did. (I found out from a 3rd party that it wouldn't be open, so at least I didn't make a useless trip up there!) I love the Inn and hope they are able to renovate while maintaining the inn's character. I'm happy to let people know SOMEHOW that these reservations won't work! Don't go until after April 2019! I'll rate it with stars using my last visit's data, which was a long time ago , only because I have to say something with the stars.

Yesterday at noon we celebrated a dear friend's 90th birthday in your 'pub/bar' room which turned out to be the perfect place for the event. A quartet of men from the Shifty Sailors, a local singing group, arrived (as per our request) just as we finished our meal. They sang two versions of "Happy Birthday" to him, then followed up with a few more lively songs. The pub area provided plenty of room for the singing group, and enough more room for other diners to come in and participate. The ambience of the pub/bar is perfect for group gatherings such as this.
Your entire staff was excellent, including the front desk hostess to the very last wait person! We have never been more impressed, though we have been fairly frequent dining customers since 1986.
Most important of all, though, is that our 90-year-old friend is still looking for words to properly express how much fun it was and what a wonderful time he had there.....you are, by the way, one of his favorite and most-often-frequented restaurants on Whidbey Island. He requested your restaurant in which to celebrate this most special of all days. You will be highly recommended by us!
Thank you!

The Inn is a wonderful historic building on the water. There were several things that were disappointing. The lobby area is wonderful, but there was no fire in the fireplace even though it was a very chilly evening. There was no one to greet guests in the lobby. We walked into the dining area, and again there was no one there. My guest and I seated ourselves, and it was at least 5 minutes before a waitperson brought us beverages. We ordered appetizers to begin with, but they showed up at the same time as our full meal. Waited at least 30 minutes with no food at all. The food was good, and well presented. Without the ambience of this beautiful 1907 building, it would not have been worth the lack of service to eat there.

Captain Whidbey is a very special place that can’t be missed when you’re on Whidbey Island. Dating from 1907, this rustic and comfy log inn has a fabulous setting under tall trees at the edge of Penn Cove. Recently under new management, the service is great and the food is quite good. My apple crisp dessert was impossible to cut and dried out, but the macaroni and cheese with crab was good. The Madrona Margarita was great! We enjoyed a fun family meal while the moon shown down on the cove.

We had visited a few years ago and had a very bad experience. We had heard it was under new ownership so decided to give it a second try. This proved to be a MUCH better experience. The food was good, although a little over priced for what we got. I had the $14 Madrona Margarita from the bar that was tasty, but weak and WAY over priced.
The service was great, friendly and efficient staff.
Great place for tourists since the Inn has great island ambiance.
We'll be back for our next special occasion.

When we entered, the greeter acted aa though we were speaking a foreign language when we asked where the wheelchair ramp was. She didn't know! Come to find out, it was so steep that two men could not push this small wheelchair up the ramp. We had to "walk" our friend up the front stairs...very difficult, especially in a pouring rain! A downright hostile atmosphere to people thus disabled. We hope you have registered plans with the appropriate government office to come into compliance with the ADA requirements.

Then our waiter Sam began to make our evening better with excellent drinks, excellent service and very nice food. Your GF markings on the menu were very helpful because my husband has celiac disease.

My apologies. I first sent this review with the wrong name of our waiter: it was Sam, not George.

This was disappointing! I had made a reservation well in advance to be seated at a window table to enjoy the view. When we arrived, there was no one to greet us and a server told us to sit any where. There were no window tables left, so we chose a quiet table in the corner. The food was nothing out of the ordinary. Service was fairly good. Not sure if I would return anytime soon!

First time with new ownership; had not been there for years. The menu is very limited (dinner). The only odd thing was the Cioppino. It was solid tomato sauce, thick. Thought maybe they used the Shakshuka from brunch? Had no broth, no vegetable, no herb. Mussels were excellent. Charcuterie platter was okay, nothing special. No homemade sausage as menu described and all was standard deli meat.

We'll check back soon to see how it's going. Diana served us in the bar and she was terrific.

stayed in the Inn and wanted a quiet patio dinner. Service was poor, food came with other than original waiter, we had to ask for bread that came with shell fish dish, then never seen waiter again until final bill.
Patio seating available looked nice but our table was next to walkway to waiter order desk and opposite from food prep. Wood plank porch noise was excessive as waiters walked back in forth between stations. I realize the rustic setting is the draw but the waiters should be aware of the noise they cause. The shellfish mussels and clams were over cooked and cold. Overall I wouldn't go back or recommend dining there.

We were seated at a beautiful outdoor table with a great view of Penn Cove. There was live music (I guess it's every Thursday night) which was a nice feature. The food was excellent.
