Fast-forward a few years. We’re still slinging tacos and burritos, only now we do it from restaurants: in New York, Detroit, and soon, Bahrain. Nobody is more surprised by this development than we are.
Our business has grown, but what we do hasn’t changed one bit. We still wake up every day and make the kind of food we like to eat: fresh, flavorful, satisfying. People seem to like it. Hopefully you will too.
The Calexico Brothers
Food was good. Decor was cute. Service was just a little slow.
Service was a little slow. Our server was working hard but he seemed a little forgetful
Always a good time at Calexico
A small group of us met for dinner before a concert and found Calexico to serve our purpose. The food and drinks are good enough (the guacamole and the "crack sauce" are personal favorites), the service was decent, and the price was right. I won't rush back, but I will likely return in the future.
The food is very good, the service good, and it’s a fun atmosphere. The only thing I didn’t like is that a Mexican restaurant serves its house Margaritas in little whiskey glasses. After all the ice they put in you do not get much drink at all!
We had two servers but once our food came we didn’t see them much. We had to get up and track them down for many things including to pay. Also it wasn’t even that busy, disappointed...
A group of 6 of us went there before a concert. At first I was disappointed they didn’t have the outdoor space set up for seating. Chairs out there were still stacked even though it was a gorgeous day outside. We were seated right away as it wasn’t very busy. Our waiter was nice but not good at his job and thanked us for being patient right off the bat. He forgot requests, didn’t check on us much and seemed frequently confused even though the place was half empty. As for food the servings were all small. The guac/salsa & chips and the quesadillas tasted good. Our margaritas were small and served in short rocks glasses with lots of ice with salt splattered down one side of the glass. Our tostada salad did not have the requested added chicken and instead was loaded with a ton of sliced jalapeños which were not listed in the ingredients and took quite a while to pick out. When we showed the waiter the pile of them once he finally came back to the table he didn’t offer any apology or offer a new salad. The enchiladas were small but tasted okay. We will not be back.
Good food. Moderate selection. Did take a while to get 3 dishes but quality was good.
Light shining in my eye from a spotlight under the table waitress said she was going to cover it up and never did! Food was ok but not worth the money and not as hot and fresh as could be! Would not recommend.
Food was delicious and the wait staff was very friendly however we waited almost an hour for our food and we were trying to get to a show. There didn’t seem to be a reason for the delay. Would recommend if you have time to wait and you enjoy Hispanic food!
Food and service was great!! Looking forward to my next visit!!
Amazing! Great food and atmosphere, we arrived at a busy time and the workers were hustling but in the midst of all that we were still served promptly and everyone was very nice. The food was phenomenal!! Overall we will for sure be back
Food was blah. Service was ok. Had a weird stench when I walked inside. Smelt like dirty carpet. Would not recommend.
Food was good but service was poor. Friends waited 45mins for a draft beer and a house marg.
Everything was very flavorful. Nice atmosphere. Excellent location right in the middle of the excitement and energy of the center of Detroit. Great location for a casual, delicious meal.
Although service was good, but slow in getting drinks and food.
The last time I was here it was amazing, this time....not so much. We ordered appetizers that came at the same time as our main course, we never recieved the drinks we ordered and we were rushed out super quickly as soon as we finished eating. Overall, it was not a great experience.
Poor service. Not my first time experiencing poor service. Would deter unless you have at least an hour to spare.
The food was delicious, however the service was very poor, as we walked in even that we had reservations they didn’t have a table to sit us, after that it took a good 35-40 for the waitress to come and take our order or even acknowledge that we were there
Service was ok. Hostess stuck us at bar and never got moved once a table opened up. We were in a hurry so we didn't have time to argue. Bathrooms were disgusting and noticed that even though there was a long line of people waiting to get in, no one was clearing tables. Food was good, but margarita tasted like straight lime juice and no tequila.
Great food and ambience! Loved it for a big group.
They were closed, but let me make a reservation.
We ordered the Baja Fish Bowl and the Chicken Enchiladas. Both were outstanding. The fish was cooked to perfection, very crunchy outside and moist inside. The atmosphere is definitely energetic! We have been to the Calexico in Greenpoint NY, and had to compare the two locations. Food is great at both!
Friendly service, great food! Had to change ge time of reservation through OpenTable and that went smoothly. Will go back again!
Waitress was totally absent. Took order then vanished. Food took forever. Helote was BLACK - like charcoal - and they garnished it and sent it out anyway. They got the order wrong initially. Asked for drinks part way into the meal and they came after we were done eating. No water refills (eating spicy food). The food, once prepared properly and what we asked for, was very good. Not worth the horrible service, price (drinks!), and headache though.
Had a really good dining experience everything was great from the food to the service. Would recommend this to everyone
AWFUL SERVICE! We were not helped at all and ended up walking out after 20 minutes of being ignored.
The hostess that was working on Saturday, March 9 was terrible. I waited at the hostess stand for 10 minutes before she slowly walked over to help me. She had no sense of urgency to help me or anyone else. She kept going over to talk to the other workers then would come back to her stand even though there was a long line of people. The hostess/host is the first person customers deal with upon entering a restaurant. Please reconsider having her do this job. She is not the first impression you want people to have when they step in to your restaurant. Everyone that was waiting for their table was talking about how rude and unfriendly she was.
One of the few kid friendly (no kids menu) restaurants where you can make a reservation in Detroit. We went before an event at Ford Field. Food is decent, crowd was manageable. I love their Nacho cheese sauce!
I love it. I will definitely be going back soon.
The service was just OK. The food was not hot, and barely even warm. It was good, but would have been better HOT! Very noisy, and hard to have a conversation.
Great food and quick service - we had two birthdays in the group and they did a nice job giving us some churros to celebrate
Hostess answered, "Yeah" when I called to say we were stuck in traffic. I wasn't even sure I called the right place because there was no formal greeting with the restaurant name. The men's restroom had one stall and the toilet was plugged. Women's restroom had no lights. We had to ask for napkins and utensils after our food was brought to the table. Items listed on the drink menu were not available (mint lemonade) or substituted with another item (the root beer). Perhaps we got there when staff was turning over, but there was no mention of that so we weren't sure who our server was.
On a good note, I would definitely go back for the food. Everything we ordered was fabulous!! The freshness of the food and the attention to detail was excellent.
Please put that amount of attention into your restaurant!
Excellent food and cocktails. The service was less than desirable. The hostess was not incredibly friendly, and our waitress was not very friendly either.. failed to bring us utensils for the appetizers, and made little to no effort to interact with us besides taking our orders and handing us the bill.
Outstanding experience.. seated right away, waiter was attentive an service was fast. Great place. We will be back!
Great bar service but we had a terrible waiter. Went there on Valentine’s Day for a double date before the Wings game. Every time we ordered something it took about 15 minutes to get. Asked for our bill because we were already late to the game and he disappeared. I had to go to the bartender to get the bill and he ended up giving us 20% off. Food was ok, nothing to write home about.
