Calhoun Street Tavern
We strive to offer Old Town Bluffton, SC a timeless neighborhood watering hole just a couple blocks from the bluff. Paired with a chef driven menu of southern plates, thoughtful service and comforting lowcountry classic food.
After a swell day on the river or a rough one at work, bring a friend or come alone. Whatever you do... pull up a stool and stay awhile.
You are home.
Went for Sunday brunch. Steak and eggs. Steak had very little that was edible. Steak knife could not cut it. A very tough cut of meat. Ordered eggs poached hard. Came medium at best. Yolks were runny. Simply a worthless meal.
Love eating downtown and went back here because I could not remember what I had eaten the last time I went there. It was okay but not great for the price. Menu selections good but food presentation mediocre. Plate full of deep fried potatoes on bottom with tasteless fried green tomatoes. Crab cakes moist with a tasty sauce and only one poached egg on the whole plate was strange with 2 small crab cakes. They should stick to bar food and alcohol that they did well, entrees not so special . Might go back for music and a drink but not food.
Our drinks were weak, service was very slow, needed water glass filled, food was below average. 4 of us live here and 6 were guests, the guests said they would not come back again. It will be a while before I will give Calhoun's another chance. Such a bummer because we all love Bluffton and the restaurant's location and live music are a plus.
Great prime run au jus! Appreciated extra effort on part of hostess regarding our reserved table. Great energy in the room!
Great food, service and location. Really fun place to go.
The food had been prepped and microwaved. They were short staff. I come here frequently for the ambience, great staff. But the food is euther in point or really bad.
Always a lot of fun on the outdoor patio on a Saturday night when the whether is nice. They had a great band and I love the fact that you can book outdoor seating on OpenTable. The food is always good and cooked to order, and the server was great. He was handling the bar and the tables and was very polite and efficient. Luckily he had a few food runners to help out. My only suggestion is that they get some more moderately priced house wines on the menu.
Seared tuna appetizer was wonderful. Good value and nice servers.
I thought my food was just ok. I ordered the stuffed flounder and it was serve in a bowl “the new trend” and it was hard to get to the grits under the fish. They charged me $14 for my bourbon and another $2 for the “large ice cube”. I’ve eaten all over and never been charge for an ice ball. $16 for a bourbon in a very casual “sports bar” is too much. We will not go back.
We had a dinner reservation for Easter evening (6:30). My wife asked to be seated in the patio and we were accommodated. However, the service out there was exceptionally slow. Additionally, when we got our got our drinks, I had to request a glass for my beer.
My wife asked if we could move inside and we were able to move promptly, which she appreciated. The pace of service dis pick up, but I got the wrong entrée and the prime rib on my wife's sandwich was cold.
We haven't run into theses types of issues in the past. Hopefully we can chalk it off to holiday staffing.
Great place, authentic in what they’re trying to do.
We’ve been twice, on Thursday nights. The food was great. We also liked the live music. Very good singers who were not too loud. Went once just the two of us, once with 10 friends. Everyone loved it. With all the awesome restaurants in the area this is one we will consistently come back to.
The only place in Old Town I’ve come across that I didn’t like. Very disappointed. The bartender had an attitude and our server was brand new, which is fine but he had no help from his manager, who was just sitting in the back looking at a computer screen all night. We had reservations at 6:30 but didn’t actually get food until 8:15, keep in mind the restaurant closes at 9:00 so we were the only ones eating. The music was so loud we couldn’t hear each other talk. The food was good but not what was presented on the menu. Overall for the food and service I’d say overpriced and won’t be back.
Thanks for the reply megan sorry about your bad experience we dont have music on Tuesdays.
Good hamburger! Server pleasant and attentive.
There was a group at a high top table who had a dog with them. It was not a service dog, and this was indoor dining. I have never viewed that before in this restaurant nor any other, and I did not feel good about it. The restaurant does have outdoor dining, which would have been more appropriate.
Always a favorite every time we’re in Bluffton.
Food and service were excellent. Like the atmosphere however the place is noisy.
Our appetizers were amazing! I highly recommend the pickled shrimp as well as the Charleston crab cakes. The sandwich and entree we got we’re both unimpressive compared to our appetizers. The ambiance, drinks and live music were great.
Outstanding food, cool vibe, laid back but dynamically attentive service. You get the idea you are experiencing a next level in contemporary food and drinking dining experience.
Enjoyed a lunch with family from out of town. All had a wonderful time! The service from Victor the bartender was awesome! Food & ambience were great! We will definitely return!
Great food, friendly service, nice atmosphere!
I had guests visiting from New Jersey. I wanted to give them a taste of the Low Country. What better combination than the fabulous food and Low Country Boil!
It’s one of our favorite places for lunch or dinner - the great music is just a cherry on top! Our waitress was helpful, attentive and helpful with my guests with choosing their lunch dishes! Five star in my book!
So this is a tough review. We went yesterday for Brunch. We waited at the hostess stand for a LONG time even though the place was basically empty and I had a reservation. Eventually we were sat. Service was poor. Our server was nice but SLOOWWW. She did apologize for slow bar service (drinks were wonderful btw) but in general we were always looking for her. Honestly the entire wait staff was just super low energy. I do have to say that I feel like this is a problem for HHI/Bluffton right now. People are having a very hard time finding good help. Food was good, but just good. It was a 50/50 if people liked their food. Nothing inedible just nothing wow, and there are a LOT of good restaurants around here that are a wow. Redeeming quality.... the BAND. LowCountry Boil a bluegrass band was there. They were wonderful, they spoke to patrons, music was fun. We stayed for 3 hours! So again it's a tough review because ambiance with the band and a beautiful day made it 5-star but, food was fine, service poor. So yes we would definitely come back but it would primarily be to spend a nice day outside with music.
We had a nice lunch with friends there while staying in Hilton Head. The chicken sandwich was great!
Nice watering hole, average food, outdoor tables probably best bet. We ate inside.
Great place. Will definitely be back. The mahi mahi grilled was delicious.
Service was slow and unfortunately, waitress was not very attentive.
Before we were seated, I had to prompt the staff to wipe down our table. The setup person was putting down the napkins and utensils, then moving them to wipe the table with a dingy towel. Food could have been hotter. But it tasted great.
Consistently excellent food and service in a fun atmosphere.
Our dinners (which were great) were enhanced by the fact that we sat at the bar and had a most enjoyable conversation with the bar manager - Victor. Victor treated us to our first smoked old fashioned which was full-flavored and tasty.
All the food was exceptionally good. We had the fried green tomatoes, ahi tuna, and beet&grapefruit salad as apps and they were all devoured in minutes. I had the Mahi Mahi sandwich with the spinach orzo side and the expresso creme brûlée and I would recommend all three. They were even super accommodating when some members of our party demanded that Pitt march madness basketball be played on the TV. Overall Great cozy place, we visit Bluffton often and will be back for sure.
The bartenders Jackson another handsome guy, Cole? (I wish I remembered!) made some amazing drinks for us and were so nice! The manager accommodated our reservation and made sure we were happy with our experience. The food was AMAZING! We got the shrimp and grits and the crab stuffed flounder. It was by far some of the best food I’ve ever had! Our server Lydia made our whole night! She had a great personality, gave great suggestions and took good care of us too. Overall, one of the best dining experiences we’ve had yet! Thank you Calhoun Street Tavern!
We enjoy dining on the outside patio at Calhoun's. They typically have music on the weekends when the weather is nice. This week's band was El Bodega and they were exceptional. We had a large group, so it was especially nice that we were able to reserve a table in advance.
Had a great meal at Calhoun’s. Fried green tomatoes are fantastic! Tavern potatoes also delicious as a side with the salmon!
Great local setting in Old Town, always friendly service good and food as well
Fun place when you can find a place to park. Very friendly and efficient bartenders. Food was quite good.
Great atmosphere, good food, love the live music outside. This is the first time we have been disappointed with the service. Waitress was very busy and not easy to flag down. Also, another waitress kept bringing food to our table that we did not order.
