Cantwell's Tavern Ratings and Reviews
We went for my husband's birthday. We were seated within five minutes for brunch. We sat right by the fireplace. (How cozy) It was a pleasant experience. The drinks were delicious. I think we will return, next time for dinner. My only complaint was the meat selection. No alternative for pork or beef.
We enjoy Cantwell's - we go often in the late afternoon as the place is quiet(er) . The food is good but the menu is limited and doesn't change as much as it should. The wait staff is largely young and pleasant; the reception area and staffing is probably the least attractive aspect of the Cantwell's experience as it is often abandoned or staffed by a young woman who has absolutely no clue about customer service (not rude, just 'unconscious').
Outstanding meals. Very creative. It was Tapas night and there were 4 items to chose from. My wife opted for pan seared scallops which would have been a good option for Tapas,. I had the pork tenderloin on sweet potatoe mashers and greens. Very well done.
Save room for desert. Ordered the French toast bread pudding. Fabulous.
Sat near the active fire place (gas vs wood logs). Nicely decorated for the holidays.
Enjoyable relaxing and fun experience. Atmosphere of small and mid-sized rooms in early 1900’s building. Menu has local items that are tasty and very well presented. Great place for a special occasion (for us New Years Eve), or a afternoon meal. Found the service friendly and helpful, yet not intrusive. We have been here several times over the last couple of years and always enjoyed the experience. Definitely would recommend...
This was my second time this month I went for brunch - that says something! Excellent food, excellent brunch menu options, good pricing and all 4 times I’ve been to Cantwell’s this month (2 brunch 2 dinner) Taylor was my server. She is a cheerful excellent waitress.
Only negative was tavern chair was uncomfortable for one of our friends who has orthopedic issues, as we sat n talked over dinner for several hours. But we do realize this is a colonial tavern so we should have thought of that before meeting this friend there... our problem, not the chair or restaurants.
Staff was very accommodating n never made us feel we should leave.
The building itself is beautiful and they do a great job with decor. The fireplaces in every room are delightful!! Our service was wonderful and our food, as always, was delicious. I will say unfortunately it seems recently to have trended under par of what it once was. Still a favorite, hope it changes direction back to what it was.
All 5 of us were very pleased with out brunch - everything was wonderful tasting and looked great. The cinnamon roll was big enough for us to split while we waited for our food. The french toast was cooked just right and my sisters poached eggs on top of crab cakes was fabulous. Can't wait to go back for brunch soon. WHY did I wait so long to try brunch there considering I love eating lunch and dinner at Cantwell's!
Table was set for 6 in a rather tight room. Would have liked a bigger room for our gathering. Waiter was friendly...at first but when bread was requested, the response was "We only serve bread for dinner." Then, he started to get an attitude. First, not the right response if you are trying to convey professional customer service. Second, why NOT serve bread at lunch? Your bread is delicious and from what I have heard, what most people enjoy! Overall, enjoyed the lunch - this was our second visit to the restaurant.
So we requested a booth in the bar area. When we arrived a few minutes early we headed to the bar area to wait for our friends to arrive. One of the two booths in the bar had a "reserved" sign posted however there were people sitting there and it was obvious they were going to be there for sometime. The host staff had no answers as to why and ugly sweater boy was beyond rude. Needless to say we had to settle for a table upstairs. Hindsight we should have went somewhere else, wasn't the night we were looking forward to. We won't be back since reservation requests mean nothing.
Your restaurant's on-line menu clearly indicated that items could be made "gluten free" but that was not listed on the menu in the restaurant! When I asked the server, she was unsure. I have celiac disease so this was extremely important to me. She did check with the kitchen staff, but returned with only three options, which was a disappointment. I did have the pork chop though which was delicious and perfectly cooked so kudos to the chef! Just hoping the menu had been clearer with more options.
Cantwell’s has every possible ingredient to truly be the perfect dining experience. The most limiting factor being the attentiveness of the staff, which is hit/miss here. This could almost be the ultimate night out but for the “will our server disappear for 20 minutes at a time?” question.
Will definitely return, specifically avoiding their busier times. All else is postcard commendable.
I really enjoyed Cantwells - the building is beautiful and historic. We enjoyed all the historical documents on the walls. There was a fireplace going near our table which really added to the ambiance. It was decorated beautifully for Christmas. Food was excellent! I took one star off for service because our waitress, while very personable, did not share the specials with us. We only found out about them because the table behind us inquired. At that point we had already ordered. She also did not pick up on the fact that our drinks were empty while passing us by multiple times. Otherwise she was great. I would definitely recommend this spot, and I will be back again!
We had a private room. Our part consisted of adults from age 26-88 and everyone was pleased.
Our food came quickly and was well prepared. The ambiance of this early-american historic was very nice. Our waitress must have been new as she wasn't able to answer some pretty basic questions about the menu. I would go there again.
Our appetizers were late. Meal came shortly after, so we felt overwhelmed with it all at one time. Breakfast burger was a burnt hockey puck. I always ask for my burger well done but it was not edible. The manager had another burger made for me but it was not much better. The staff was very apologetic and removed our appetizers and my burger from the bill. It was a shame because we usually love it there. There were four of us and everyone else's meal was fine.
We had a nice happy hour a week ago. We had friends come down from Westchester for Sunday Brunch. It was not good. The eggs benedict were almost hard boiled with a lack of amount of Hollanddaise sauce. Very little salmon. We were not asked up front if we were going to have coffee. We probably will not go back.
We visit Cantwell's twice a year at least to dine with a friend who lives about equidistant on the other side. We have made the place part of the tradition because the food is lovely and the atmosphere makes it possible for us to catch up with our friend in a comfortable, relaxed setting. Thank you Cantwell's.
