Fast-forward a few years. We’re still slinging tacos and burritos, only now we do it from restaurants: in New York, Detroit, and soon, Bahrain. Nobody is more surprised by this development than we are.
Our business has grown, but what we do hasn’t changed one bit. We still wake up every day and make the kind of food we like to eat: fresh, flavorful, satisfying. People seem to like it. Hopefully you will too.
The Calexico Brothers
We ordered the Baja Fish Bowl and the Chicken Enchiladas. Both were outstanding. The fish was cooked to perfection, very crunchy outside and moist inside. The atmosphere is definitely energetic! We have been to the Calexico in Greenpoint NY, and had to compare the two locations. Food is great at both!
Friendly service, great food! Had to change ge time of reservation through OpenTable and that went smoothly. Will go back again!
Waitress was totally absent. Took order then vanished. Food took forever. Helote was BLACK - like charcoal - and they garnished it and sent it out anyway. They got the order wrong initially. Asked for drinks part way into the meal and they came after we were done eating. No water refills (eating spicy food). The food, once prepared properly and what we asked for, was very good. Not worth the horrible service, price (drinks!), and headache though.
Had a really good dining experience everything was great from the food to the service. Would recommend this to everyone
AWFUL SERVICE! We were not helped at all and ended up walking out after 20 minutes of being ignored.
The hostess that was working on Saturday, March 9 was terrible. I waited at the hostess stand for 10 minutes before she slowly walked over to help me. She had no sense of urgency to help me or anyone else. She kept going over to talk to the other workers then would come back to her stand even though there was a long line of people. The hostess/host is the first person customers deal with upon entering a restaurant. Please reconsider having her do this job. She is not the first impression you want people to have when they step in to your restaurant. Everyone that was waiting for their table was talking about how rude and unfriendly she was.
One of the few kid friendly (no kids menu) restaurants where you can make a reservation in Detroit. We went before an event at Ford Field. Food is decent, crowd was manageable. I love their Nacho cheese sauce!
I love it. I will definitely be going back soon.
The service was just OK. The food was not hot, and barely even warm. It was good, but would have been better HOT! Very noisy, and hard to have a conversation.
Great food and quick service - we had two birthdays in the group and they did a nice job giving us some churros to celebrate
Hostess answered, "Yeah" when I called to say we were stuck in traffic. I wasn't even sure I called the right place because there was no formal greeting with the restaurant name. The men's restroom had one stall and the toilet was plugged. Women's restroom had no lights. We had to ask for napkins and utensils after our food was brought to the table. Items listed on the drink menu were not available (mint lemonade) or substituted with another item (the root beer). Perhaps we got there when staff was turning over, but there was no mention of that so we weren't sure who our server was.
On a good note, I would definitely go back for the food. Everything we ordered was fabulous!! The freshness of the food and the attention to detail was excellent.
Please put that amount of attention into your restaurant!
Excellent food and cocktails. The service was less than desirable. The hostess was not incredibly friendly, and our waitress was not very friendly either.. failed to bring us utensils for the appetizers, and made little to no effort to interact with us besides taking our orders and handing us the bill.
Outstanding experience.. seated right away, waiter was attentive an service was fast. Great place. We will be back!
Great bar service but we had a terrible waiter. Went there on Valentine’s Day for a double date before the Wings game. Every time we ordered something it took about 15 minutes to get. Asked for our bill because we were already late to the game and he disappeared. I had to go to the bartender to get the bill and he ended up giving us 20% off. Food was ok, nothing to write home about.
This was one of the very few restaurants that had reservations available on a Saturday night. The atmosphere was good, but the food was subpar. I thought I was going to be blown away with the “crack sauce” but it was just ok. I wouldn’t go back.
Not a good experience. Slow slow and slower. Food took one hour and it was not hot when we got it. Will not go back.
Food is excellent. Great atmosphere. Server little hard to understand (spoke softly).
Unfortunately we were sitting somewhat close to the door and it was freezing. We were unable to take our coats off during dinner which made eating more difficult. I enjoy it better in the summer wouldn’t recommend it again in the winter. The waitstaff was slow and seemed uninterested As she offered a to go container with the delivery of the food which made my friends feel funny. She also seemed less interested since we were not drinkers stating coffee isn’t something they normally serve. Food was great.
It was the Sunday evening before New Years and they had apparently run out of ALL white wine. Our nacho appetizer was good and my baja fish taco, but the other 4 people had terrible dinners. The steak fajitas were so tough they were inedible! The waiter was good & friendly at least. But, I will not be back.
Really cool place but we were seated at a table by the door so it was freezing. Literally had to eat bundled up with our hats on bc whenever the door was opened, a huge gust of wind came swirling in. Food was really good but had to wait 5 minutes for utensils. It looked like they were understaffed since our waitress was the only one running around our section at the tables by the bar. Bathroom toilets weren't flushing properly too. We ate our food so fast so we could leave since we were so cold & the non functioning bathrooms took away from the cool ambience & the deliciousness of the food.
Fried chicken taco was amazing! Very small, crowded place. Glad we made reservations, because the wait was 2hrs!
We did not have a good experience. We waited over 45 minutes to be seated with a reservation. Then waited over an hour for our meal. Many of the staff moved at a snails pace even though the place was packed. Initially is was so hot and so smokey due to the grills that it made your eyes burn. When the food finally arrived it was fine but not exceptional enough to make us forget the almost 2 hour wait. The manager did comp our first round of drinks but then they couldn't run separate checks so we had to pay an automatic 20% gratuity which further ruffled some in our party.
We had a wonderful evening celebrating my birthday. Everyone loved the food!!
Slow service from being seated to even getting a drink order placed. Food was mediocre.
We went to Calexico for my birthday dinner and it was awful. We ordered a drink from the bar and they didn’t have it, so ordered white wine and they didn’t have that either:( I got a grilled chicken burrito and only found 3 tiny pieces of chicken in The Whole burrito! Our server wasn’t friendly and there was a dirty mop bucket by our table.
Margaritas were $10 and I finished it in two sips because they were served in rocks glasses with huge ice cubes. Have to pay for chips and salsa. Guac was decent but for $10 not worth it. Food was very average. I wanted to love this place so much. I had been looking forward to going for so long, but it was so disappointing. Orders were brought out wrong, drink orders were forgotten. If you’re interested in Mexican, Southwest is the place to go for great options, fair pricing, and ambiance.
Tried Calexico with the family last Saturday night. The place was energetic and lively which gave us the impression we made a good dinner choice. Sadly, the food was not very good and we wouldn't go back.
Great food and atmosphere it was a little noisy but nothing too bad. Great location near lots of entertainment in the D
They had a fire earlier in the day and a large portion of the menu was not available. Service was very slow. On the pricey side for what you receive quantity and quality
The food was under cooked and the service very poor.
Really liked this place up until the last 6 months or so. Everything seems to have gone downhill as of late. Service is not a good, food is definitely not as good. Need to make some changes to keep up with all the new / hot spots in the city. Really hope they can turn it around.
The food was outstanding, and the margaritas were delicious. Fabulous addition to the restaurant scene. Will definitely be back!
Thank you so much for your great service and helping us celebrate a fun birthday and welcome a special guest on his first visit to Detroit.
I picked Calexico for all the great reviews and was excited to have my Birthday dinner with my family there ! Sunday night , wasn’t busy , our server was really nice and attentive . My family really doesn’t complain we know things happen. I was disappointed with how small the margaritas were for there price, even though my Moscow mule was very good and one of the bigger ones I’ve had .
We ordered the nachos for a appetizer since you half to pay for chips and salsa , witch I don’t mind we thought we would go this route instead, they were cold .. Overall I was disappointed in how the food was executed , cold , not what I was expecting with the reviews and pictures .. I wasn’t facing the kitchen so I don’t know if anyone was making sure the food went out hot .. They did take mine back to redo it and it was so much better the second time ! I really love trying new places and going downtown so I hope this was just an off day for Calexico
The burritos are huge! Got the shrimp one, there was plentiful shrimp in the burrito, not just beans and rice filler. Red/green combo wet with guac and jalapenos made it fantastic. Street taco style tacos looked good too!
Knowledgeable bar tender. Gave excellent recommendations on beer and food. Comfortable atmosphere. Will definitely go again.
Great Mexican before the Lions game!
