If you want to eat on the terrace, be sure to call ahead and make sure the heaters are working! We reserved a table outdoors on the lovely terrace near the fountain over a month in advance to treat some friends for a special occasion. The ambience of the outdoor terrace, remarked on by many reviewers, was the deciding factor in our decision to choose Caffe Riace. However, when we arrived almost none of the (numerous) outdoor heaters were functional, and it was definitely too cold without them. The waiters gave us a private room instead -- okay but nothing special. Once seated in the private room, there were long stretches when nobody checked on how we were doing. The pasta dishes were homemade and quite good but also very expensive. There were no extra touches such as bread or side vegetables -- just the pasta. Overall this was a disappointing experience.
We've been coming here for years but probably haven't been in about 1 year. Between 6-830 Saturday night they served a total of 10 people. The food was ok. My pasta was not hot, salads not great. One of them the dressing was way off, the other so loaded with minced onion it was almost inedible. Have had both in the past without issue. Kitchen was not up to par at all! Maybe that's why there were so few people there on a Saturday. Wont be back anytime soon. Very disappointed.
Once again great food!!
Worst experience I’ve ever had. Maitre’d/server was hanging out on the sidewalk. Got stained menus, no water. Completely useless for a good 20 minutes. We got up and left, went to iTalico, and had a wonderful meal at an establishment that actually wanted the business. No wonder there was only one table on a Friday night at 7:30. This place was wonderful when I was a kid. I’m in F&B myself, and it just blows my mind how this place went so downhill. Very disappointing, especially since it was a special occasion. I heard the food is still wonderful. Too bad we didn’t try it!
I love this place. The food was amazing as always. Keep up the great work!
Very beautiful and spacious outdoor setting! Perfect for an August afternoon. I noticed plenty of heaters nearby in case of cooler weather! Great place to meet for business or pleasure. Fairly easy parking on the street. Great Ceasar salad and eggplant/mozzarella rolls. Everyone's meal (including cannelloni, risotto, and crab cakes) looked wonderful. Will definitely return for a special lunch or dinner with friends or for a luncheon meeting.
We went to the restaurant with our friends Saturday evening. To our surprise the restaurant was not busy.
The food that everyone order was very tasty. It was warm evening and this beautiful patio with interesting sculptures and good Italian food make us relax and happy.
Outdoor seating is charming - a fountain as well as sculptures! It's as though you are actually in Italy or Sicily. Food is delicious - very Italian!
my husband had Osso Bucco. It was excellent. but the lamb from "special of the day was just OK with the vegetable having been overcooked and reheated in my opinion. The tiramisu was very good.
Also, the restaurant should update their prices on their website
Thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We moved out of the area in 2010 and make a point of coming back when we are in the area. It is the nearest place I can think of to dining in an outdoor café in Italy! The food was excellent and the waiter was great and very well dressed!
Great homemade pasta (all pastas are honemade and fresh) with nice outdoor seating and italian music. The decor outside is great: you feel like you're in a itqlian village square.
wait staff had a very indifferent attitude. checked in with reservation for lunch; told to pick a table on the patio. 30 mins. later i had to walk into the restaurant in to order a drink and water. ready to order, had to ask for a menu. then had to flag down the waiter to put in order. only thing i didn't have to ask for was the check. i have come to this restaurant many times for dinner. food always delicious. if i come again it will be for dinner.
Great meal, dessert and service. What more can you ask for?? We can’t wait to go back.
Declined since we were last there. Food tasted great but we were sick all night. Service terrible. Nice to be outside in pretty setting but will not return.
Cafe Riace was unable to accept diners when we arrived because of a problem in the kitchen. However, they never contacted us to let us know, despite our having made a reservation with all of our contact information available. Very disappointed.
Major disappointment this time. The steak came drowned in mushroom sauce rather than being a nice, dry, well seasoned filet. The wine list is really out of date and needs updating. The piped-in music is loud--- we asked twice for it to be turned down. The saving grace is that the patio is always a lovely place to dine on a summer night.
We were happy with the food. Our server was not pleasant, he was somewhat arrogant, and did not tell us that we need to pay extra for substituting the risotto with a small amount of pasta. We discussed this with him, he was not happy but did remove the extra charge. We liked the atmosphere and the food.
The menu had many options. What we ordered was good and we'll be coming back to check some other items. It's a huge open patio with eclectic Italian-familiar deco and surrounds a fountain, so it's certainly interesting.
Our server was also the host, I believe, and he was not good. Very unresponsive, slow, didn't even bring us water after asking. The other servers when looking around looked better though.
It's not acceptable that we were able to reserve through OpenTable yet not get the associated points for dining.
Always delightful on a pleasant evening. The al fresco setting takes one to Italy for the evening. Keep up the great work.
I was blown away at how fantastic this place is! The food, service and atmosphere were wonderful. I would highly recommend this restaurant to my friends.
I've dined at Caffe Rice a number of times before and have generally been pleased. This time was different. If I had to use a single word to describe the place it would be that the staff was "overwhelmed". We arrived for a 7 p.m. but it took us until about 8:15 to get our orders in and then another extremely long wait to be served. By the time they took our order, two of the entrees we were interested in were gone. In fairness, they tried to make amends by giving us a free dessert to be shared by the four of us, which we appreciated.
Frankly, we wonder if the place is under new management that is still working out the kinks. There are quite a few to be worked out.
Service was moderate, not great (had to get up to ask for more water). Gnocchi with pesto was delicious; others said their meals were great. Calamari lacked inspiration and sauce seemed to be simply bland mayonnaise (no, not aioli). Patio seating is AMAZING.
We went for lunch on a Sat and everything that was served felt like leftovers cobbled together.
We had reservations at 7:00 pm. Even though OpenTable said the restaurant was booked many times that day, there was not one single other table booked the entire time we were there. It felt very strange to be the only diners there. Also, the inside seating was in a separate room to the side of the courtyard, which felt like an afterthought. Food-wise, the Caesar salad needed more dressing, as it was very dry.
I think there's something wrong with the ratings system on Open Table for this restaurant because it had very high ratings across the board, yet in person the restaurant didn't deliver.
Nice outdoor dining. Great place for a relaxed, outdoor meal. When the weather gets warmer, this place is one of my picks for an early night dinner.
The restaurant’s founder and longtime owner is a gracious and welcoming Old World host, and he is supported by a solid kitchen and an able and efficient wait staff. Riace delivers a dependable menu anchored in traditional Italian fare, and the large outdoor space, with the owner’s vintage Vespas “parked” by a fountain and his vintage Fiat at the entrance, evokes the atmosphere of a ristorante in an Italian piazza. Molto bene!
Food was delicious! We also thought the corkage fee at $20 was fair and just right.
Possibly the worst service I have ever experienced. We had to track down the waiter every time we needed something (including ordering drinks, dinner, and the check). The place was absolutely empty aside from my table and two others. One of us ordered wine from the menu, and 20 minutes later after tracking the waiter down, we were told that wine was unavailable followed by a flurry of excuses. It started getting cold, and we asked to have the outdoor heater nearby turned on. The one closest to us didn’t work, so they grabbed another and dragged it, metal on concrete, through the patio, hitting umbrellas and almost one of us along the way. This was a horrible experience, and the unfortunate part is that the food was not bad, by any standard. We will not be returning, regardless.
Great place! All of the staff and owner Francisco were super friendly and attentive. We sat outside and the courtyard is beautiful.
What a fantastic meal. Not crowded but such a wonderful place!
The manager insisted on opening and giving me a small bottle of mango prosecco, which I would never have ordered. I appreciated the gesture and was a good sport and tried it. Both my friend and I thought it was on the House, and were surprised to be billed $10 for the prosecco we hadn't ordered.
Our servers were nice. However, our service was very slow (approx 10 mins before we received water, approx 25+ mins before we received drinks, 40+ mins before we were able to order food). The room was very warm and we ultimately had to open a window. The food was average and didnt offer the freshness Ive come to expect as an Italian and dining in the Bay Area.
Initially seated without menus, bad cork lead to challenges w/ wine, of the two entrees, one was wrong, and despite telling waiter no dessert or coffee, it took
forever to get the check. When we did, nothing was comped / discounted ...
My husband and I have gone to Caffe Riace for years and we were delighted to bring friends for their first time! Everything was as wonderful as we have come to expect (though I was a bit concerned based on some of the recent reviews). The only thing that seemed strange was that several of the items on the menu were not available. My girlfriend had to try three different orders to get one that the chef had available. It left her thinking that Caffe Riace was maybe winding down, which would be a terrible disappointment to us! Thanks you for giving us such a nice evening!
It's always nice to be on the patio!
One of my favorites places
We haven't been to Caffe Riace in some time and were pleasantly surprised by augmentations to decor, sculpture in the garden. Our server aimed to please and the food and wine were delicious.
The outdoor dining was lovely with fountains and statues. It was quiet and serene. Wait staff were great. Food was OK. Thought prices were a bit high for lunch. We all ordered appetizers for the main course. There was enough to eat but flavor was just OK. Excellent expresso!!!
Great place tucked away from crowds. Great food, service, and no push to turn over tables. Lovely place for nice, quiet outdoor dinner
You guys need help, server was beyond bad, ruined entire meal...
Where are the owners??
No one is minding the ship, don't bother going
