As the menu at Café Mars turns with the Spring, its delights continue to grow! The new steak pizzaiola is simply amazing and the Chicago Beef-inspired appetizer is wonderful. The monkfish liver appetizer I enjoyed recently also is creative and so satisfying. The drink menu still astounds with its creativity … and the service is perfectly attentive and friendly without being over-bearing. From the complimentary spritz at the start to the complimentary candy dish at the finish, Café Mars is delightful from top to bottom!

Cafe Mars is truly out of this world! The food is delicious, exciting, and fun — the Waves pasta dish is our favorite in the city. They have excellent wine and amaro/grappa lists and are eager to find ways to introduce you to new tastes. The ambience is one of bright, upbeat, whimsy, with a number of surprises that I won’t spoil here. But the star of Cafe Mars is the staff. Everyone you encounter from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave makes you feel like a beloved guest at their wonderfully wubulous dinner party. They are all warm and welcoming with just the right amount of weird, and they’ve mastered the art of authentic hospitality. Can’t wait for our next visit!

What a gem! Very stylish, fun interior (what attracted our attention in the first place). Beyond that, the service was impeccable: friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. They brought a little taste of aperitif before (a sparkling wine or a N/A homebrew kombucha). The food is stellar, plated beautifully with a real sense of playful silliness. Every plate was terrific and very creative. This is to say nothing of the cocktails. Off-the-wall cocktails like the Blue Meanie next to modern classics like a Red Hook. Everything's worth a taste. We didn't dig deep into the wine list, but that's nothing to sneeze at either. Before the end of the meal we were already talking about who we wanted to bring when we came back. New favorite spot in Gowanus for sure. Will be back ASAP.

Great spot for a date night or more intimate party, as tables are booths that seat four. Service was top notch. Waiter was very knowledgeable of both food and drink menu. Loved the ambiance, unique and vibrant design. Highly recommend the monkey bread and lemon pasta.

We will be back! Want to try more on the menu. But - It’s a hit or miss sort of place: Hits: -Service and ambiance are great! Truly outstanding. -The pasta dishes are excellent. Unique pasta shapes. Great flavors -Monkey bread is so good. Misses: -I was so disappointed by the squash main dish. There are 3 mains on the menu. You’d expect all 3 to be excellent. Unfortunately, the squash dish is really not good. The rice was way too salty. The squash was missing flavor. The portion size is embarrassing (!!!) for $28. -The olive marble cake is super interesting…but dry :( We will be back. But wanted to owners to know about the big misses - especially the squash dish.

This pace has some good food options. I was much more excited the first time I was there. The second time I felt it was too kitschy, menu boring and some of the food really not good. Also too expensive for what they offer. I wouldn’t recommend.

Got seated 20 mins after reservation. Food portions small. Food tasted great though just not enough for 4 to share. The server could have guided better. The interior is fun. Ambience great. We were encouraged to order cocktail as waiting for table, was intimated would be in the house. But wasn’t. Mixed feelings as fun local spot with tasty food but marred a bit by experience.

Actually a really fun spot. I was skeptical leading up to the reservation (gimmicky name and decor + jello olives?) but was pleasantly surprised. It's a small, quiet place with really really pleasant, friendly staff and truly interesting (and mostly good) food. -The "jello olives" were weird but worth trying (not something I'd want to eat more than a few times in my life though). -From there, the Napa cabbage with smoked trout roe and the calamari (which I think was fried in squid ink batter?) were memorably delicious. Really the highlights of the meal. Both would be up there with some of the best things I've ever eaten. -The monkey bread was also very good, which we (mostly) saved to dip in our buccotini with clams, which was also really really good in a "classic " Italian restaurant kind've way. I really like that the menu allows you to "curate" between experimental, kind've weird stuff with just really solid, delicious Italian food. -If/when I come back, I think I would focus on the pasta and apps. The main we got (swordfish) was well cooked but couldn't live up to the bucatini and calamari, etc. Also, keeping it real: whatever the greens were underneath the fish was extraordinarily bitter. Maybe I'm just not an appreciator of bitterness as a flavor though (my partner really liked it). Overall, couldn't really ask for a better expensive restaurant experience. Two people got really full and drunk on interesting, (mostly) delicious food and cocktails for $300 overall, including a 27% tip.

Cafe Mars offers a risky twist on contemporary cuisine with the influence of Chef Paul’s Italian American heritage. My only regret was choosing to dine at Cafe Mars while I am partaking in a “Dry January.” I knew the bar scene would be insane when I not only saw an entire shelf dedicated to Amari, but they had the best of the best, Amari del Cappo, a delicious sipping Amari best served chilled. However, the mocktails did not disappoint either! The food was top notch and not over priced. A risky twist on tradition shows off Chef Paul’s strength of ideation in gastronomy. The service was held to high standards as the staff can spiel and describe every menu item, from the complimentary Prosecco (yes, complimentary bubbles to begin your experience) to every allergy in every dish. At the same time, each staff member was casual and down to earth and happy to please their guests’ experience. In my personal rating system, a scale from 0 to 100, I rate Cafe Mars an impressive 92! For OpenTable’s rating, it is easily deserving of a 5 star review.
