Capitol Garage Ratings and Reviews
Come for the beer, don’t bother with the food.
I generally don’t write reviews. A restaurant has to be either incredibly superb or a train wreck to get a few words out of me.
This trip yo the Garage left me thinking somebody should contact the NTSB.
This was my third trip to the Garage in it’s current location. I used to frequent the place in the original location on L Street, and found it to be a decent place to grab a coffee and quick meal on the go.
In it’s newest iteration, it is smaller and has more of a pub vibe. My best advice is to look at the Garage as a place to snag a pint of beer or a glass of wine (they seemed to have a decent lineup of beer and wine), but it isn’t someplace I’d recommend as a restaurant.
My daughter and I each ordered NY Strip steaks, medium rare. Our meals arrived a good 30 minutes after we placed our orders, which wasn’t horrible - but the place wasn’t busy.
Our steaks were reasonably close to medium rare, but they hit the table cold. They were oddly prepared, literally perched atop what appeared to be a quarter pound mound of whipped, semi-warm, semi-solid (not melted or melting) garlic butter. I took a small bite of the butter mound, thinking it might be mashed potatoes. ... Nope! The others in our group also complained of cold food, and were underwhelmed by their selections.
Again, this was our third - and final - trip to the Garage. The first two were for weekend brunch. These visits were more about service issues (forgotten & messed up orders) than funked-up food.
First time here for Brunch. Although a bit “chilly” we sat outside because of our doggie. The service - Amrita you are awesome! - and food quality were outstanding! Great spot for “people watching” and the value for price paid is great. Would definitely recommend to others - especially dog parents- they are VERY dog-friendly!! We’ll be back...
Came in for dinner before theatre show. Service was slow...had to actually get our waiters attention to ask for a drink while we waited for the rest of our party. Food took quite a while to come out (place wasn't too busy)...check took forever (again, had to track down our waiter after we had been finished for about 10 min). Accidentally got the lunch menu first, which looked better than the dinner menu. I'm thinking this place must be much better for lunch. Dinner here seems like an afterthought.
Upon arriving, the "host", said " reservations only" to which I replied, Yes, 7:30 reservations. He said about 10 minutes was all we had to wait. Being Christmas day, we expected a little wait. Finally, we were seated at 8:20 but it was not a big deal. We ordered the Turkey dinner, but they were out by that time. So, give us each the pork roast. It was not a pork roast, but a boneless pork chop, which was very, very overcooked and tough to cut with only a butter knife. No real meat knives in the place. The flavor was not great either, bland, bland, bland.
But, the worst part was the mac and cheese side dish. It was awful !!! Generally, it was tasteless !!
Does anyone here actually taste the food they serve?? It was more like school cafeteria food, but less flavor.
Dinner cost us $72.00 and some change. This was just the price of the meal, with tea and coffee to drink. We truly felt duped afterwards. But, we always tip our server...
Needless to say, we will never dine here again...
To be fair it was Christmas Day and this was probably the only place open. It wasn’t so much that the service was poor, our waitress was rather good but they were understaffed. I could tell when we were seated in the corner we may be in danger of being forgotten. And I was correct. We sat for 10 minutes at least before anybody asked us if we wanted even water to drink.
Also my daughter really wanted the veggie burger but the last one was sold to a table that was seated after us. Granted this table was closer to the action and harder to ignore but still.
Moral of the story, don’t go on a holiday and if you must, fight for a table closer to the servers/staff
Capital Garage was one of the few restaurants open on Christmas Day, being new to the area and not having family nearby, my wife and I decided to make reservations. Good thing we did, because they were packed! Great food, especially if you’re looking for vegetarian options. Service was a little slow, but that’s likely due to the fact it was Christmas and they were super busy. Definitely recommend checking it out for a casual dining experience with a fun people watching environment.
This is a tiny restaurant with a supposedly extensive bar. The menu is limited to just a few items of which half are vegetarian. They have a small kids menu as well. The service was slow and the bar was out of quite a few basic alcohols and taps (even the ones on their special drink menu) which put a damper on our festivities. Price for the menu items seemed fair but it's not someplace I'd go again as the food was nothing special.
They were busy but let us know that ordering smaller plates would be faster since we had an event at The Community Center we needed to go to. They kept our time schedule in mind and we got a great price on everything and the food was exceptional. I love coming to Capitol Garage and they have great beer on tap which is a great bonus too!!!
This used to be one of our favorite brunch spots in Sacramento and never minded waiting an hour to get in. We recently moved back to the area and were excited to go back. It was shocking to see so few people there. The hostess was unfriendly and seemed quite unhappy with her job. Our server was good. Nothing on the menu sounded appealing so we went somewhere else.
Restaurant 1/2 full, but the wait was 40 minutes for food. Luckily the waitress told us before we ordered. Hoping it was just some short staff in the kitchen. But way too noisy of a place to even have a conversation. And we were just there for brunch before show
We made our reservation same day on Open Table, about an hour in advance. When we arrived they stated a 20-minute wait and that they couldn’t always accommodate same day reservations. My aunt went to order her bottomless mimosa at the bar, while we waited, and they wouldn’t serve her until we were seated. Luckily they were able to seat us only 5 mins after our reservation time.
It took a little over 1 hour to get our food from the kitchen after placing our order. The server was really nice and did bring out a complimentary bread pudding. And she did get my 4 year old’s breakfast out first, thankfully. Food was good. The kitchen was really slow, I think they were short staffed.
We were seated immediately and ordered within 10 minutes of that. Yet, we had to wait just over an hour for our food! For a party of 3 whose order consisted of eggs, veggies, and fruit, that is unacceptable. The food actually was fantastic but we sadly didn’t get to enjoy it much because due to our long wait we had to scarf down a few bites and leave for the event we were attending. Super disappointing and completely defeated the whole purpose of making a reservation.
It was my nephews 6th birthday, I decided to take the family out for his birthday for brunch. My reservations was for 8 which I booked 2 days in advance. I arrived 15 minutes early waited an additional 40 minutes for us to be seated.
We ordered our food and took over 90 minutes for us to receive it. While everyone that arrived after us received there food.
Sad to say I've been to capital garage numerous times, and spent great amount of money.
Sad to say poor service that and disappointed. Come on garage get it together
We had a large party and they were wonderful accommodating our group. It took a while to get service, but once we had a waitress it was great. The staff was great, the food was delicious and very reasonably priced. Would definitely come here again. It was a little loud, which was not a problem for us, but not a place to go if you want a quiet atmosphere. ;-)
Service was fine for coffee but breakfast took forever. 3 table were sat after us and were fed before we got our food. Food was unique flavors but greasy. Chickpeas in one of our meals were half cooked. Anyway we eat out a lot and this was an experiment to try something new and fine for the experience but we won't be back.
I love the plethora of vegetarian options. It makes choosing a dish so difficult in the best way imaginable. I have yet to be disappointed by their food. I will not I wasn’t loving their Bloody Mary, which is one of my favorite parts of brunch. It was watery and lacked flavor. Despite that I still love Capitol Garage and would gladly return.
