Caffe Riace Ratings and Reviews
Our servers were nice. However, our service was very slow (approx 10 mins before we received water, approx 25+ mins before we received drinks, 40+ mins before we were able to order food). The room was very warm and we ultimately had to open a window. The food was average and didnt offer the freshness Ive come to expect as an Italian and dining in the Bay Area.
My husband and I have gone to Caffe Riace for years and we were delighted to bring friends for their first time! Everything was as wonderful as we have come to expect (though I was a bit concerned based on some of the recent reviews). The only thing that seemed strange was that several of the items on the menu were not available. My girlfriend had to try three different orders to get one that the chef had available. It left her thinking that Caffe Riace was maybe winding down, which would be a terrible disappointment to us! Thanks you for giving us such a nice evening!
The outdoor dining was lovely with fountains and statues. It was quiet and serene. Wait staff were great. Food was OK. Thought prices were a bit high for lunch. We all ordered appetizers for the main course. There was enough to eat but flavor was just OK. Excellent expresso!!!
Wonderful food and ambiance. Terrible service. We were ignored for twenty minutes, forty until a bottle of wine we ordered came out and two hours for our entrees to arrive. After having enjoyed this restaurant for years, we were highly disappointed in this experience
We arrived at Caffe Riace for our reservation last Sunday. No one there, door to kitchen locked with a chain, one table still had wine glasses but nothing set for dinner. Several other dinner groups of guests arrived and were surprised like us that the restaurant was deserted...no notification of why. Will probably not go back.
We have been at this restaurant several times and haven't been there in over a year. Unfortunately either they changed management or servers, our server could barely smile at us and it was over 40 before we received our bill. There were only 5 other tables of other guests.
I have been to Caffe Riace a couple of times before and it has easily become one of my favorite dinner date spots. However, I made a reservation for this past Sunday at 7:30pm for an anniversary dinner and was surprised to find the place closed. I'm not sure if there was a change in business hours and even if there was, a courtesy call would have been nice to know that we could not be accommodated that day. We had to scramble to find another place that was open and could take us without a reservation. As I said earlier, we sincerely love this place but better communication would be appreciated.
I hestitate to write this review as I have had many great experiences at Cafe Riaace over the years but this latest meal was terrible. The service was non-existent. There was a party going on and it appears that most of the other orders got lost. After an hour the waiter came back to us and asked us what our order was! I had to ask for refills for my water!
We called over the manager and while she was apologetic she just gave my husband a free glass of wine. So, after a frustrating evening the food arrived and was fine but it seemed that the incovenice was lost to the owner. The waiter had checked out a this point.
Anyway, we won't be rushing back there for a while. I will try again so make sure it wasn't a one off. Very disappointing.
Service was terrible. There was a large party on the patio and the wait staff seemed preoccupied with that event and the regular customers were highly neglected. Service was slow. Had to ask multiple times for items. Some requests were never filled. Saw our waiter among the party guest most of the time. Had to ask others for service. Salad arrived AFTER entree. Reservation was for 6 PM. Had theater tickets for 8 PM. Almost didn't get there on time.
We arrived on Saturday evening on time for a 6:45 reservation. Around 7:00, we ordered a bottle of red wine ($45). Around 7:25. we were told that they were out of that wine. No food order taken yet. Then we ordered a different bottle of red wine (around the same price), and we were told that they were out of that one too. There was only one waiter that we could see and a waiter trainee. We looked around and saw other people who were seated and looked unhappy. So, we gave up and left, and then walked to another restaurant and had a good meal there. The ambiance of Caffe Riace is very nice, particularly in the summer when you can sit outside. However, they have to get their act together before we will give them another chance.
The courtyard setting was lovely, particularly on a warm night. The staff was helpful: when we expanded the group size from 8 to 10, they immediately accommodated it, although the service was not very attentive. Regrettably, the one Rose on the wine list was not available on this summer evening; and it turned out the food left something to be desired: the lobster in Fettucine Aragosta was tender and sweet, but there was not much of a sauce (couldn't taste the tomato-cream nor the tarragon); two people who ordered the Petrale Sol found the fish 'not delicate' and the risotto mushy; the lamb chop was over-cooked. It's too bad since we really like the setting...
Caffe Riace is a fabulous Palo Alto restaurant, with the most wonderful patio space. Eating outside is an absolute dream -- the tables are beautifully set and are spaced among lovely fountains, statues, and once dark, romantic lighting. They have a very authentic menu, which you know the owners take great pride in. They also have an interesting wine list with selections from many parts of the world. While the servers are incredibly attentive (and that is very much appreciated), the only negative I would say about the restaurant is that their timing is not great, can be a bit overbearing in their check-ins and should be more mindful of conversations (again, while we appreciate being checked upon to ensure comfort, we felt consistently interrupted). Beyond that, a great place to dine that will transport you to an outdoor cafe in Italy!
Despite having zone coverage, the service was oddly slow as I came to delivering food or drink.
Like three people would take the order then everyone would ignore you.
They could stand to tweak their service model. Run bread and water early and be clear as to who is assigned which table.
Also, lugging the giant tablet to the table to process payment is a clunky touch.
We had a 7 pm reservation. They were out of the crab ravioli. They were out of the cannelloni Della momma. They were out of the petrale sole. I was finally able to successfully order my fourth choice - lobster and shrimp over fettuccine and the seafood was undercooked. Oh and did I mention I had to ask twice to get the bread they offered? We had a lovely graduation dinner there 8 years ago but it hasn't held up well.
Inspired by a city in Italy, the site is promising. However, several food ingredients seemed to be missing (anchovies from Caesar salad, feta on the salad), and wine on menu wasn't available. food tasted good. We sat inside as outside was chilly, and background music and one other group made it hard to hear.
The restaurant was closed, there was no sign or answer to the phone. We had to find another restaurant. If they were not going to be open, why accept reservations. If an emergency, al least have a staff member show up to post a sign or have a message on the answering machine.
Went for Mother's day. The waiters/servers seemed to be struggling even though it was not that crowded. They had a fixed menu and my daughter was with me and does not eat that much. First they said she cannot just order an entrée must pay the full price and I said what? They offered her the chicken dish which was a very thin slice of chicken breast for $22. Never checked on us, or refilled our water glasses until I had to get out of my chair and tell them. I had always liked this place because of the outside garden which is lovely but the service and food is *not* that good anymore. It was a day to enjoy and relax not have to get up and ask for what I needed.
