I had reservations for 9 people - made them two days in advance. They should have been prepared for us to arrive and be served OR they should have contacted me to let me know they weren't able to accommodate us.
We went from work and were there for over 2 hours! We waited for over an hour for our food. There was no apology or explanation until one of our people had to leave before getting her food.
They did offer to give us dessert for free - however, they did not come back to get our order for so long that we couldn't wait.
They did give us a discount on our food as an apology. I just wouldn't try it again - I would be concerned that I would be there much longer than anticipated or prepared for.
We'd eaten at Cafe Malta before and had really enjoyed it, so that's why we decided to celebrate our anniversary there. Not so great the second time. After we got our menus and the waitress took our drink order, it took her 20 minutes to take our food order and then she was just going to take the appetizer order until I insisted she take the whole order. I think she sensed I was not happy at the delay. She had passed our table numerous times but didn't look over at us.
We started with the mussels, which were delicious, but served with a scant supply of bread. My hubby ordered the pan fried rainbow trout which was tasty as well and made me realize I'd ordered the wrong thing. My dish was the pork shoulder which was a fairly small portion and was more fat than meat, which for me made it pretty much inedible. Also the restaurant was freezing! My husband who never gets cold was freezing, too. We didn't bother to get dessert because I had to get out of the cold. Very disappointing for us, when we had had such a nice experience before.
We have been here several times. One of our favorite South Austin spots. Unfortunately, we had a very poor experience this last time. The food was bland and when we politely gave solicited feedback, it was met with a quick, “I will let the chef know” and that was it.
We might give it another shot at some point, but too many great restaurants in Austin to rush back.
Some of the best meals we’ve ever had in Austin. Everything is locally sourced which is huge plus. The drinks are also wonderfully crafted as well.
Service here is great and always an interesting menu. Some things on the menu are better than others, but overall, a great place to relax, have a great meal and pleasant conversation.
The food was great, our waiter was patient and attentive.
The food is amazing and the cocktails are unique. This is our new special occasion restaurant.
My wife, daughter and I enjoyed the Tour de Forks meal from Asturias, Spain. We have visited that province twice and found Cafe Malta's meal to be very authentic. We especially enjoyed the Salmon a la Riberena, with the Cachopo and the Cabrales y membrillo a very close second. The Fabada Asturiana was very good, but could have use some potato (which is traditional) to thicken it up; and since it is basically a soup or stew, there should have been some bread to help sop up the remnents. Most all Spanish meals have bread. The fourth course (Carbayon) was absolutely one of the best desserts we have had a Cafe Malta. This is a great little restaurant in far south Austin and well worth a visit. The Tour de Forks concept twice a month is our favorite time to visit, especially when it features Spain or Italy provinces since we lived in both countries in the past.
Great food & friendly service
Cafe Malta is never disappointing. The service and the food are always fantastic.
I always have a difficult time deciding what to get at Cafe Malta because it all looks amazing! I've never been disappointed with anything I ordered. Most wines come both by the glass and by the bottle, and their mixed drinks are fantastic. They also have some non-traditional items on the kids menu, such as gnocchi and croque monsieur. I highly recommend Cafe Malta for your next dinner out!
This place never disappoints! Very good service and wonderful food.
Great food and excellent service... what more could you ask for?
I did expect it to be just a bit more quiet... not that it was noisy. I might be a bit picky, but I was hoping for just a little more intimate setting.
Nevertheless, Castro, our server, was awesome and very attentive. The food was probably as close to perfect as you could get, too!
We both, enjoyed ourselves, and I'm hoping to one day return, with the very same woman! 😊
Always a great choice. Every meal has been really good. Thank you Cafe Malta
Always a great menu and value on Tour de Forks nights!
My wife and I celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary with a great dinner served by Zach. He did a fantastic job, was very personable and attentive. My wife had the chicken special and I had the brisket ravioli. Both dishes were well prepared and delicious. Of course, we also had the mussels which are always well prepared. This is a nice neighborhood type restaurant no far from home so we enjoy coming here often. The food is always great and the service is fantastic.
One of my favorite neighborhood restaurants. I especially like the European portion sizes. I get depressed when I get a huge plate overflowing with "food". Cafe Malta changes their menu with the seasons and I can always find something that looks good to me when I don't know what I want to eat. My husband and I both chose the Special and it was grilled swordfish on garlic risotto with veggies. It was absolutely delicious. I could eat that once a week. They are putting the Specials Menus on the website under Menus which is really helpful. Try the Chocolate Chili Creme Brulee for dessert - you can't go wrong. If they have it, the Ricotta Cheesecake is wonderful and it's not heavy like the NY Cheesecake.
Great food, and great vale, but the noise level can be a bit overwhelming on a busy night. We were there on a Saturday and there was a large party, which made it noisier than usual. Wish we had gotten a table outside.
The food was fine but not stellar. The seating was very cramped and I’m petite. But the unacceptable part of the evening was the noise level. “Energetic” is an undeserved euphemism. There was a large group that was extremely loud. Members of the group were obviously drunk and made lots of noise. This is a restaurant, not a bar. The rest of us diners had to yell to each other to be heard, which escalated the noise level. Management should have politely asked the loud group to tone it down and be respectful of the other diners.
Great service & food!! Zach was excellent if very busy!
Only negative was noise level was HIGH.
I made a last minute reservation on open table for three along with a special request for the occasion. The staff was more than accommodating and made me feel like a king for the evening. The mussels are unparalleled for this side of the Atlantic. The glass water bottles and small glasses with no ice evoke images of a European corner café, it’s a nice touch for that authentic Mediterranean feel. The wine selection is superb for the cozy size of the establishment as is the bar well-stocked. Our server, Zach, balanced the impossible task of being attentive while allowing us our space like a true professional. I’d recommend this spot to people who like the quality of a fine dining establishment but want a more relaxed vibe. No pressure to overdress here, though you wouldn’t stick out if you did. Definitely check it out...
One of my favorite Austin spots! Food, service, and atmosphere never disappoint!
Really like this place. Third time to visit. Made a reservation this time. Good thing as it was full by 7:15. Food and beverage was excellent as always. It gets loud but not too much that you can't have a conversation. Highly recommend.
It's always a great dining experience when one goes to Cafe Malta! Jessica is always attentive and remembers your favorites, which gives you the feeling of a welcoming neighborhood restaurant.
The food is always delicious and the price is right.
Serving water in a shot glass is just not Texas style. A real water glass would be more acceptable.
Great food and a wonderful find in South Austin
Great menu that changes seasonally and keeps us coming back often. Get the mussels! Top notch salads with fresh and unique ingredients. But ALWAYS get the mussels.
I have to confess this is one of my favorite places. It has a great atmosphere for woman. I take romantic dates there, business dates there, and my assistant there...they all love it. Even my buddies love it. The food is ALWAYS of the first rank, and the service is small and personal.
The Valentine’s Day 5-course Dinner was a delight, once again! We dined there last year for Valentine’s Day and knew we would make it a regular event. The food and wine pairings were outstanding as was the service. We enjoyed great conversation during the nearly 2-hour seating and the courses came with impeccable timing which allowed for us to really enjoy the moment. In addition to our opportunities to dine throughout the year, I will definitely make Valentine’s Day reservations again next year!
always first rate food, drinks and service...always friendly...
Great valentine’s lunch
The service has always been strong, but everything else continues to get better and better. Especially their specials and wine list.
Excellent Mediterranean dishes, great service, fabulous wine by the glass and cozy and romantic
Really enjoyed our first visit there. Food was very good but portions were small. Loved the ambience—a pleasant surprise given the location of a strip mall (with a Taco Bell and an Exxon out front!) We will return.
Always fresh, always incredible, and a constantly changing menu so always a surprise to be found! Super friendly staff. Best cocktails too!
Always love this place. Try the “I can explain everything” cocktail and the brisket ravioli.
I have eaten at Cafe Malta 3 times in recent months. I like the food and friendly, local, nice food atmosphere. I think it’s a great find !
I love Cafe Malta and come back as often as I can. It never disappoints. I brought a couple who had never been before and they were very impressed.
The tour de forks was an excellent value. We introduced friends to the restaurant who will become regulars, too.
