About Camino

After working at Chez Panisse for over 20 years, Russell Moore opened this warm and rustic restaurant in the Grand Lake area of Oakland. Inspired by traditional home cooking in France, Italy and Spain most of the dishes served at the restaurant are cooked at the restaurant’s prominent fireplace or wood burning oven. A small, decisive, daily changing menu reflects the seasons, the region and the restaurant’s commitment to small farms. Camino offers a specialized cocktail menu using the same carefully sourced ingredients as the kitchen.

We've eaten at Camino many times. The food is excellent and the restaurant is very attractive. The only criticism I have is that if you order a cocktail, it takes a really long time for it to be served. The restaurant wasn't crowded at all and yet we waited about 20 minutes for our cocktails after ordering them - there are other times where we've waited 30 minutes for them. The cocktails showed up at about the same time as our first course. It happens every time we eat there. It's not a big deal. The food is always really good and the restaurant is very attractive.

I brought a friend here for his birthday and were given a quiet table as requested, so conversation was easy. The half crab was really flavorful and I had the trumpet mushroom packet, which was divine, and enough to take some home for breakfast. Our dessert arrived with a candle, as also requested when I made my Open Table reservation. It was a perfect, low key, delicious celebration. Thanks to the great wait staff for pitch perfect service.

I liked this place. I liked the menu options. The vegetarian main course was fantastic. The chicken was a little dry but good. The hostes was not very welcoming, my husband and I were all giggly enjoying our date night, to find this very serious person at the reception. The waitress was great though. Fun to order the half crab. But I think those will be only as the season lasts. Great new cocktails and house made sodas.

The food was sub par and way too expensive for what we got. We were definitely disappointed in our experience.

Thoroughly disappointing meal for New Year’s Eve. Except for our beef, every course was bland and lukewarm. We were all underwhelmed. Our dinner was over $700 for four. It felt like a rip-off! This restaurant should and could be SO much better...good ingredients...good ambiance, but the food is just not flavorful enough. At those prices, every bite should be an “ah ha” moment. Hey, guys, up your game!

I still like this place quite a bit. Don't think the execution for NYE pre-fixe was great. But the staff was nice despite being slammed. Cocktails were tasty.

My husband and I have made Camino a holiday-season stop for a couple of years now. The restaurant was charmingly decorated for the season. Our meals (and cocktails) have been lovingly and excellently prepared and presented. We each had the oyster appetizer and the duck breast entree on a recent visit and were delighted with our choices. The duck breast in particular was delicious. High marks for inventive food, beautifully executed.

It's $200 for two people to enjoy a cocktail, share a moderately priced bottle from the well-chosen list, and each order a starter and a main but no dessert. Which is a lot for me, so I don't do it often, and am careful when I do. I know Camino will always have something I want to eat, even on a compact menu with just three mains and an small array of starters and sides. The fact that almost every dish has one or more components grilled on an open fire is a signature of the place, and it's anything but gratuitous: This is grilling on a level that Weber can't even conceive of. Though the setting is not, I imagine, to everyone's taste (are you okay sitting at refectory tables at these prices?), it's perfect for this yupscale swath of Oaktown. The welcome is hospitable, the bartenders expert, the servers attentive and well-informed. Finally, while menu prices are indeed high, they include service (i.e. no tipping required) and also conform with local living-wage standards.

We love the food. But the noise level is horrible. You end up shouting at the person across the table from you when the restaurant is reasonably full😩

Quiet Sunday night at Camino. As is often the case on a cold evening, the restaurant is cooler than we like - needed my sweater. Citrus and daikon salad was sharp- flavored and interesting; Chicory salad was good. Mushrooms with greens was delicious, but very light for an entree. Wines by the glass: outstanding Muscadet, excellent Reisling, good Rhône and Langoudec.

Interesting menu - not your run of the mill items or pairings. Food was quite tasty and looked great as presented. Not wonderful for quiet conversations, but fine for casual conversations.

Went here for a birthday, and we enjoyed the food and ambiance. It was nice that the tip was included. The portions were small (given the price), which I think is the main complaint with this place. The service was okay. Our water jar was empty for a while until it was filled again. And getting the attention of a waiter was somewhat tough--especially because it was a slow night. I'm not sure how the service would've been compromised had it been a busier night. We had the crab, oysters, and squid. The squid was the highlight, and the crab was very well done (subtle yet flavorful). Everything was fresh.

Cocktails, while also very small in size, were more on the expensive side. I would recommend this place for a special occasion. It seems from the reviews (on here and other sites), that this place is a hit or miss. For us, we enjoyed ourselves and the food!

We had an overall disappointing dining experience. Mussels tasted fishy. Other dishes were fair at best. Beef ragu was the only dish that we would rate as excellent. Would not return.

Portion size small for price. Corkage is $25. This is Big City pricing for Oakland. Monday night Dungeness crab night made the limited menu even more limited.

Waiters were quite dour and downright unfriendly. Food was way overpriced. Nice decor, but w the crabby waitstaff and so so food - i suggest you go elsewhere for a date. At least to a place where there is some enthusiasm about what’s happening inside the kitchen. Will not be returning any time soon

I was expecting a more rustic presentation of meats cooked on an impressive open fire. What we received were beautifully composed plates and a smartly crafted and diverse use of flavors and textures that exceeded expectations. Camino has been on my radar for some time, but living in Marin, it took me a while to get there. I was right to insure the trek was made. I loved the space, the cacophony was energetic, but not loud — overall, an exceptional dining experience.

Love the food and ambiance. I have dined several times before and often have the same disappointment with the service. While the service staff is always friendly when at the table, getting them there requires arm waving. I can't help but think the all inclusive tip policy (which I actually like) might be impacting the quality of service. I recommend the restaurant, but arrive knowing you may have inattentive, but friendly service, and exceptional food.

This was only my second time dinning at Camino. The first time was shortly they opened. It won't be so long before o come back to dine again. Our whole experience last week was great! My husband and I both ordered the three course dinner and it was amazing! Crab broth soup with lots of veggies. Second course was Dungeness Crab roatsed over the fire! The crab was amazing!

Three of us enjoyed our meal there. The first course, grilled oysters, was very good. The butter lettuce salad was minimalist:lettuce with an excellent citrus vinaigrette. Entrees:squid or pork leg with pork sausage, also very good, though the potato that came with the squid was boring and felt unnecessary. Desserts were outstanding, the best part of the meal.Tunisian orange cake with dates and yogurt, gingerbread cake with poached quince and whipped cream, apple tart with ice cream and salted caramel sauce. All super! Negatives: slow service(maybe a function of open fire cooking) and lukewarm coffee at the end. Note that the service was gracious and professional but our dinner lasted 3 hours.

I go up and down with Camino. It's great, it's not, it's good, it's great, it's not. This was an it's not, and I'm not going to go into all the aspects that made this a bad eating out experience.

But suffice it to say our server managed to bungle our order, enough that we ate out of turn. Oh, and the ginger cake had some very suspicious fibers in it (think, brush?) that no one adequately explained. Finally, maybe for reals, I'm not going back again.

Food remains outstanding. Restaurant policy now is no tipping, they pay a living wage. This is a great concept if staff understands that service is still important. Our waitress was there a week and it showed in her either being confused and or inattentive. Had to get bartender to explain wine list. Other wait people looked either very competent and others striking less so. We are annual or semi annual diners there. Let’s see if the can pull the non incentive service idea off. Food was delicious.

Outstanding rustic but sophisticated food and cocktails in a beautiful setting. Service was friendly but slow but meal was worth the wait. Grilled squid was savory and tender and perfectly seasoned, desserts were also excellent. Among my favorite restaurants in Oakland and would easily bring people from all over the world to showcase fantastic California cuisine

Wonderful meal, the hearth oven is incredible and all food was well thought out and well executed. Overall I will definitely be back.

Such good interesting and fresh food! Everyone on staff seems to take ownership and seeks to make you feel part of the fam. Love their casualness, but I do think it could be a bit pricey even though they mention they include the tip in the bill - Love it recommend it but would definitely spend more $$ if it was a bit less costly:)
