Had a reservation for 7:30pm on Valentine’s Day. For some reason they couldn’t accept my reservation. The major issue I had was the hostess stating that they could seat us if we could be out in an hour in front of the entire waiting area. We were both embarrassed and promptly left and went elsewhere.
Historically we’ve had great experiences at Cantwell’s for brunch but this case was unacceptable.
I must say i enjoy the brunch here more than dinner. That said, we had a lovely meal; I had the Cantwell version of a BIG MA with fries and a pickle. Others had salmon and other burgers. Dessert was delicious.
Never had a bad experience at Cantwell’s. The food & service has always been good. I would recommend all my friends & family to go there.
Food is good. Prices are okay— especially burgers. Entrees are good. Beer and wine selection nice. Takes forever to get anything. Food or drink. Dinner took 2 hours.
We went for my husband's birthday. We were seated within five minutes for brunch. We sat right by the fireplace. (How cozy) It was a pleasant experience. The drinks were delicious. I think we will return, next time for dinner. My only complaint was the meat selection. No alternative for pork or beef.
Took my mom for her 62nd Birthday. She has told me several times what a wonderful time she had and the food was great!
Excellent food, service and atmosphere. Always a quality experience at Cantwell's.
We enjoy Cantwell's - we go often in the late afternoon as the place is quiet(er) . The food is good but the menu is limited and doesn't change as much as it should. The wait staff is largely young and pleasant; the reception area and staffing is probably the least attractive aspect of the Cantwell's experience as it is often abandoned or staffed by a young woman who has absolutely no clue about customer service (not rude, just 'unconscious').
Outstanding meals. Very creative. It was Tapas night and there were 4 items to chose from. My wife opted for pan seared scallops which would have been a good option for Tapas,. I had the pork tenderloin on sweet potatoe mashers and greens. Very well done.
Save room for desert. Ordered the French toast bread pudding. Fabulous.
Sat near the active fire place (gas vs wood logs). Nicely decorated for the holidays.
Jack provided us with outstanding service, food was fantastic and we enjoyed our visit at CantwellTavern and we will be back shortly.
It was a pleasant experience. Great food, a wonderful waitress and nice ambiance. The perfect date night!
Enjoyable relaxing and fun experience. Atmosphere of small and mid-sized rooms in early 1900’s building. Menu has local items that are tasty and very well presented. Great place for a special occasion (for us New Years Eve), or a afternoon meal. Found the service friendly and helpful, yet not intrusive. We have been here several times over the last couple of years and always enjoyed the experience. Definitely would recommend...
Friendly staff, outstanding food and always have the opportunity to have good conversations with others in the restaurant.
This was my second time this month I went for brunch - that says something! Excellent food, excellent brunch menu options, good pricing and all 4 times I’ve been to Cantwell’s this month (2 brunch 2 dinner) Taylor was my server. She is a cheerful excellent waitress.
Great food. Nice atmosphere. Sat by the fireplace.
Our second time there, and we will be back. Great appetizers as well. We love the location.
We absolutely love Cantwells! You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu and it changes seasonally. You won’t be disappointed!
Only negative was tavern chair was uncomfortable for one of our friends who has orthopedic issues, as we sat n talked over dinner for several hours. But we do realize this is a colonial tavern so we should have thought of that before meeting this friend there... our problem, not the chair or restaurants.
Staff was very accommodating n never made us feel we should leave.
Great and will go back
Very Nice Atmosphere - great food and place to take out of town family for dinner. They loved the historic building.
We ate in the bar before, but now years later discovered the dining room experience. Romantic atmosphere with delicious food choices. We will be back soon.
The building itself is beautiful and they do a great job with decor. The fireplaces in every room are delightful!! Our service was wonderful and our food, as always, was delicious. I will say unfortunately it seems recently to have trended under par of what it once was. Still a favorite, hope it changes direction back to what it was.
We went for Sunday brunch and everything was just great. Highly recommend it and make reservations or you will not get in, yes it is that popular. You will get great value and the food is incredible.
Cozy place. Nice ambiance. Pita chips were burnt, meal was okay. We've been here several times in the last 6 months ... consistency is an issue - Sunday brunch or dinner.
Good service, food was very tasty, served in a reasonable time and the restaurant provided a nice dining environment
All 5 of us were very pleased with out brunch - everything was wonderful tasting and looked great. The cinnamon roll was big enough for us to split while we waited for our food. The french toast was cooked just right and my sisters poached eggs on top of crab cakes was fabulous. Can't wait to go back for brunch soon. WHY did I wait so long to try brunch there considering I love eating lunch and dinner at Cantwell's!
Need cushions on chairs, uncomfortable . Need a better way for wait staff to deliver food upstairs. Customers should not have to move and wait for for staff to pass in the hallway.
Table was set for 6 in a rather tight room. Would have liked a bigger room for our gathering. Waiter was friendly...at first but when bread was requested, the response was "We only serve bread for dinner." Then, he started to get an attitude. First, not the right response if you are trying to convey professional customer service. Second, why NOT serve bread at lunch? Your bread is delicious and from what I have heard, what most people enjoy! Overall, enjoyed the lunch - this was our second visit to the restaurant.
Cantwell’s is one of our favorites but disappointed they are not on Open Table anymore :(
The service is great and Jack is our favorite waiter.
Couldn’t get a reservation tonight.
So we requested a booth in the bar area. When we arrived a few minutes early we headed to the bar area to wait for our friends to arrive. One of the two booths in the bar had a "reserved" sign posted however there were people sitting there and it was obvious they were going to be there for sometime. The host staff had no answers as to why and ugly sweater boy was beyond rude. Needless to say we had to settle for a table upstairs. Hindsight we should have went somewhere else, wasn't the night we were looking forward to. We won't be back since reservation requests mean nothing.
Your restaurant's on-line menu clearly indicated that items could be made "gluten free" but that was not listed on the menu in the restaurant! When I asked the server, she was unsure. I have celiac disease so this was extremely important to me. She did check with the kitchen staff, but returned with only three options, which was a disappointment. I did have the pork chop though which was delicious and perfectly cooked so kudos to the chef! Just hoping the menu had been clearer with more options.
Cantwell’s has every possible ingredient to truly be the perfect dining experience. The most limiting factor being the attentiveness of the staff, which is hit/miss here. This could almost be the ultimate night out but for the “will our server disappear for 20 minutes at a time?” question.
Will definitely return, specifically avoiding their busier times. All else is postcard commendable.
I really enjoyed Cantwells - the building is beautiful and historic. We enjoyed all the historical documents on the walls. There was a fireplace going near our table which really added to the ambiance. It was decorated beautifully for Christmas. Food was excellent! I took one star off for service because our waitress, while very personable, did not share the specials with us. We only found out about them because the table behind us inquired. At that point we had already ordered. She also did not pick up on the fact that our drinks were empty while passing us by multiple times. Otherwise she was great. I would definitely recommend this spot, and I will be back again!
Cantwell's never disappoints. Even though my dinner companion cancelled while I was waiting I stayed and enjoyed my Popcorn Shrimp and Stuffed Chicken and two glasses of Riesling.
Burgers got mixed up but it worked out fine didn't realize until we bit into them.
We had a private room. Our part consisted of adults from age 26-88 and everyone was pleased.
Our food came quickly and was well prepared. The ambiance of this early-american historic was very nice. Our waitress must have been new as she wasn't able to answer some pretty basic questions about the menu. I would go there again.
My husband and I went there for Thanksgiving/birthday. It was a buffet with copious amounts of good food. It was a warm, comfortable environment with very good service in an historic building. We will definitely return.
Thanksgiving buffet was excellent. Other meals have also been great, including Sunday brunch. The warm 19th century decor is unique for this area and was perfect for Thanksgiving.
Overall the buffet was good but the desserts were disappointing. Expected homemade pies and got funky little tarts.
Food was good. Unfortunately the waiter forgot my soup. When my meal came, it was a little late to remind him of his oversight.
