Cantwell's Tavern Ratings and Reviews
Our appetizers were late. Meal came shortly after, so we felt overwhelmed with it all at one time. Breakfast burger was a burnt hockey puck. I always ask for my burger well done but it was not edible. The manager had another burger made for me but it was not much better. The staff was very apologetic and removed our appetizers and my burger from the bill. It was a shame because we usually love it there. There were four of us and everyone else's meal was fine.
We had a nice happy hour a week ago. We had friends come down from Westchester for Sunday Brunch. It was not good. The eggs benedict were almost hard boiled with a lack of amount of Hollanddaise sauce. Very little salmon. We were not asked up front if we were going to have coffee. We probably will not go back.
We visit Cantwell's twice a year at least to dine with a friend who lives about equidistant on the other side. We have made the place part of the tradition because the food is lovely and the atmosphere makes it possible for us to catch up with our friend in a comfortable, relaxed setting. Thank you Cantwell's.
I wish we had been able to sit downstairs since it was a special occasion. There is more atmosphere down there. We had a long conversation with waitress about current events. Although we were basically in agreement, it went on too long. We were out to celebrate a birthday. Our reservation did state that it a special occasion.
Having been to Cantwell's for dinner and really enjoying it, I decided to take my mom there for a birthday brunch. It surpassed my expectations and while it wasn't a "traditional" brunch, the food was phenomenal. I got the Chesapeake Benedict and everything was delicious- just enough (real) crab meat, the perfect amount of hollandaise sauce, and while my mom didn't enjoy them (old bay isn't her thing) I found the hash browns with old bay seasoning the perfect compliment to the Chesapeake. Our waiter was super polite and easy to get a hold of when we needed something. Don't think I've ever had a bad experience here, other than not making a reservation and finding it packed around the holiday time! It's definitely worth a try if you're all about a cozy, historic venue.
Old high school friends and I chose to meet at Cantwell's for an annual get-together, as we live a few hours apart. All four of us loved the setting in an old tavern that has been beautifully restored. The taste and quality of the food was excellent, the variety of choices on the menu accommodated different preferences, and the service was also excellent. This is the third time I'e been at Cantwell's and have never been disappointed. I will definitely return.
The service was excellent. Our waitress could not have been more efficient, friendly and courteous. The food was prepared and presented well. It was my birthday and we had 3 grandkids with us, well behaved, I might add, and thy received special attention.
One of my "special occasion restaurants"
Making a reservation was a big help. The Cantwell's experience was very nice. The century old house was quite charming. The waiter was courteous and understanding. A request for a substitution for bread instead of a roll was no problem to the server as well as the kitchen. The cost for a mimosa with a shot of Grand Mainer was a little high. Will go back!!
We opted to sit outside since it was such a beautiful evening. Courtyard setting was quite and about 75% of the tables were full. Service got off to a slow start - I think there was a question as to which server would be taking our table.
I had a filet that was delicious and cooked as requested along with great well seasoned French Fries. Served with a tangy unusual tasting mustard along with ketchup. The asparagus served with the steak was great, seasoned with some sort of mild crunchy pepper like seasoning.
Scallops were enjoy by my companion All in all a good value well presented meal. Service by Diane (?) was excellent after a slight miscue at the beginning
We were meeting friends from Pennsylvania and chose Cantwell's because it was the halfway point, I have to say it was worth the 60 mile drive and would do it again just for dinner.
The atmosphere was perfect, the cocktails perfect, the food was perfect, the service was excellent. I had a dozen Crisfield Oysters from the raw bar and they were crisp and fresh. I would have liked them to be a bit brinier, but that is no reflection on the restaurant. For an Entree I had the filet and it was grilled to a perfect very rare, just as I had asked. The accompanying sides of mashed potatoes and asparagus, were the right compliment to my steak. My wife had a Caesar Salad with a Crabcake and she was very pleased. We will definitely make the trip up from Lewes to dine here again.
While traveling through the area had an overnight stop and found Cantwell's ad in the hotel information booklet. A quick online found great reviews so we made a reservation. There was outside seating with live music but we sat inside. Although it was very busy we were seated promptly. This is an old building with lots of charm. Our server was very busy but did her best to take care of us. The food was awesome, menu offered many options from sandwiches and salads to traditional entrees. Many excellent dessert choices, I had the bread pudding which was excellent. Prices were reasonable. We were very pleased to find Cantwell's!
We visited on a Saturday night and were seated on the patio. The restaurant was busy, but we were visited by our server promptly. Everything went smoothly and the musician playing on the patio was very entertaining. One less than satisfactory item was that the water glasses for the table were never re-fileed after the intial serving, fortunately it wasn't an exceedingly warm evening.
I was disappointed with the wait staff; Waiting an hour to be served appetizers is unacceptable.
The tavern was not crowded and the waiting time was unacceptable. there were small children who were getting hungry. An elderly lady in the party needed to use the elevator and was brushed off while a member of the wait staff was talking on her cell phone. Unacceptable.
Will not recommend this place to anyone else, and will not return at all.
Let me start by saying we love Cantwell's and overall, give it a high rating. But to be honest...
Do not order the steak sandwich. It used to be very thinly sliced steak, but on this past Sunday it was a grey "steak paste" with so much grease that the roll was a wet sponge. Unfortunately we ordered 2 at our table. Both came with cold French fries. We did not eat them and we were not even offered a free dessert or drink. A bad day in the kitchen at a usually wonderful restaurant.
We have been to Cantwell's numerous times and have never been disappointed. The food is excellent and reasonably priced and the beer selection plentiful. This was our second time dining outdoors in the courtyard. The music is good and not so loud that you can only talk in between sets. Servers are polite and the atmosphere is relaxing. Definitely worth the trip whether you dine outside or in. Historic setting is a plus.
We have dined here on multiple occasions. This time was to celebrate two birthdays. Unfortunately, the service was slow - from drinks to desert. And, for the first time, the food was a major disappointment. Three in the party of seven ordered prime rib, a Sunday night dinner special. When served, none of the portions met the temperature requests - one rare, two mid-rare. Moreover, the meat was tough and flavorless. In fact, two of the diners couldn't finish the meal because of of the toughness. The leftovers went home to the dog. Fries and asparagus were fine.
The server was nice but I suspect he had too many tables in some other part of the restaurant - or outside - because he did not return to address requests or other issues.
Given the experience, I don't think Cantwell's would be a choice for a future special occasion.
Server was attentive & knowledgeable. Building is historic & interesting. We had Sunday breakfast. All three of us were surprised at how small servings were ! My husband got quiche & it was not nearly enough to satisfy him-smallest slice of quiche I'veever seen. I had omelet & it was small also and dry as if it had been made earlier and warmed up for me. My granddaughter ordered French toast & got three tiny half slices with no syrup until she asked twice. Food really was not anything I'd go back for. I've had lunch here twice and don't recall servings bring inadequate. Eggs are cheap-wonder why they're so skimpy with amounts they give you ! I'll return but not for breakfast. There are not many nice choices in area to eat & at least Cantwell's building has charm.
I would recommend Cantwell's to anyone. This was my third visit in the last two months. I cannot believe that for all these years that I have just 19 miles away I never went before.
The deviled eggs are an especial favorite - not many places server them anyway. And with the touch of real bacon they truly are a special treat.
Just go and try it. You won't be sorry.
Joined friends who were celebrating their anniversary here for dinner and enjoyed a delicious meal in wonderfully old, historic building in the heart of Odessa. Our serve was great; she was attentive without being annoying and was quick to correct a mistake the bar made with one drink order. The starters were excellent and the steak choices my wife and I both had were decent. Dessert was another pleasant surprise - the banana cream pie was incredible! We will definitely go back and try other menu items!
