Due to covid they implemented a new service to order at your table via the app. it is clunky, time consuming and there is no actual "service". And they ask you to pre-pay the tip when you order which isn't ideal.
Food was good, not amazing. Came out somewhat cold and then no one came to check on our order during the meal although someone did bring water. Also, they use these synthetic plastic plates that are reusable and even though I am certain they were clean, they don't really look clean. I'd much rather eat out of a ceramic or other porcelain material plate. Sounds picky I know but it was kind of gross to eat on a plate that had stains in it.
Calavera can do better for the prices they charge.
Good food and cocktails. The restaurant relies on the QR menu system and divides the table service duties... so you never have a person really engaging you as a customer... each moves through as swiftly as possible and it’s noticeable.
Great cocktails, friendly staff and wonderful food. One of our go to spots
We had a great pre-fathers day dinner!
Always fun, always delicious. Inspirational cocktail menu!
Was really looking forward to celebrating husband's birthday at Calavera. We did not enjoy ordering drinks and food on my phone. I look forward to returning once the qr scans are gone! Be safe and continue to take good care.
Food was tasty. Drinks are a bit expensive. Hard to judge service, they are still doing covid protocols (QR code menus, ordering and paying on your phone, limited contact with staff, etc).
With the online ordering system you rarely see a server. We had no water and one person came by once. They automatically included a 20% tip which was not deserving.
The food was quite good. The problem was the rude, slow, and nonexistent service. Never been to an expensive restaurant like this one before where the entire experience was ruined by such a horrible greeter and lack of service.
We ordered the wrong plate it was $2 difference than what we wanted.. Rather than switching it out they had to issue a refund and we had to repurchase it too much work.. we just kept it..customer service is always very important to keep your customers..
Was looking forward to introducing two friends to Calavera, but sorely disappointed in the dinner now. Over-spiced salad, guacamole and the Hongas were bland. I had the vegetarian dinner, which was unmemorable. My friends enjoyed their Tacos de Pollo and Braised Pork though.
The wait staff was very friendly and helpful, but the software to order wasn't functioning on my phone and by the time we even ordered a drink and starters we'd been there for a good 30 minutes.
We let that pass, as the restaurant is just reopening in a bigger capacity and they were flooded with diners.
I'll say yes to recommending, but with caution and in hope of better food as they reopen in full.
Excellent food and cocktails. Outside seating was pleasant.
Food is very good. Location is fun. Service is good. Food is prepared fast with high quality.
Everything was delicious and the food came out so quickly!
It being our first time in Oakland we decided to try this place, as soon as we arrived we were told we had to order our food via app than pay before food and drinks would come to our table. Our plate was missing rice and beans and a server never came to check on us. Out of all the places we tried while visiting this was by far the worst experience.
Outstanding! We loved our waiter who was super busy and yet found the time to patiently explain the menu and make recommendations.
Honestly, it was too expensive given how inconsistent the food was (the tastiest part of a meal shouldn't be the $8.00 side of rice).
Overall a great experience, but a little on the pricey side on the drinks. Using the contactless ordering system doesn’t allow for all the modifications or requests that you want so that’s a little unsettling.
Our waitress was very helpful with us b/c we were not experienced with the new ordering using the QR code. The food was outstanding.
It is very loud inside and windy b/c of COVID ventilation requirements.
If you like Spivey hot the food is over the top delicious. It was too hot for me and I ate it anyway because it was so darn good. I would have appreciated a clear option for milder and someone checking on us to see if our meals were ok.
Food is excellent as always and options of indoor/outdoor space are quite comfortable.
With the change to ordering from your table, it was difficult to get a servers attention to get needed items such as to go boxes. Table behind us was extremely rowdy with no acknowledgement from restaurant staff.
I really enjoyed the ambiance. The wait staff was courteous and attentive. The cocktails, and chips, and guac were awesome, and my entree was good (a little salty, but still good).
So delicious! We sat on the patio, which is blessedly dog-friendly. The QR code menu and ordering system was easy and smooth, the variety of the menu was great too.
Everything was wonderful as usual. They do not have servers anymore and everything is via QR Code. Each time you order something you have to stop and login and order and pay at the time of order. Distracting. When we had interaction with staff, it was always very kind and pleasant, and helpful.
We had a very ok experience. In spite of our reservation and arriving on time, we were told we'd have to wait 15 for the outside table we reserved so we opted to eat indoors, which was ok but on the noisy side.
Not a fan of the online ordering. It detracts from the dining experience to have to spend that much time figuring crap out on your phone. Also, when you actually need/want something aside from what you've ordered (in our case, napkins), there's no one there. Took 2 asks to get it sorted...didn't feel like we were being looked after.
Their cocktails - while slow to arrive - were as great as ever, as was the mushroom ceviche. The other dishes were fine but nothing that makes me feel like we want to go back anytime soon.
The staff really took care of us. We were running a few minutes late for our reservation and called ahead. Once we arrived they were super accommodating and were seated shortly thereafter. The food and drinks were outstanding. Looking forward to our next meal at Calavera.
First girls night out in a very long time! We sat out on the patio and it was awesome. Great food. Great friends. Looking forward to many more.
The restaurant was a little overbooked and there was a small hiccup with getting sat in a comfortable space at our reservation time. There was available seating but the assistant to the host was following some strict policy. Anyhow it got resolved and we had a great meal. The table service was great and I would come back.
You have to scan the menu and order all the items yourself
Always enjoy the the Calavera experience
High quality and interesting menu
For some reason, the ordering via online was too much trouble. We tried with 3 phones to order without any success. My boss was about to walk out and change restaurant. Good thing someone came to take our order. The food was good though. Not for lunch especially if your in a rush to eat to get back to work.
Great dinner, and shout out to Ryan, who was staffing the reception desk, answering phones, handling take-out, and pitching in to bus tables, all with a big smile (at least, I think so - he was wearing a mask, but his body language said, "I'm smiling").
Faulty ordering system, servers and personnel running around, more focus on the entering data on computers than greeting guests. It feels everyone think is too cool
Only reason "service" gets 3 stars is because the restaurant format of ordering and paying from an app, takes much of the traditional service connection away from the dining experience. The service we had was solid, friendly, and timely. At no point could I ask for advice or suggestions on menu items. As this was first time dining there, that's part of the new reality of dining that I'm not used to, yet.
Great patio, super service, tasty food. Especially liked that they waited for everyone to finish their entree before serving the dessert.
Delicious and flavorful food! Amazing drinks! Cool ambiance. The melted cheese appetizer and guacamole were both wonderful. Service was excellent.
Food was tasty and satisfying - a nice variety offered on menu. Margaritas were thirst-quenching and the restaurant was quite full the night we had dinner. Definitely a repeat visit soon. Thank you !
Thank you! Excellent
Overpriced considering the quality of the food was just average. I was annoyed that they charged 20% for a gratuity without any prior notification during the digital ordering process. The wait service was minimal and what service we got was low quality.
Calavera never disappoints. Great food. Patio is the best in Oakland
