First opened in 1883 in Italy, The Strand Hotel Bray are the first in Ireland to welcome Caffe Vergnano to our shores. Offering rich coffees, pastries and Italian cuisine and open 7 days a week from early morning through to the evening. We booked in for dinner in Cafe Vergnano but as it was raining and we were staying in the hotel we were able to sit indoor in Wilde’s restaurant. Staff were great, very friendly and attentive! Food and drinks were lovely. Menu is a little limited but that’s common nowadays with restrictions. We really enjoyed it!

I booked this restaurant on the basis that there was vegan options on the menu. When we arrived the menu was for Wilde’s, the restaurant downstairs. There was no vegan main-course and when asked we were told the chef could not prepare a vegan main course. They could have very easily offered a veggie pizza with no cheese but were extremely unaccommodating especially since the menu was not for the restaurant we had booked. Very disappointed and staff we unhelpful.

Terrible service - we were seated for a noon reservation and were told the kitchen wouldn’t be open for 30+ min and then ignored (restaurant had been open since 9 am). The manager also turned people away who had made reservations. We ultimately left and went somewhere else.

Brought to table by manager and given no menus - waited 10 minutes for someone to notice us - waiter arrived and told us the kitchen was closed even though we reserved and paid deposit on opentable. Waiter went to check with kitchen then came back and told us they would serve us if we hurried up (exact words and probably verbatim what the chef barked at her). The menu was not the same as advertised on open table - no Italian dishes and basic bar food only. We ordered starters and mains and the waiter came back from kitchen and told us that it would all have to arrive together. Nachos were gross.. half melted mozzarella and some sauce from a jar and the fish was deep fried but cremated. Burger was grand. Ordered more drinks and told we couldn’t get them because they were out of ice.. had to listen to another angry table waiting for their round of drinks for 30 minutes and another table waiting endlessly for bill who eventually took matters into their own hands and got up and went looking for a manager. Another table questioning items on their bill. Seemed like senior staff/ managers hanging around the bar doing nothing with face masks off or half on while the young staff tried their best. The floor manager (I think) dropped our bill off and everyone else’s while we were still eating. Last thing we ordered was a pint Heineken and a Prosecco. Waited 30 minutes for Prosecco to arrive from another part of the building and my wife just put it in her bag and we left because we had already been asked to settle up. I’m sure the place is usually better than this review but we caught them at the end of a very busy day.. it was genuinely farcical though.

Overall a lovely spot to eat. Service was pleasant. My mojito mocktail was not nice. Also I clearly asked to not to bring rice or chips with my curry as I won't eat them and don't want to waste food. Bowl of rice landed on my table few minutes after 🙄 Went to the bin. Hate that. Curry was lovely though.

Booked Cafr Vergano for a birthday treat for my friend, table was on the terrace right beside the stairs so not very comfortable with people constantly passing by, also the table next to us was very close and not very private. We ordered nachos to start they were fine nothing exciting, as the menu was not that extensive we ordered two pizzas, they were very basic and we had to send one back as it was incorrect. Service was all over the place with one of the servers approaching us four times with the same drink that wasn't for us. Unfortunately I won't be rushing back for more.

We arrived on time and there was no body to seat us. We had to go inside and yelled hello twice because the staff were busy chatting to each other. We were told that there will be 15 to 20 minutes delay with our food as there was a problem in the kitchen. We were still chewing our starter when the staff cleared our table telling us that our mains were on the way, leaving the used cutleries for us to reuse. I won't comment bad on the food but it was neither upto standard. Pinacolada was as good as shaved ice. Worst is I was charged 10 euros for a no show and it was so easy for them to say that it was a mistake. Refund was made but it had already caused me and my husband a good degree of disappointment. No wonder the whole place was near empty despite the beautiful weather. The place should be managed better with better trained crews if only to recover from this pandemic loss.

Great view from the terrace and friendly staff. Terrace was a little shabby and food was not great, it was just ok. Mussels had no sauce so we were disappointed. We stayed in the hotel this is attached to and it was perfect!
