We enjoyed Capellini a few times since it reopened. It seemed things were going well but suddenly the owner decided to close and turn it into a sports bar that will reopen in July. Just what folks looking for a more sophisticated spot in San Mateo that is already loaded with noisy sport bar type of joints don't need . Not looking forwarded to a return visit and from the comments of other diners and staff, neither are they. Better hope the younger and nosier crowd works for Mr. Kim..

Having not had the pleasure of visiting Capellini Restaurant in its prior life, I have no comparison, except what friends have said. We were there in the daytime for a special occasion lunch. The restaurant features beautiful wood and large windows, letting in lots of natural light. We were seated near others, but separated by a barrier and we never noticed the others. The service was helpful and attentive. We enjoyed our Insalata Mista and Fettucini with Clam Sauce (Vongole), ending our meal with a wonderful Chocolate Cake with whipped cream and strawberries.

The food was great - especially the seafood dishes and the prosciutto pizza. The waitstaff are ALWAYS very nice and courteous and accommodating. I love the bloody mary, too! The salmon was the best I've ever had! Thanks for making our event enjoyable.

The service was terrific. Thank you, Nicolas. The first time we ate at the new Capellini's, a new waiter with a fake Italian accent did not know the difference between bruschetta and prosciutto. It was great to see Nicolas there. The old Capellini's was my very favorite restaurant; I struggle with this new version. I want to at least like it, but so many things are broken. The (old) NY strip was one of the very best steaks I ever had . . . and I eat at at many of the best steak houses all over the U.S., e.g. Lugers, Bobby Van's, LGs, etc. The ribeye on this menu is a joke. A non-prime cut of meat likely bought at Costco, covered in a fifty cent glaze and sold for 42 dollars. Puh-lease! And don't get me started on the red wine list: A 15 dollar bottle of CAB from Paso Robles (Daout) with ABSOLUTELY no body sold for 14 dollars a glass. Who's kidding whom? Someone should be ashamed. Bring back the Educated Guess and the Conn Creek. If you do, watch me buy a bottle! The menu card is also broken. I get it that you don't want to completely copy the old Capellini's, but why on God's name would you take the Brownie off of the desert card? There is no chocolate cake of any kind on the menu. Have you lost your minds? Also, coffee ice cream in profiteroles? Seriously? Do you sell many? Try vanilla. Why not a bread pudding, too? lf this incarnation of a great name in local restaurants wants to succeed, it needs to channel some of the old Capellini's, while keeping some of the new things it is doing well, like the lasagne and egg plant parmigiano, which are both very good. I will return at least two more times, and if the steak, red wine and desert offerings do not improve, then I will not return and will instead wait for this incarnation to close, too.

Wife & I had dinner at Capellini's on 4/23/16. Service was excellent, food was also excellent, (Nice size portions), and they had TABLE CLOTHS . (which is becoming rare). We will definitely be returning.

First time back at the re-opened Capellini's - drinks at the bar before our meal were good. Dinner was a disappointment - shared a calamari - which was well presented. Sadly my lasagne was dry and chewy - looked like it had been waiting around for a few days. My wife's minestrone was watery and tasteless - overall food was mediocre. On the plus side our waiter - Nelson? - was excellent. I'm not sure we'll be hurrying back.

The fried calamari was Extremely Chewy- sent it back. The beef carpaccio was almost frozen to the dish and the arugula had no dressing. The salmon that we asked for medium-rare came out brown and crispy. The lasagna was dried around the perimeter and lacked juice. The tiramisu was dry, no coffee flavor and tasteless.

Under the prior owners this was a terrific restaurant with good food, ambiance and service. The food with the new owners is mediocre at best. Service was fine although they forgot to cook one of our entrees which was awkward. They brought a free dessert to share to apologize for that slip up. Unless we hear the food has improved, we won't be back.
