About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for special occasions
  • Good for groups
A Baltimore landmark since 1978, Captain James Landing Restaurant has earned the name "most unique eatery" in Baltimore City. For starters we are the only restaurant shaped like a merchant vessel. Five brothers created a restaurant in the 70"s with the goal of providing quality service to the citizens of Baltimore, Maryland as well as the thousands of tourist that visit our Monumental City. Our Waterfront Crab House (located adjacent of our restaurant) was awarded in 2012 "#1 Best Crabs in Baltimore" by Baltimore Magazine. Our Crab House is the one spot in the city where you can eat steamed crabs with a true waterfront seating. Water Taxi Stop #14 brings you right to our waterfront location.

As always the service and food was perfect! We ordered from the menu Instead of eating crabs. A lot of tablets seemed to be enjoying them.

Just terrible. Bad food. Bad service. Tourist trap. We almost walked out after we got sat down. I wish we had.

The food and service were excellent at Captain James Restaurant. It was not busy on Tuesday evening, and our server, Joyce, was wonderful (she was also in charge of the bar). The Monday-Thursday standard specials are worth checking out, especially because the portion sizes are big. The crab cake is one of the more underrated ones in the city for the price. Try the crab spanakopita appetizer - a surprise pairing (even for native Marylanders) that did not disappoint, and the basil mojito was a revelation. A nice night out in Baltimore at a locally-owned place that does the little things well.

Great for my birthday celebration. You can eat crabs inside in A/C OR outside at their pier location.

Nice people, food was great especially the cream of crab soup, (ask for a touch of sherry to add). Service was outstanding. Will definitely be returning.

We chose this restaurant to celebrate our son’s graduation from high school. We had a reservation for 9 PM. However, the graduation ran over and I called the restaurant and they still accommodated us half an hour later. It was six of us. Our server Michelle was exceptional! The food was so delicious and they made a really nice Mojito. That was amazing! I will definitely go back there and I recommend anyone to try this place out for your seafood fix.

FAQs

Portions at Captain James Landing are generally generous, many guests say entrees and platters are plentiful and often leave enough to take home. Seafood platters, crab legs and broiled entrees are called hearty, though a few appetizers were described as small or pricey by some guests. If you like big portions, share an appetizer and pick a main or the broiled seafood platter for good value.

Captain James Landing keeps long daily hours: Mon–Thu 10:00 AM–10:00 PM, Fri 10:00 AM–11:00 PM, Sat 9:00 AM–11:00 PM, Sun 9:00 AM–10:00 PM. Brunch is offered (guests mention all-day brunch), so mornings and evenings are both options, call if you plan a holiday or large party.

Yes, families and children dine here often. Guests report birthday parties, family brunches, and multi‑generational gatherings; the atmosphere is casual and welcoming rather than formal. There’s no explicit kids’ menu mentioned in reviews, so consider early seating or calling ahead if you need menu flexibility for young children.

Yes, the restaurant operates an adjacent Waterfront Crab House (on the water) that focuses on steamed crabs and waterfront seating. Guests mention a sister location called Captain James Crabhouse on the water; the waterfront spot is popular for all‑you‑can‑eat crabs on some evenings. If you want true waterfront seating, ask about the Crab House when you call.

Yes, there is outdoor/deck seating at the adjacent Waterfront Crab House and guests describe dining on the deck landing for steamed crabs and seafood. Several guests enjoyed outdoor crab feasts and the waterfront atmosphere; if outdoor or waterfront seating is important, call ahead since the Crab House and deck can fill up quickly.

Midweek (Tuesday–Thursday) is often the best choice if you prefer a quieter meal and quicker service. If you want the full lively experience, Friday or Saturday evenings deliver that bustling seafood-house energy. Sunday can be great for brunch but expect it to fill up for holiday brunches and special occasions, reservations help any day.

Yes, guests frequently bring families and celebrate birthdays here, and the restaurant is described as family-friendly and handicapped accessible. There are long central tables for large groups and clerks advise dropping off older or mobility-challenged guests by the entrance before parking because crossing the street to the lot can be tricky. For larger parties or accessibility needs, call ahead so staff can accommodate you.

Yes, Captain James Landing accepts private parties and hosts group celebrations. Guests have held birthdays, Mother’s Day and Easter brunches, and large parties (10–14+) with positive experiences. For private events, contact the restaurant ahead of time to reserve space and discuss menu, seating and any AV or accessibility needs.

Casual dress is appropriate. The restaurant markets itself as casual dining and guests typically visit in relaxed attire for family dinners, brunches, and seafood nights. If you have a private event or special celebration, you can dress up a bit, but everyday visits are comfortable in casual clothing.

Captain James Landing offers a ship‑themed main dining room with long central tables for large parties, an upstairs area, and an adjacent Waterfront Crab House/deck with true waterfront seating for steamed crabs. Guests mention an upstairs dining area and an outdoor deck landing; the restaurant also accommodates private parties. If you need a specific layout or outdoor/waterfront seating, call ahead to request it.

Warm, casual, and distinctly Baltimore, the interior is ship‑shaped and nautical, with a lively, family-friendly vibe. Many guests praise the cozy, fun atmosphere and energetic service; expect some bustle and occasional loud moments (speakers and long communal tables can raise the volume). It’s ideal for celebrations, seafood nights, and casual outings rather than a hushed, romantic dinner.

Yes, Captain James Landing can work for a casual, lively date night, especially if you’re after fresh seafood and a fun Baltimore vibe. Expect a bustling, family-friendly atmosphere rather than a quiet, romantic setting; some guests found it lively and noisy, while others enjoyed a relaxed evening. For a quieter experience choose a midweek or early evening seating and request a table away from speakers. Call ahead if you want waterfront seating at the adjacent Crab House.

Yes, guests frequently suggest calling ahead for special requests. Popular requests include seating preferences (away from speakers, group seating), crabs or specific seafood availability, and accessibility needs. The staff and management are mentioned often as accommodating, so call the restaurant to confirm requests, especially for large parties or waterfront/crabhouse seating.

Busiest: Friday and Saturday evenings and holiday brunches or special events (many guests report bustling weekend crowds). Quietest: midweek nights and earlier dinner hours tend to be calmer, and some guests specifically said Wednesdays and weekday afternoons were quieter. For a low‑noise visit, aim for weekday dining or an early seating.

Yes, guests report holiday service (Easter brunch, Mother’s Day) and special holiday gatherings, so the restaurant does open for some public holidays and brunch events. Holiday hours may vary, so call ahead or check with the restaurant when planning a holiday celebration to confirm hours and reservations.

The best time depends on your goal: choose midweek or early evening for a quieter meal and attentive service; expect a lively, busy scene on Friday and weekend nights. If you want crabs or waterfront seating, call ahead, guests say crabs sell out and the adjacent Crab House is popular. For brunch or group celebrations, reserve in advance to secure the table you want.
