Calavera Mexican Kitchen & Agave Bar Ratings and Reviews
We did not know when we made the dinner reservation that we would be seated in an outside area. The heavy drop down clear plastic shades that surround the area have large gaps at the corners, which is where we were seated. Midway through dinner a breeze kicked up--to say the least, it was cold and unpleasant. A lot of restaurants have outdoor seating, which they manage to keep heated. I mentioned to the manager on the way out that it was really unpleasant; she was nice and told me they were aware of the problem. She also mentioned that when their dining room is fully booked, Open Table reservations are taken for the outside area or high top tables in the bar area. I don't recall seeing any mention of this when we made the reservation. Even so, I would have assumed an outdoor area would have enough heating to dine comfortably in winter. Also, a heads up on the high top tables would have been good--one of our party has a disability and had they assigned us one of those tables, we would not have been able to be seated. I've used Open Table for years and this is the first time I've gotten what I consider to be second rate seating. If you book here, call to confirm that you have a table in the dining room. Food good, service excellent but the overall experience was unsatisfactory for the reason stated.
Planned a business dinner for 2 groups of 10 and they were very accommodating. The food was fantastic and they were more than helpful with food allergies. SO pleasantly surprised since we didn't know much prior to going. Will definitely go back when in town.
Menu is relatively small, but excellent. Tacos ( 3 choices: carnitas, chicken, or eggplant, we had one of each) very tasty, Cochinita Pibil was fantastic, with tons of flavorful pork. Guac and thick/crispy chip appetizer was good, though not complex or spicy. Both the house margarita and the Ron Cooper (margarita with a shot of mezcal) were delicious. When the signature espuma cocktail (Princesa de la Maracuya) was not to our taste, our waiter quickly replaced it with a different (and excellent) drink, at no charge. We went home very happy and will be back!
One word of warning: Calavera delivers delicious food from the Oaxacan region. If you're looking for a burrito or enchilada, keep looking!
The ambience and staff are great! However the food was not good at all! No Flavor! I would rather eat out of a taco truck or Taco Bell, then eat another meal here. They need to switch up the food because everything else about this place is great including the bar selection. Some of the most amazing gourmet cocktails.
This is my 3rd time to Calavera and I usually always recommend it to people, but with the preface that it's a little pricey.
The service is very good too, however, if you pay attention, the waiters/waitresses usually always recommend the most expensive items on the menu, and try to up-sell you a lot. It's a standard practice with a lot of restaurants, but I noticed it quite a bit here. Be wary.
If money ain't a thing, go for it!
I really love this restaurant. The food is excellent - interesting and full of flavor - and the cocktails are outstanding. Everything's good but, for something simple and cozy, I highly recommend the chicken soup. Oh - and the chips are great, thick-cut and yummy!
Wait staff literally would not look at you if you were ready to order or needed anything. They ignored us for 15 minutes. We have been there many times and really like the place. Normally with our group we get two “ jaras” of margaritas. Our waitress didn’t know what a jara was so she just walked off till I flagged someone else down.
Five of us celebrated a birthday at Calavera, and it was the first visit for four out of the five. Everyone loved the food selections, which we decided to order family style. We had the branzino, duck tacos, carnitas tacos, crispy potatoes and cauliflower. There was plenty of food and nothing left over.
We liked the flavor profiles and the unique Mexican-inspired dishes. Everyone felt that they'd come back again.
The wait staff was terrific and friendly without being overbearing. Good recommendations from our server!
We selected this restaurant because it was close to the Paramount Theater. The outdoor seating was great (it was a warm day). The server was very nice. However, we waited about 15+ minutes before anyone checked in with us. 30+ minutes after that for our drinks to arrive. The server said the bar was backed up, but 30 minutes seems more like the bartender didn't show up for work that night. The guacamole arrived before the drinks. The Margaritas were nice. The chips were nice. The guac meh. The meal was mediocre at best. If there is nothing else available pre-theater or some other occasion, maybe for a margarita chips. The rest, I'd skip.
We came here before a show. The food was amazing. However, it’s disappointing when dessert takes more than 30 minutes to arrive at the table and there is no communication from the server as to why it’s taking longer than the 15 minutes promised.
It’s crazy how poor service /a lack of communication can really color the entire experience.
We were told the kitchen was running behind due to the show demand. I’m not sure a restaurant can last if they can’t keep up with demand. It’s a shame, the food really was special !
Chose to have a small birthday celebration with 6 people on Sunday afternoon. Restaurant was about a third full both inside and out. We chose the patio. No server came over in the first 25 to 30 minutes. We did get water twice, no chips. Finally server made it to the table and I commented that a new record was set for longest wait to get a drink in a Mexican restaurant.
Server said they were understaffed and only 1 bartender. While I am certain it was true, it made for an awful experience. To top things off, we all ordered our food and mine did not arrive. Server said there was a mix up. Hmmm, could be coincidence or just poor service playing through. The 6 of us agreed that it was too bad as food was very good but this group will not be returning. Good luck, you might need it.
Had not been here since it opened and really enjoyed it. It was a warm Fall evening and the outdoor seating was perfect. We were a large party and wanted a lower noise level for conversation. The staff recommended outside and I am glad I went for that.
I am always looking for authentic Mexican cuisine and can say that Calavera comes close.
The mole tasted great. 2 chicken pieces was a generous portion but there could have been more mole on the plate. The Chile Relleno was different in that the poblano pepper was almost raw. It made it hard to cut and should have been more cooked through. That dish was also very small in my opinion. Everyone else had tacos and seemed to like them.
The chips are a little too thick for my taste. I like thin and crispy tortilla chips.
Our waiter was really great. Very patient. Some people arrived late and he explained the menu multiple times.
