I had the turkey dinner which was dry and tasted like it was heated up and not fresh. The gravy was thick and tasteless. My friends had hamburgers and they were ok with them.
We went because it was a short walk from convention center and had vegan offerings for my guest from Seattle. The wine was good. Server was excellent, kitchen a little slow for such a quiet night. Vegan burger was just described as ok. Fries so so. I had the CG burger and enjoyed fresh bun, tasty meat, tomatoe, was green and lettuce limp. My fries were great.
but salad was lacking in crispness. Great oatmeal and raisin was very good. Coffees good.
Our group went for 'Dinner and a Drag Show,' and had a fantastic time. In the past we've had amazing meals at Capitol Garage, and expect we will again, as we've dined here numerous times over the years - but the dinner specials we ordered (the steak, the portabella mushroom) were bland and lukewarm. The place was absolutely packed, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We'll most likely be back this Saturday for the show.
It was actually a good lay back lunch. The wine was nonexistent but they have a full bar. Bloodies were excellent. Place is clean, menu was interesting sandwiches, tacos, hamburgers etc. The food was good, I had shrimp tacos, my friend had a burrito. The biggest burrito I've seen and was told it was good. Very inexpensive.
Was there on a Saturday night. The place was extremely busy, and there appeared to be only one server. It took over an hour to get our food, which we then had to wolf down, as we had tickets to the theatre. Not the server's fault that they were understaffed, but we also had to ask several times for water and our drinks.
Also, their wine list sucks.
Nice vegetarian options. Good bar. You can find unpretentious but good food if you're gluten free, veg, vegan, keto, or just a regular person.
Enjoyed the meal but it was so noisy that conversation with my wife was almost impossible.
Never had tried The Capitol Garage despite driving by it for 20+ years when traveling thru downtown Sac. Everything was nice from the funky decor to the pleasant service. The only downside was that it took 60 minutes from entering to the arrival of our brunch food. That seems that there was a glitch in the system somewhere as our orders were not that complicated (and we did not modify any dish from the standard menu). Will I go back- probably - but it may take another 20+ years.
Come for the beer, don’t bother with the food.
I generally don’t write reviews. A restaurant has to be either incredibly superb or a train wreck to get a few words out of me.
This trip yo the Garage left me thinking somebody should contact the NTSB.
This was my third trip to the Garage in it’s current location. I used to frequent the place in the original location on L Street, and found it to be a decent place to grab a coffee and quick meal on the go.
In it’s newest iteration, it is smaller and has more of a pub vibe. My best advice is to look at the Garage as a place to snag a pint of beer or a glass of wine (they seemed to have a decent lineup of beer and wine), but it isn’t someplace I’d recommend as a restaurant.
My daughter and I each ordered NY Strip steaks, medium rare. Our meals arrived a good 30 minutes after we placed our orders, which wasn’t horrible - but the place wasn’t busy.
Our steaks were reasonably close to medium rare, but they hit the table cold. They were oddly prepared, literally perched atop what appeared to be a quarter pound mound of whipped, semi-warm, semi-solid (not melted or melting) garlic butter. I took a small bite of the butter mound, thinking it might be mashed potatoes. ... Nope! The others in our group also complained of cold food, and were underwhelmed by their selections.
Again, this was our third - and final - trip to the Garage. The first two were for weekend brunch. These visits were more about service issues (forgotten & messed up orders) than funked-up food.
Amazing vegan options! Would recommend for vegans. Amazing vegan options! Would recommend for vegans. Amazing vegan options! Would recommend for vegans.
First time here for Brunch. Although a bit “chilly” we sat outside because of our doggie. The service - Amrita you are awesome! - and food quality were outstanding! Great spot for “people watching” and the value for price paid is great. Would definitely recommend to others - especially dog parents- they are VERY dog-friendly!! We’ll be back...
Worst restaurant experience. Arrived on time for a 6:15 reservation. At 6:40 our server finally arrived to take drink orders. Food was terrible, service was unacceptable. Never again.
Stopped in for a quick dinner before a show. Food is good, service also is good. The location is great and there is a discount for attending the theater.
Came in for dinner before theatre show. Service was slow...had to actually get our waiters attention to ask for a drink while we waited for the rest of our party. Food took quite a while to come out (place wasn't too busy)...check took forever (again, had to track down our waiter after we had been finished for about 10 min). Accidentally got the lunch menu first, which looked better than the dinner menu. I'm thinking this place must be much better for lunch. Dinner here seems like an afterthought.
Was New Years Day so not much Open so busy. Took hour to get our food. My husband loved his omelette. I had vanilla pancakes which to me tasted like buckwheat. Very Very Heavy!!
Not impressed with mine at all!
Will probably not go back.
We started off the new year w/ delicious vegan burritos for breakfast. Wishing they served them for dinner, too.
Love the many vegan options!!!
Best Benedict I have ever had; their spicy shrimp Benedict. The place overall needs a good cleaning though. Dusty/dirty :-(
Upon arriving, the "host", said " reservations only" to which I replied, Yes, 7:30 reservations. He said about 10 minutes was all we had to wait. Being Christmas day, we expected a little wait. Finally, we were seated at 8:20 but it was not a big deal. We ordered the Turkey dinner, but they were out by that time. So, give us each the pork roast. It was not a pork roast, but a boneless pork chop, which was very, very overcooked and tough to cut with only a butter knife. No real meat knives in the place. The flavor was not great either, bland, bland, bland.
But, the worst part was the mac and cheese side dish. It was awful !!! Generally, it was tasteless !!
Does anyone here actually taste the food they serve?? It was more like school cafeteria food, but less flavor.
Dinner cost us $72.00 and some change. This was just the price of the meal, with tea and coffee to drink. We truly felt duped afterwards. But, we always tip our server...
Needless to say, we will never dine here again...
waited forever for food and the drinks were watered down
cake was awful
Thanks for being open on Christmas Day. Service was slow but it was VERY busy. Food was just okay. Nice to have vegan options.
It was nice that they were open for christmas dinner.
To be fair it was Christmas Day and this was probably the only place open. It wasn’t so much that the service was poor, our waitress was rather good but they were understaffed. I could tell when we were seated in the corner we may be in danger of being forgotten. And I was correct. We sat for 10 minutes at least before anybody asked us if we wanted even water to drink.
Also my daughter really wanted the veggie burger but the last one was sold to a table that was seated after us. Granted this table was closer to the action and harder to ignore but still.
Moral of the story, don’t go on a holiday and if you must, fight for a table closer to the servers/staff
Capital Garage was one of the few restaurants open on Christmas Day, being new to the area and not having family nearby, my wife and I decided to make reservations. Good thing we did, because they were packed! Great food, especially if you’re looking for vegetarian options. Service was a little slow, but that’s likely due to the fact it was Christmas and they were super busy. Definitely recommend checking it out for a casual dining experience with a fun people watching environment.
Th food took over an hour to get to our table and then it look like it was from Denny’s restaurant! If you can’t handle being open on a holiday than don’t!
This is a tiny restaurant with a supposedly extensive bar. The menu is limited to just a few items of which half are vegetarian. They have a small kids menu as well. The service was slow and the bar was out of quite a few basic alcohols and taps (even the ones on their special drink menu) which put a damper on our festivities. Price for the menu items seemed fair but it's not someplace I'd go again as the food was nothing special.
Went stag. Had a burger and a couple of martinis. Clientele seemed nice. Suddenly it was a reggae bar! Whuuuuttt? Pretty random but also pretty cool.
We ordered mostly vegetarian and vegan items. Food was just not good. We will not be back
Eclectic and cute. Decent selection for brunch with many drinks to choose from. Service was good considering it was a busy day and time. They had a nice patio but it was too cold to use.
They were busy but let us know that ordering smaller plates would be faster since we had an event at The Community Center we needed to go to. They kept our time schedule in mind and we got a great price on everything and the food was exceptional. I love coming to Capitol Garage and they have great beer on tap which is a great bonus too!!!
They were out of Chicken and pork at 6:30pm. That was weird. The turkey and gravy dinner looked good but they did not have mashed potatoes.
