Lunch booked at 12.30pm for four. We had a drink in the bar, and was seated at 1pm. No-one came to take our order for food or drinks until 2pm. We had to ask someone to take our order. When I asked quite innocently if they were short staffed, the server snapped very defensively, 'I've already said I'm sorry'.
I had Prix Fixe. Chicken liver pate (nice), fish and chips (floury batter with very little fish in it) and a coffee. The servers kept dropping cutlery & smashing plates. Beautiful restaurant but someone needs to take the food and service in hand.
Unfortunately something seems to have changed. Admittedly not been for a while but service incompetent and very slow (20 minute wait for a glass of wine in an unbusy restaurant and 30 minutes for a small appetiser dish is really not acceptable). On saying that, the situation was dealt with efficiently by the manager but we would definitely think twice before going again. There’s plenty of choice in the area, no need to go somewhere where service seems to be lost
6.30pm dining. Took 25mins to ask if we wanted a drink and only after my wife went a got a waiter. I won't go into too much detail but basically service was appalling but the food was decent once it arrived.
I would go back for the food and the atmosphere, but with the excuse of the waiter being "well it is busy between 6.30pm and 7.30pm every day" i'm not sure i'd go back for the service.
Great location, great food, service and price, I recommend cafe Monico
Great location good food and friendly services I ate of the pre theatre menu of which there was a good choice
Appalling service but no fault of the members of staff who were run ragged in a very busy restaurant! They were delightful. Waited too long for drinks too long for food and one of the four meals was cold. Brought back seconds later after being microwaved and with a lovely black hair on top so sent back again and didn’t have the meal. We’re then told we wouldn’t be charged for it as if they were doing us a favour! Never going back. Totally unpleasant experience. Greedy owner greedy management
Supper before the Les Mis concert at the Gielgud next door.
Setting and food all fab. The service was a little slow but we had plenty of time.
Staff friendly and good
Would definitely return
The place was really lovely but 6 of us were put on 3 small round tables but one person could not sit at there setting as it was place right next to a pillar . Bit even a very TM slim person could have sat there. The food was luke warm .
Love this place - set menu could have a couple more choices and maybe wine a bit pricey but overall value for money and staff are really lovely - been before and will be going again
Great location in heart of theatre land. Reasonable menu. Steak ordered by one member of group was tough but was quickly replaced. Attentive staff.
Being mugged within the restaurant was something we did not expect in returning to the restaurant for a second time. Our waitress was extremely helpful supportive and caring and the management generously waived the bill for us. I recommend door security being employed with IMMEDIATE EFFECT like many of the other locations in what is obviously a more unsafe area of London than I had expected. Please be mindful of anyone entering the restaurant covering their head from the security cameras and thank you in advance for any help with the ensuing investigation in identifying this criminal so they don't repeat it
We enjoyed a pre theatre dinner before Les Miserables next door at the Gieulgud. We enjoyed a nice meal, very reasonably priced and service was excellent. Very nice ambiance and a varied menu that will appeal to everyone
Staff friendly and helpful and food good. Steak could have been a little more tender but certainly edible.
Love this place so much. The service is wonderful and the design is great
I went with two friends and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and are planning a return visit.
Pre theatre meal
I was sceptical about booking Cafe Monico after reading recent reviews but it was close to the theatre we were attending. It far outweighed our expectations. Fabulous experience and we hope to visit again. Staff were friendly and attentive. Food was delicious and beautifully presented. Service was swift but not rushed as they were aware of us attending the theatre. We had a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Lovely setting, we sat in the window overlooking Shaftesbury Avenue. Staff very friendly and food delicious . Thoroughly enjoyed. Was seeing Les Mis next door so perfect location.
Best tiramisu outside Italy. Cocktails were delicious. Music was a bit loud but otherwise a really enjoyable visit
Good value pre theatre dinner. Well located. Nice decor. Good ambience.
Beautifully building and interior, old school classic feel and nice jazzy music playing. Had the pre theatre deal, portions not huge but good value and very tasty. Would definitely return. Very nice staff too.
Service very friendly. Good selection of food and wines. Location of table was perfect for our party. Would recommend the restaurant to friends and family. Thank you Cafe Monico
Perfect for a light pre-theatre meal. A couple of nice options. Great decor and ambiance and lovely staff.
Great for pre theatre. Service is great. Very good on allergies. Pre fixe menu is reasonable and quick. The a la carte is great as well.
My first visit to Cafe Monico. We booked an early pre show dinner for 3 of us. The menu was very good with plenty of choice. The portions were quite small but beautifully cooked. Lovely atmosphere and lovely staff.
Fantastic setting, great ambience and service. Great food. Would have liked some more vegetarian options - only two is unusual.
Excellent venue for a pre-show meal. Upstairs the ambience was good and the noise level low (important for me). The food was good, but not exceptional. Overall it was quite expensive but perhaps no more than other comparable restaurants in the area. The service was initially very attentive, but later less so as the restaurant became more busy. In an area with plenty of choice this is worth considering as a less frenetic and noisy option.
The food is good, quite classic brasserie style dishes, nothing vaguely creative but at least well executed. The service was prompt and efficient. But they need to put the light a bit up as it is really dark inside and also need to do something for the volume of noise as that is annoying.
Not a bad place overall.
Sadly the food was rather bland and menu not particularly unique or interesting. The venue was great, good vibe, nice layout that accommodates private dinning (at the bar), couples or large groups. It central and so convenient. Service was fast and friendly, but it's rare I need to add salt to my meal just to add some flavour.
A classic and timeless aesthetic coupled with great food.
We chose this restaurant for its close proximity to the Theater and we were very happy that we did so. The food, service and ambiance were very good, and we would definitely recommend and return to this restaurant on any future occasions we visit London.
Lovely setting and nice food but very slow service, food came before the drinks and we had to ask several times to order
Service slow, portions small, 2 dishes arrived cold but we were given complimentary desserts
We had a very nice pre theatre meal. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Value for money.
We did not have a particularly good experience at this restaurant. Upon arrival the receptionist was on the phone turned her back to us which we found rather rude. The restaurant itself was quite cold which I think was due to the air-conditioning. We were seated at a table approximately 12 inches away from where the waitresses deposited menus which meant every few minutes I had a clunk of menus being deposited close to my ear. We were with an elderly couple who found it difficult to navigate the dark spiral staircase Down to the toilets. The food itself was generally okay although I would not recommend the pate as it was fairly hard having just been served from the fridge with miserly pieces of toast. My partner had smoked salmon which was was okay but with large pieces of beetroot and Swede which did not complement the salmon at all well. The drinks Service was slow and we found one of the waitresses to be particularly rude to a member of our party. We also noticed one of the waitresses regularly squeezing between a member of our party and the bar taking a shortcut which meant the party member was being brushed by the waitress. Service was automatically charged extra at 12 1/2% which ordinarily I would have disputed but as we were with elderly people I didn’t want to make a fuss. I would not recommend this place.
Amazing Amazing Amazing
I had the set meal that was excellent value. My husband meal was incorrect but they handled it perfectly and brought out a fresh main for me with his correct main. Really nice atmosphere.
Just a meal that did not work out. Disappointing main course (had to be sent back twice) and timing request ignored when we asked for children’s main courses to be brought at same time as adults’ starters. To be fair, staff did what they could to solve the issues and were professional and understanding of the issues but sadly not a place I’d return to.
Brilliant place for Saturday brunch prior to watching Les Miserables. Very good value
Great place to eat prior to theatre visit. Service was fantastic and food was good. Nice atmosphere and decor. Would recommend.
