We had a reservation for 7.45pm, we waited 30 minutes until we were sat and that was after having to ask the host again which he seemed to have forgotten us. The waiter blatantly ignored us and spoke to tables that were sat after us and we had to ask to have our order taken. At this point were 45 minutes into our reservation and no where with anything. He came over after we asked and was out of the food of preference. We gave up and left, the staff (other than the bartenders) really didn't seem to care and it was clearly understaffed due to the host being on his own with no help and a lot of people waiting. We were left disappointed and hungry. Really unfortunate since we were really excited to try this place.
Food was great and great value for money . Very busy evening had to wait to be seated for 20 minutes although had booked a table. Was sat near the door which was being constantly left open so was cold.
Great food, really friendly service, a little slow but it was very busy. Very loud, don't go if you want to have a nice quiet conversation go for the fun, the buzz and the food.
Great ambiance and decor, really nice place to be. Food tasted good, I had the ravioli for my main. Very tasty however if I’d been given twice as much I’d of still thought it was a small portion.
Lovely ambience! We were met by Jo the Maitre d’ who was delightful! It was my Husband’s birthday and we were made to feel very special! Highly recommend!
Great service and food
Great food and atmosphere - thank you
We really loved the ambience of this restaurant and the lovely menu designed for a pre-theatre dining. The food and cocktails were well prepared and excellent value for money. We had a hiccup when, after two requests, our dessert was not delivered and we were forced to abandon it to get seated in the theatre. I was miffed by this - but the restaurant management were highly apologetic and we got free coffees and had our desserts after the play. I will return to Cafe Monico when next I am in the neighbourhood.
food was delicious, i had Paliarde of Chicken and although this was not on the Sunday lunch menu, it was no problem to make this for me. Coated with Rocket and Parmesan large flakes with perfect fries on the side. We all enjoyed our food and the ambience.
The location is good for theatre and cinemas.
The decor is acceptable.
The food was not good. I had fish and chips; the chips were cold and soft, and there was little fish inside the crispy batter. The sorbet was very watery (no taste of fruit).
I will not eat there again.
Best waiter. The tall gentleman even tried to get what Bossa nova music was playing. All around great!
I booked this restaurant as a pre theatre dinner. We arrived at 5:45 so with plenty of time to eat before the show. However the gap between our starter and main was far longer than I would have liked leaving me too worry if we would be finished in time. The food, when it did arrive, was fine but one of our dishes fish and chips wasn't great. Very small portion and not much fish. Other than that the restaurant was good.
This was the perfect place for a pre theatre lunch. We chose the prix fixee menu which had a valences choice and excellent portion size. The food was cooked to order and piping hot. We will definitely come again.
Fairly casual venue, with very cosy décor, great staff and unpretentious well-prepared food.
Nice food, great proximity to theatres. We had a lovely pre-show meal with great service!
We had an amazing dinner, the restaurant wasn't too busy, and the ambiance was great
We ate at Cafe Monico between shows of the cursed child. It wasn’t too busy at 4.15pm, so we were served very swiftly. They followed our request of seats in the balcony area. We all had different meals, fish and chips, vegetarian breakfast, ham omelette and chicken sunday lunch. All very agreeable. As normal a service charge was added to the bill. Would eat here again.
Delicious food, everything very tasting
We went on a Saturday afternoon. It was quiet and most of the clientele were tourists rather than regulars. staff were very welcoming and the service was good throughout. the food was fine. So why I am not ecstatic about this restaurant. I don't know, I can't quite put my finger on it.
We had booked in advance but had to wait 50 minutes to be served (with hungry young children in tow). There was no apology from the waitress. When it came the food was disappointing - eg my poached eggs - hardly difficult to cook - were watery and undercooked. We won’t be going again.
The food was ok but the service wasn’t. We were going to see a show next door so didn’t have long (we told our waiter). He didn’t smile once. We asked for bread and he didn’t bring it - just felt like he couldn’t be bothered. We were in and out in 45 minutes and a £10 service charge was added to our table of 3. I said I didn’t want to pay it and he made me feel very uncomfortable saying he would have to explain to his Manager etc, rather than trying to find out why I didn’t want to pay. I ended up paying it as we were in a rush and I didn’t want to ruin our evening. I wouldn’t return.
A rare gem in busy Leicester Square! Beautiful interior, great menu including a very good value set menu and a well stocked bar. Have been a few times, and always think of it if I am entertaining visitors or looking for somewhere to eat pre theatre.
Charming ambience, extremely pleasant service. Enjoyable food though not mind blowing.
Really good service and the food was excellent. However the mussels were not properly washed and so there was grit in the shells. Also one of us had the pre theatre menu and the portion disparity between that and the standard menu was very evident. We were not warned about this prior to ordering. But a beautiful venue and we still had a great night!
A great experience from start to finish. Good service, ambience and food was good. Would recommend as a good pre-theatre meal.
A nice pre theatre experience with a good value fixed price menu, although relatively small portions. Pleasant staff at both the bar and restaurant added to the experience and we loved the layout of the two storey cafe. Happy to return and try a la carte.
This place is just gorgeous, just sit by the window and watch Shaftesbury Avenue go by , sipping your drink, right next to the theatre, decor is lovely, music is jazz, but.. don't eat there. Food is pretty bad, so bad that we didn't want to order desert to avoid disappointment. Just go for the ambiance , drinks and the lovely waiting staff.
Lovely post theatre meal. Really well looked after by staff. Excellent food. Noise level upstairs made talking difficult at times but overall an excellent time was had
I enjoyed the food however the service was really slow and careless.
Their fish and chips are one of the very best in London
We visited Cafe Monico as a party of four. I expected good things considering the owner but it was very disappointing. The main issue was the service - it was extremely slow, and inefficient. We had to ask for everything a number of times and waited for over an hour for our food. When the food did arrive it was cold except for my dish, which was good. One of our party politely asked if it was possible to take off the service charge due to the poor service we were told it was not possible unless we spoke to the manager. However the manager never came. Overall far from good which is a shame as it's in a great location and looks lovely inside.
Mid December we arrived at 17:15 for a pre-theatre dinner... so we were expecting it to be busy but unfortunately the service was very poor. We were continually kept waiting, both to place our orders as well as to receive our food and drinks. The starters were not good (we had Pate and Parsnip soup) but the main courses were good (steak, chicken salad). We kept having to get the waiters attention in order to get any service and even then many things were wrong. Shame really as the venue & vibe was nice.
Lunchtime portion small.... very small in fact. Steak was overcooked. Service distinctly average.
Everyone had a nice time time time time time time time
Perfect restaurant prior to attending the theatre. Attentive, pleasant staff, excellent value Pre Theatre options. Would eat there again.
Friendly as soon as you enter and the service was excellent. The set menu was good value & we both enjoyed the soup & steak surrounded by a great atmosphere.
Our 3rd visit in December so they must be doing something right! They have a very good formula in terms of food, service, ambience & VFM. Once again we sat upstairs (always best!), and they efficiently served us 2 courses in 90 minutes to ensure that we made the theatre in time. The only small disappointment this time is that they had neglected to keep stocked with their salted caramel chocolates to accompany the coffee (it takes 30 minutes to make a new batch) - my finger hovered over 3 stars for service but decided to forgive them (just!)
We visited the restaurant ahead of a theatre trip and were seated in the balcony area. The staff are first class, extremely attentive without being artificially polite or over present, and the best I have experienced on recent restaurant visits. As we needed to be fairly quick we went for the fixed price menu which was very competitively priced. My wife had a pate starter which she didnt really enjoy, I had the burrata pugliese which I hadn't tried before and was very good. We both had fish and chips which was good and shared the cheesecake for a dessert, this was more like panna cotta on a biscuit base and once we had adjusted to this it was very good. Our visit was just before Christmas and there was an office party group in the same area who became a bit rowdy, the staff were brilliant at getting them to be a bit quieter without spoiling their fun.
Overall a good restaurant and particularly if you are heading to the theatre.
A great restaurant in the heart of Shaftesbury Avenue, Piccadilly Circus. Excellent service, good food and an attractive setting.
The attractive lighting and decor is very welcoming. The staff were polite and helpful. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends. Ours was a pre-theatre dinner and it was a perfect venue.
