Second time to this place and they always satisfy me. The Risotto with seafood is seasoned balanced. The chef surely knows how to cook a salt-crusted seabass--the fish is seasoned well and so are the veggies. Though the grilled polenta is lightly dry and burnt; and the edge of the fish is too salty due to the salt that is not cleaned up. The dessert trio is also one of the best ones in OC.
The restaurant is gorgeous, you get a super authentic Italian feel. The servers are very professional, helpful, kind and funny. The food is authentic and very tasty. Felt like I was actually in Italy for a second, definitely recommend this place to anyone!
I’m a frequent customer, but won’t be any more. Our sever was the worst server I have had in a long time. Just completely clueless about her role and approach. Food was not good either...just a very disappointing experience all around. I won’t be back...too many other great dining options in Orange County
I made a reservation for Valentine’s Day and requested a good table with side by side seating. If unable to accommodate that request somewhere cozy or patio or fireplace. I also inquired upon the dessert special they featured with initials in the cake.
When we arrived, they seated us right by the hostess stand, where carts were bumping my dates chair and without any room to relax. We even escalated a request to move to any other table and would wait... they refused.
When we were seated, we were asked what we wanted to drink. The drinks took way too long and when she arrived with them we ordered our food.
The food took a very long time as well, we had to continually ask for more olive oil and balsamic for our bread, they never cleared the table of plates or drinks, we were never asked if we wanted another drink or were ever checked on once our meals arrived.
Finally we asked for the check to just get out of there.
Needless to say, we won’t be going back.
The food was also mediocre and much better once reheated and doctored at home.
Second time here, food was again very very good. The bread is fantastic and the deserts are not from this world.
I will be back.
Service was impeccable.
On Valentine’s Day night we were seated in a patio area with very poor lighting. The atmosphere was more of a dark warehouse and not a romantic setting for Valentine’s Day. I asked for a candle and was told they had none.
In addition, my girlfriend has some severe allergies and the waiter told her the chef would make no accommodations for her because they were so busy. If that was true, then we should have been informed of that when we made our reservation. Not customer friendly at all.
We have dined at this restaurant many times before without any complaints. Valentine’s night was a disaster.
My wife and I had a Valentine’s dinner. We were seated outside which actually made the noise level minimal and easier to hear each other. The food was great (as usual) and the service was very good minus one gaffe. Our server forgot to put in our appetizer order but accommodations were made immediately when the error was discovered. A very nice experience all around.
Tables too tight together as every time waiter or busboy tried to serve adjacent table, the either bumped into outer table or had to lean over it,
The waiter was very good! He was very friendly and personable and mad
We had the chicken asparagus risotto and it was outstanding! The price was really expensive but the food was very good.
Sad to say, this Valentine’s Day experience was not good. We arrived on time for our reservation and were seated in what was clearly an annex of some sort, set up just for the evening. It was a small square room with no ambiance at all, crammed full of small tables with folding chairs. The round table was so small the food and drinks barely fit. It did not set us up to enjoy the meal. Even the food was a bit disappointing as it was under seasoned. I don’t think the beef carpaccio, the grilled salmon, or the otherwise excellent roasted potatoes had been salted at all, and there was no salt on the table. Salt was brought promptly upon request, though. That brings me to the one bright spot - the service. Our waiter was great. This was not my first trip to Canaletto and it may not be my last. But I will definitely not be back on a holiday if any sort.
Entrees took 45 minutes to come out after appetizers..then one entree came out cold. Manager didn’t even come and discuss...will never return.
Canaletto is one of our favorite restaurants. The food is amazing and the staff is always friendly and attentive. Every dish we have tried is excellent. My husband loves the oysters, and you have to try the octopus appetizer. The chocolate cake melted in my mouth. SOO GOOD. Can't wait to go back. Canaletto is a fun place to go for a date or a big gathering with friends and family.
We met friends there after a lecture at the Newport Library. We were in the small room with a fireplace. We have had the same waiter several times...a nice Italian gentleman who provided excellent service.
Delicious Italian food, attentive staff without hovering, nice wine selection. Just a good time in all ways.
The food was great the place is cute but the service was below average that night.
Excellent , excellent , excellent !
We had a delicious octopus/potato appetizer & they made us a grilled calamari app rather than the lighttly breaded & fried. They have a
fine wine list with many moderately priced choices & a most lovely dining room in addition to outside tables.
Our waiter was friendly & knowledgeable.
Overall quite good. The octopus appetizer was 5 stars. The fish soup had excellent, fresh ingredients but was bland.
Really a gem. Food is great. Service is great and the location is great. What else one can ask.
I will be back. Great dinner. The bread alone is fantastic.
Everything we order was very good.
Excellent in all respects
A friend and I had dinner before a movie. Canaletto is one of my favorite restaurants and their risotto is very good but rich. My date had the sole special which was deboned at the table very elegantly. The waiter was energetic and extremely competent.
The restaurant is located in Fashion Island so of course upscale ambience. We tried this restaurant because of restaurant week which is always a good time to try new places. Service was outstanding however I do have to say food was just so-so. Pasta, over cooked and drowned in sauce when my friend asked for light sauce. The dessert we selected, cannelloni, was not a hit with any of us. Have been to many Restaurant week places and would not recommend, sorry...
Absolutely delicious. Loved the warm octopus and potato salad. Also had the roasted pear ravioli and that was fantastic!
The Food and Service are great. Never disappointed. We go at least every month and sometimes more..... A Must Try!!
I like it because it’s dog friendly and the service is great.
Great spot for business meetings or fun. Moderate sound level and the servers are just wonderful. Always on top of their game.
A bit pricy for small portions, although the food was good. Ordered and appetizer which came out within minutes of them bringing our meals. I Informed the hostess ahead of time that we were celebrating my daughter’s birthday...she said she would take care of it... they did nothing, yet we heard the staff singing Happy Birthday to other patrons. Overall Disappointed in our family visit to Canaletto’s.
You'll know the place by the obnoxiously exotic and expensive vehicles parked in front. I tell myself this is strictly publicity, God I hope the food isn't like the curbside show. It wasn't. The service was good, the place is lovely, gorgeous open kitchen. The food was delicious! We will most definitely go back!
