Thanks great to meal!
I've been a number of times for drinks and dinner, and for some reason on this visit the food was completely off. The rib-eye steak was charred, the meat beyond well-done, almost inedible. The octopus was also tough and difficult to cut and chew. The margarita was overly sweet. I did tell the server to to tell the kitchen that the steak was overdone, but didn't want to make a big deal out of it. He didn't apologize or offer to comp any of the meal, but I didn't ask either. I will continue coming for happy hour but not for a regular meal.
Food is excellent but their 2 person tables are WAY too small if you are ordering to share and when the waiter brought us the third dish we had to scoop out one dish into another that was not empty yet to make room and have our plates halfway off the table. You would think they would sit us at a bigger table. We ordered 3 dishes, this is not outlandish.
Wonderful 🌮 for a vegan like me. The cocktails were great 👍🏽
The cocktails are fantastic (but the bloody mix is a little bit chunky which is weird but not bad) and the alcohol/spirits offerings is huge! The food is all around fairly good. There wasn't anything mind blowing but it wall good. They do need to work on their poached eggs - the yoke shouldn't be cooked.
Absolutely divine atmosphere. Unique and thoughtful. Food was epic.
Outdoor brunch! Excellent location — especially if you have a toddler like us — and outstanding food & service! Thank you! We were able to enjoy brunch without worrying about catching covid — what a blessing!
The liquor is quite expensive - $15 for a small-ish margarita and $9 for a can of beer, yikes! The food was tasty, so next time I'll load up on cocktails before I go.
Food, cocktails and service are so good!!
We love Calavera - we are here at least 1x per week for dinner and it is our neighborhood haunt. The front-of-house and wait staff are terrific - always kind and friendly. Love the ambiance of the outdoor patio and they are always accommodating with our fur-baby bringing him water and giving him loads of love.
Cocktails are amazing, food is consistently great. We always bring our friends here when they come to visit us in Northgate Waverly and they love it as well.
Our go-to faves are the Mezcalero cocktail, the Princessa cocktail, and the spicy margarita.
Food faves are the shrimp enchiladas, cochinta pibil and the lamb.
Tacos are also amazing.
Delightful outdoor dining on a Sunday afternoon. We were toasty warm on the covered patio! We enjoyed the beautifully prepared and creative cocktails, especially the two different gin and tonics on the menu. Delicious poke-like ahi tuna tostada with jicama and the creamy tortilla soup was unlike any I've had before. Great spot for an early supper.
Loved the food and the atmosphere. The ordering process was a bit off putting since we were a group of 8 boomers and not quite up to snuff with the modern technology of ordering. Food came at different times since there were 3 different orders from the table. We did not all eat simultaneously but food was delicious.
Book club holiday gathering
The food and drinks were delicious! The service was wonderful. I’ll definitely be back soon.
Good fold but restaurant was cold.
Such a wonderful place with great service and great food!
Requested a table with privacy, which is what we got. Service was super friendly and accommodating. Food (brunch) was okay; didn’t make as great an impression on my date as I had planned from past dinner experiences.
The food was delicious, ambiance was fun. We all enjoyed it. I've come a few times before and it is a great go to for unique Mexican food.
More crowded than I thought it would be but it's been a while since I've been out
Great find. Food and service were very good and the atmosphere was on point (quiet yet energetic). The only critique, and this is more a comment on the state of things today and not specifically on Calavera, is the ordering process. Everything, from viewing, ordering, and paying, is done through an app. This removed the typical nice conversation with your server where they discuss specials and where you can ask a few questions. Felt like a high-quailty cafeteria or fast-food order experience.
When in town I will happily go back.
Meeting up with old friends
Did not have a table for the requested reservation, food was not very good.
Food was quite expensive, not very good and small portions. Drinks were good but expensive as well.
Nice menu, tacos, ceviche delicious. Mix up the tacos on one platter? Might be nice. Service not great; forgot part of order, had to ask twice, took fork and never brought another and we couldn’t get their attention. Didn’t clear plates until second ‘order’ came which was a bit awkward.
Had a great time on the patio! Food was spectacular and servers were super friendly. Highly recommend this spot!
I really like the food at Calavera, very good quality. Everyone was very friendly, too and service was fast.
Love the house margaritas, quesadillas, flautas de papas and - just everything. Wonderful, warm greeting on arrival from the ever-charming Ryan and can't say enough about the funny and attentive Gabby. Such a great atmosphere. Been there many times, but how did I not notice the subtle Calaveras painted on the terra-cotta wall until last night?
We are repeat customers, and disappointed to experience food quality has significantly dropped.
Had the following:
- Aguachile Verde: only dish we most enjoyed. Spicy and well portioned
- Pulpo Asado: pulpo was well charred, but was way to chewy.
- carnitas tacos: carnitas was bit dry. Otherwise, tasty.
- roasted whole snapper: looks great, but fish was not fresh & tasted very fishy and dish was overall under-seasoned.
- frijoles refritos: too dry… way too dry….
Online ordering and food drop off made us feel like eating at a canteen.
tequila flight was good!!
This is one of my neighborhood go toos. Never disappoints me or the guests I bring. Has also been great for takeout. There are often seasonal menu changes so there is always a variety of choices. Love when the weather allows outdoor patio seating. Service always good. Enjoy!
The service was really good the food sadly was decent at best. However, it was a very nice clean and very nice place to have dinner.
Absolutely everything was fantastic, from the service to the food. The staff were friendly and took the time to explain how to use the mobile system to place our order. The food was phenomenal; the mole really hit home because it was as if my grandmother or mother made it. My only critique is to perhaps allow the inside of the churrodona to cook a little longer. Other than that, everything was exceptional.
Great food, great staff. Love this place , check it out
Ordering is done via app, so if you want the cocktails and firsts to come out before the entrees you have to not order entrees at first.
We had the classic margarita and salt air sandia which were excellent.
We started with guacamole. This was the only average dish.
For entrees we got the cochinita pibil and carnitas tacos, both fantastic, as well as green rice and refried beans that were enjoyable.
Our server was very welcoming and happy to answer questions.
It was a lovely evening and we'll be sure to come back!
If you eat meat have the best barbacoa in California. Unctuous to the point of bliss. The cochinita is juicy, tender full of cinnamon. I also appreciate the menu is clear for dietary restrictions. The chips with cricket are fun too.
Service was terrible. Automated ordering - which means nobody is overseeing food delivery. Food arrived intermittently, cold, and over-cooked.
Staff are always helpful, friendly, and proactive Shout out to Andy!
Loved the large house margarita jar. We had some delicious fried cheese. My tacos were good but not great and I wasn’t a fan of the chips, but overall good drinks and solid food and good ambiance.
Food was exquisite (the mole!!!) and our drinks were divine. I highly recommend a Paloma with fresh grapefruit juice. Amazing!
