A little bit about Canal House… Melissa Hamilton and Christopher Hirsheimer are cooks who write about home cooking. In 2007 they founded Canal House, which includes a publishing venture and a culinary, photography, and design studio. Their cookbook Canal House Cooks Every Day received a James Beard Award, and their blog, Canal House Cooks Lunch, is followed by thousands of readers who find inspiration in what they cook up each day.
Canal House Station Café & Restaurant, their latest endeavor, makes the food that fills the pages of their cookbooks come to life for everybody to enjoy!
We had a lovely experience from the drive into Milford , to the ambiance, the decor , the food and service. What a revelation. Thank you so much!
We were very impressed! It was a set 4 course menu for an early evening dinner that turned out to be exceptional. Outstanding was the 1st course, a pasta with favs beans, peas & artichokes that set the course for the rest of the meal. They even impressed me with the cappuccino that I order with an extra shot that was exactly to my taste!
We celebrated a birthday dinner with price fixe. The food was delicious and innovative. We all had a lovely time.
We enjoyed a late Sunday lunch with a set menu (you may want to check out before you go, what they offer that day).
The Radiccio salad was beautifully presented and the dressing was really delicious, subtle, not overpowering.
The main course was a slow cooked short rib, really juicy and tender and the parsnip puree was delicious, of a creamy consistency and had a nice sweetness, as they had added a touch of cider.
Overall the ambiance was casual, cozy and if you get a chance, try to get a table in the open kitchen room, which this time of the year was heated by a great wood fired stove, creating an wonderful ambiance...
Always beyond belief; it is so good in every respect.

I had another incredible breakfast at Canal House Station. I love the artistic touches in this space. The colorful aprons hung on the wall, the lighting and the beautiful flowers. The service is wonderful and the food is made with such card. I had the omelet which is an incredible masterpiece and the toast and butter and jam in the best. Come and enjoy a wonderful time.
Wonderful Sunday dinner! It’s a set menu that changes weekly. We had a minestrone soup, salad, perfectly roasted chicken, and chocolate tarts that were to die for. I can’t wait to go back!
Delicious food impeccably prepared and served with friendly panache. Truly, this place is an outstanding dining experience. And the price it right. I have been recommending them to everyone and plan to come back many times.

Saturday morning is pancake time, all you can eat and they are the best pancakes I ever had.
So very nice! The hostess was warm friendly and inviting. Nash and Kari were the best. Explained each course in detail; how it was prepared and what to expect from a taste profile. Both were very attentive and caring to our needs. Wow! The food, oh the food! Each course was unique, sophiticated, and well layered from a taste profile. Each course complimented the previous which ended with climatic delight savoring a delightful almond cake complimented by a great espresso...still in heaven a week later...thank you all from the fine dining Foodies of the world!!!
The place is gorgeous! The food is gorgeous. The atmosphere is so comfortable and relaxing. Don’t go there for a quick bite. Enjoy the slower pace (not in a bad way) and eating ‘experience’. Lunch was so delicious. I’ll plan my next visit as soon as possible. Plan ahead! The place is booked well in advance.
The menu may be limited (and rightfully so) but the food is prepared superbly. I have not tasted food this well prepared outside of France.
The best dining experience we have had in a long time! I have wanted to go here since they opened but never go around to it. Oh, the delicious meals we have missed!
Everything was perfect and both of us have very exacting standards.
The atmosphere is so special. Old train station meets urban chic. Quiet buzz of conversation. Great music played at a perfect volume.
The food is special. Think of the culinary arts school restaurants or Ottolenghi. Perfectly prepared food paired to tickle your taste buds and presented in an unpretentious fashion.
Service. Attentive but not cloying. Quiet and professional. No sense of being rushed to turn a table over.
I cannot wait to go back and even purchased their newest cookbook to see if I can whip something up that even faintly resembles the delicious meal we had there. Thank you for a memorable meal.

Had breakfast and now need
Incredibly delicious, well prepared, presented food.
Wwe were there for breakfast. I ordered the Japanese Breakfast and my partner, the Blini with eggs and salmon roe. Both were beautiful to look at and tasted absolutely delicious. In my dish the tuna was cooked perfectly and the contrasting textures and tastes of the rice and pickles provided just the right balance of salty,sweet and sour. The eggs were creamy, the blinis earthy and the pop of the salmon roe made for party in the mouth.
The service was prompt, efficient and friendly; attentive without being intrusive.
We'll be back.

Wonderful place - excellent ambience, great attentive staff, loved walking in and seeing the chefs at work and having an opportunity to interact with them. Food was good - special Mexican menu from a visiting friend of the chefs’ from Mexico. My only complaint is that I would have liked to have known about the special menu before coming since there is only one choice. I am not sure if that would have impacted our decision to come, but it still would have been nice to know. If it was available on the web site, it is very hard to find. They certainly did not let us know in the restaurant confirmation. I love the idea that they make things based on the freshest stuff available, but I would think that they could confirm the menu a few days out. On the web site, it is very difficult to use. It is pretty but confusing - hard to get to the restaurant related stuff. Loved going here anyway and will return many times in the future.
3rd visit. First was for the prix fixe Sunday dinner and the other two were for breakfast. The breakfast menu is quite limited - three varieties of omelette and a stack of pancakes were the most recent offerings. But they’re very good. I’ve loved everything I’ve tried. Service is a bit slow but it’s a nice place to hang out and chat with friends.
My husband and I had Sunday dinner and very much enjoyed the 4-course meal. There are not any food options; but it included 2 starters, the main, and a very yummy dessert. The portions were good size. The food was excellent throughout, as many other diners have noted. If you plan to bring your own wine, I recommend you call ahead to find out what is included on the menu that day so you can bring an appropriate wine (the menu on their website is not necessarily for that day). Overall, it was a very enjoyable dining experience. We will be going back with friends.
Not even a tiny possibility of improvement! Each of the 5 Sunday dinner courses was not only a work of eye-pleasing art but so elegantly sumptuous that our experience can only be described a “life event.”
Are my words “over the top?” You bet they are!
Even the timing of the courses was perfect, allowing time for the previous course to settle while we could engage in conversation.
If you are fortunate to obtain reservations, take the time to enjoy it all - ambience, service, and food.

We had both a Saturday breakfast and Sunday supper and we loved every moment and every bite. How did they know exactly what we were dying to eat? How did they know we did want the extra pancakes they offered? Who chose the perfectly perfect silverware, the thinnest crystal glasses, the cavorting farm animal wallpaper? Canal House Station is hand mixed: casual and chic; sophistication in the country; simple pleasures and tastes that come from leaving it alone; knowing when to add a spice or a dollop or a handful shiny red caviar balls. It is the kindness of knowing that yes, you would love 2 more pancakes, on the house! Leaving this restaurant left me so happy - thanks to everyone who created this very delicious, very special place.

Came at the end of breakfast so we sampled lighter fare off the breakfast menu, broth with tiny pasta and some bread and jam then took a little break and had lunch! The omelette was outstanding as was the porchetta with gremolata served over polenta. The pâté was delicious. There was no rush and we had a simply wonderful time. We will be back!
We are big fans of the Canal House cookbooks not to mention Melissa and Christopher. We were not disappointed. Once inside the beautifully renovated train station we were welcomed into an open kitchen bathed in sunlight. The meal was simple and delicious. Homemade turkey and rice soup followed by a salad of the freshest lettuce topped with crunchy croutons and 2 perfectly poached eggs. Divine!
The Canal House Station - it really is heaven. Food is fantastic. People are lovely. Feels like home.
The best pancakes in the world, really. Like what all other pancakes are hoping to be when they grow up. We've been to breakfast/lunch here a few times before, but this was our second time going specifically for the pancakes. We brought our college-aged kids and their friends so that they would know what a perfect pancake is. Love the ambiance and friendly service as well! We'll be back, often. Not just have to make it to one of their Sunday Suppers...

Sunday dinner was so delicious and a great way to spend the afternoon lingering over multiple small courses. Highly recommended!
The food and service people were amazing but the food took too long between courses. We were there almost 2 1/2 hours. That’s too long for lunch. That being said, we will definitely go back.
