Introducing the Camellia Room, formerly the Drake Bros.' restaurant, serving breakfast daily and available for private events. The dining room overlooking The Magnificent Mile and the Lakefront has been restyled by Diane Rostenkowski with Concept Group Interiors, taking inspiration from The Camellia House, which was the hotel's internationally renowned floral designed dining room circa 1940. The refresh maintains the historic integrity of the room's architecture, while exuding a contemporary look and feel. The dining room is adorned with trellis patterned wallcovering, crystal beaded chandeliers and wall sconces, decorative marble tile floor, ornate window treatments with beaded valance and tie backs, and an elegant floral lattice patterned carpet with a color palette of deep blues and golds, all complimenting the hotel's historic interiors and the city's landscape.

Sunday brunch was way over priced for what what was offered. The redecorating that took place recently was not at all attractive. I was a big fan of the traditional old Drake Bros restaurant. The service staff was inattentive . Food quality was fine but nothing great. For $28 per person for brunch I would rather go to Pinstripes or Grand Luxe. The charming old ambiance of the original Drake Brothers Restaurant is gone. Even the doorman at the hotel told me I was about the 100th person that has told him that.
Decided to try Drake Brothers for Christmas dinner this year with a group of six family members including our 5 year old daughter. Our service was great, we appreciate the attention from our server. The food however was not. We understood that there was a preset meal for $89 per person plus tax and tip with meat/fish/veggie option but the fish option (Halibut) was overcooked and had to be sent back to the kitchen. For the children's meal we chose the chicken option with broccoli and mac & cheese. The chicken was hard and equally overcooked and the mac and cheese had to be kraft mac and cheese. My daughter gladly ate the brocoli in anticipation of dessert. The menu stated a few dessert options but we were steered toward the candy shop dessert bar...so the chocolate cake and ice cream my daughter was hoping for didn't happen. However-she was quite pleased with the gummie worms. Nice atmosphere with the carolers, who received at least $40 in tips from my table for two song selections. They were very nice and accommodating to us. All in all, it was Christmas and we were just happy to be together. Next year- I will cook.
What has happened to this place? The Christmas meal this year was awful consisting of one slice of fatty beef and half a potato and half a sweet potato. The hotel did what it should do in this situation and did not charge us for the meal.
We have been four times, the last being 2011 when it was an absolutely fantastic 6 course meal and value for money and a highlight of our Christmas in Chicago. What has happened since then I do not know but the management has ruined it.
Will not return, based on this experience I don't think it will be in business to return to anyway, as knowbody would return given the quality of the the food. The chef and management should be ashamed.
It may have been due to the fact that it was Thanksgiving morning, but the service was very slow, albeit friendly. The buffet was lacking in so many items; there were no eggs and it said on the menu eggs could be made to order but no one asked. It just seemed like a sad little restaurant, a bit out of date.
The food and service are very good. The view looking out over Lake Shore Drive is special. It is awesome being in such an historic building. There are a few items that point to a bit of a tired dining room (such as the worn down carpet), but overall a great place to have brunch for a special occasion. We celebrated our anniversary with brunch there.
Few locations in Chicago have more quality and better views that Drake Bros. As you eat you overlook Oak Street Beach and North Michigan Avenue. You are in a quintessential Chicago location with grace and elegance.
I had the lobster roll with the homemade chips. The portion was very generous and full of seafood. My companion had a salmon entree that she declared delicious. The wait staff is most attentive.
Other than for the holidays, some people overlook this restaruant because it is tucked away in the northwest corner of the hotel. It is their loss as this is a gem.
Drake Bros. has a cool ambiance and views. It was perfect for a business breakfast. Hostess was friendly...wait staff was efficient and pleasant. While we didn't order anything unique (just bacon and eggs), both our dishes came with turkey bacon. When we mentioned that the waiter said, "Oh I thought you ordered turkey bacon." Maybe he could have mistaken that for one of us, but not both. By the time we realized it wasn't the real stuff, we had both taken bites of it. The presentation was nice...the fresh fruit was tasty (not bland like it can be in Chicago winter time.) Our waiter comped our coffees to make up for it, but we just missed the real bacon.
There were 7 of us on a Sunday for Brunch. Made the reservations for 1. I called the day before to see if we could move the reservation to 1:30 but there was no answer.so. I got a call at 7:56 a.m. the next day from the hostess telling me that we needed to be there at 1:00 because that was the last seating. She was rather abrupt with me and I was a little taken aback by that and by the fact that I was called so early on a Sunday morning.
I told her there was nothing indicated on Open Table or on the restaurant site that said that reservations had to be made at 1:00, the latest. She agreed that something had to be done about that.
The buffet was average in selection, weak on desserts..but overall, ok. The staff was nice and accommodating.
We had a nice time visiting, as it was quiet and we could talk. However, we expected more. For the money, and for the fact that this is the Drake Hotel, our expectations were not met.
I know it's just a breakfast/lunch restaurant but the Drake should have standards that are higher than the average dining establishment. Its reputation has been built on that concept.
We stay with our extended family every year at the Drake during the Holidays. This year, for the first time, a couple of us celebrated my sister's birthday with lunch at The Drake Bros. The hostess and staff were lovely and super accomodating, but in the end the service was very slow - even though it was not crowded, and the food was awful! I am not particular, but none of us finished our meals as they were that bad. $188.00 for an outstanding lunch for 4 people ( no alcohol) would be bad enough - but when the food was that horrible, $188 was a painful check to pay. Very dissapointed.
For a good many years we have enjoyed breakfast at the Drake. And while our recent visit was most enjoyable and the service and food quite good...it sure wasn't the Drake of old. Seems the Hilton folks have become economy minded - not price wise, however. The morning buffet did not seem to us to be that plentiful a selection, as in the past, for the $27/pp tab. And, the eggs Benedict did lot live up to previous tasty standards ... subjective, we realize. But it's probably not fair to compare the old Drake to the Hilton version...although they do trade on the old reputation.
It was Christmas, so our experience maybe outside the norm. Some dishes were exceptional (lobster bisque, prime rib and sides). Others were underwhelming (waldorf salad prepared as a scoop of chicken salad on a leaf of butter lettuce, with some of the listed ingredients and a number of substitutions?), and extremely dissapointing desserts (cake pops with unbaked cake dough dipped in coating).
Service was below par throughout the meal: received bread basket yet no bread plates or utensils. When we asked for bread plates, server pointed to the bread. Received coffee and dessert, again with request needed and prolonged wait for utensils and cream. Must give a nod to the table attendant/ bus staff- who consistently helped to get what we needed when server did not respond. And although it was Christmas, service glitches did not appear to be crowd-related, as plenty of tables were empty- at most, the room was half full.
We did expect impeccable service -to standard of the Drake- perhaps we expected too much. I would try again for a routine meal, but would think twice about returning for a special occasion. It didn't feel special.
All food was luke warm and the halibut was overcooked and dry. The manager suggested reheating it and putting olive oil or lemon on it. This was our Christmas dinner and had a set price of $89.00. Nothing about the dinner met the standards of the Drake. I would always stay at the hotel but will not return for a holiday meal.
Overall I was very disappointed in my experience. To start there were no decorations on the tables. Come on - it's Christmas. Even an artificial poinsettia or a votive candle would have added a little ambiance.
There were two tables next to us that had not been cleared. After staring at them for almost an hour we asked a busboy to clear them.
The soup and salad were good. I ordered prime rib. It came with two types of "twice baked" potatoes. They were not twice baked. As a matter of fact, they were under baked. And they were cold. The prime rib was a thin slab with lots of fat. It looked like something a cheap dinner would serve.
Our server was good and attentive and his timing was also good.
The dinner cost $89. 00. Definitely over priced. I was expecting much more and left very disappointed.
The food was excellent. The service a little slow but expected due to the busy traffic. Unfortunately there was poor communication from the manager to the tables that you had to go see Santa immediately because he was leaving. We waited in line with two other families and Santa just got up and left. I told complained to the photographer and she did nothing, I complained to a server that said she didn't know what was going on. I went to the front desk and complained and was told that the manager was going to call me. Two days later I complained again and heard nothing. The day I left I complained to the front desk two more times and finally the dining room manager, Eric phoned me and was extremely rude, argumentative and sarcastic, called me a liar, etc. He finally said "what do you want me to do" and I said , you are the manager, whom never got back with me, what should you do? He credited my bill 20% but still, NO PHOTOS WITH SANTA.
We have enjoyed brunches at the Drake over the many years past, but have not returned until recently. The buffet was more meager than it used to be, and the prices up. The hostess initial reaction to our request for a table with view was dismissive although there was availability and her colleague was kind enought to oblige. We ordered a la carte, some basic entrees. The check was more appropriate for a top steakhouse dinner almost, than one for 2 eggs, bacon and coffee. So yes, we enjoyed our meal, but it's not really worth the money.
I love breakfast at Drake Brothers. Whether you want to linger over a reasonably priced buffet or limit yourself to fresh fruit and a pastry, you will find delicious food with a view of Oak Street Beach and the Gold Coast. From the moment of entry forward, you are treated as a special guest. For business breakfasts or catching up with friends, I can make not better suggestion in Streeterville.
