We were looking for a nicer restaurant close to the Castro Theatre for my husband's birthday dinner with friends before seeing a film, and Canela exceeded our expectations. We shared several tapas and paella, and the food was incredible. The sangria also was wonderful; the best I've had outside of Spain. The wine list also was outstanding, and we chose a lovely Garnacha that everyone enjoyed. Best of all, the service was out of this world. It is rare to find a restaurant with this kind of personalized attention and hospitality, but as soon as Paul saw we were Spanish food and drink aficionados, he did everything in his power to make it a special evening. I've already told other friends about what an overall terrific experience it was, and I cannot wait to return.
We enjoyed the tapas and dessert. Staff was very friendly. Upon hearing we were in Spain a few months ago for our honeymoon, we were presented with two glasses of bubbly with dessert.
My husband and I went here to celebrate my birthday and it was a delightful experience from the time we sat down to the time we left. The ambiance of the place is warm and welcoming and we had a table by the front window so it was not noisy. The wait staff were all knowledgable and helped us with in our selections. We enjoyed a variety of small dishes paired with two lovely spanish wines. They paced things out for us so the dishes didn't come too quickly and we could savor the different flavors. We plan to go back with friends to share this experience!
I've been here twice, and I don't think I'll return. There are better spanish/tapas restaurants that I've been to in SF. The food is mediocre and a few of our dishes were served cold. The salad was tiny. The service wasn't great either. Overall, the value isn't there.
Outstanding meal. Elevated tapas. Wonderful service and ambience. Good Spanish wine list. Owner came out to ask how we were doing. Will definitely return!!
Great food with pairing of wines very well selected. The service was impeccable, attentive and discrete. We will get back
Truly terrible take on Spanish food. Everything was overly fried and greasy and the service was slow.
Tasty food and friendly service is what we received at Canela. If you like Spanish tapas Canela will meet and most likely exceed your expectation.
Great food; friendly staff; and wonderful atmosphere!
Wonderful service, delicious food. Made us feel special. Will definitely come back!
La más parecido a la cocina española que he probado por el mundo. Muy recomendado.
Food ok. Asparagus fried in oil that seemed pretty old. Interior pretty beat up and unpleasant. Not in a hurry to go back.
Excellent food and kind staff but quite loud.
Fabulous food, great wine and top service
Did not have reservation in their system but seated us anyway.
Wonderful food and always a great experience
This was my third, and it will be my last meal at Canela Bistro & Wine Bar. Over the years, the food and the service have deteriorated. The menu selection is limited, the wine selection is limited, and the wait staff are limited. My meal was served only warm, not hot, my coffee was served before my dessert and the coffee was only warm, not hot. Everything moved very slowly and the service was not organized. In San Francisco there are many restaurants to choose from (many in the same neighborhood), which provide comparable meals at very competitive prices, and with service which is much better than the service I received at Canela Bistro & Wine Bar
My girlfriend and I spent a great weekend in San Francisco, with dinner the last night here at Canela. The wine was good, the tapas and paella tasty, and the service excellent. I definitely recommend it.
Excellent food, each dish absolutely delicious. Excellent service, our server was very knowledgable and made excellent recommendations. All of the dishes are available in two sizes for sharing the tapas size and the raciones, double portion for larger group, a little discount rather than buying two orders of the tapas. I plan to return soon for another excellent meal.
We've been here twice and both times the food was outstanding. Great smallish plates for sharing, with lots of flavor that paired well with the selection of Spanish wines available. Service was attentive but not hovering. Atmosphere is cozy and welcoming.
Great tapas menu! Every dish was delicious and the waiter was willing to recommend at every step. Had a wondurful meal.
Canela’s food is consistently to perfection, no matter what we order, and reasonably priced. The chef always comes out to ask us how we enjoyed our meal. Service is attentive and friendly, though pace is somewhat laid back, so go when you want to enjoy a nice date or a good visit with friends over a bottle of wine, not when you need to rush to the show. Every meal we have had there has made us want to come back.
Service was great. Waitstaff was very attentive and helpful.
Unfortunately, we did the fixed menu /pairings for Valentine’s day and was pretty disappointed by the food and wine.
Consistently delicious and varied. The pear, almond gaspavho was amaxing. Helpful, regular folks
Excellent venue and very friendly. Food was amazing!!
We enjoyed the tapas we ordered at La Canela. Our perfect kind of meal. This was our favorite style of meal in Spain. I have to say, though, that is really really loud. You can talk if you look at each other. With that said, I would highly recommend it for dinner.
Food was pricey and average. Good as there aren’t many tapas areas in the hood. Staff wasn’t friendly which was surprising cause it was dead so they didn’t seem busy.
Excellent food all beautifully prepared with really great service.
Great oxtail and the atmosphere is super smooth
Love this place with all my heart. The food is great and the friendly staff makes for an awesome experience.
Went here for restaurant week. The deals were good. Our waitress was M.I.A. for a good portion. Took her almost 20 min to take our order. She wasn't the most friendly either, just ok. She did know her food though. The potatas braves were good, flat bread was a poor version of flatbread pizza. The clams were excellent. Stuffed peppers had a meat mixture that was a bit off putting. I couldn't finish it. The shrimp were slightly overcooked but the sauce was awesome, especially dipped in bread. Wine was very good.
We had an amazing meal, and Chef Mat stopped by our table personally to check in. The service was absolutely stellar, including nuanced wine suggestions. Really could not have had a better experience.
We had a fabulous meal during restaurant week...4 courses with wine pairings. Everything was wonderful! Our only complaint was that it was noisy, but food and service were exceptional!
Everything was good until the fire nation... um i meant burnt steak attacked.
Delicious! Went for Restaurant week and received great food and value.
Service was amazing and the food was delicious.
Flew in from HNL to enjoy SF Restaurant Week dining and am a new Canela fan!
The SFRW menu was great and the wine pairings spot on. My wife and I enjoyed this very much.
