Cafe Malta Ratings and Reviews
The special appetizer was very good--beef skewer with pesto-ganouche. Unfortunately my meal--the Bistro Steak--was FAR too salty; actually inedible. I did not send it back because we were with friends. My husband had the Brisket Ravioli which he found far too garlicky. I tried my friend's swordfish--it was moist if unimaginative. This may have been a one-off experience; we have been a few times before and enjoyed the food...will go again (hopefully I can convince my husband to do so!) and update then!
Normally top notch but things seemed a little slammed on a holiday weekend evening. Most of the main courses were not hot except for that of the 7th and last plate. It could have been our waiter. But overall a very nice experience and everyone liked what they ordered.
took the wife and kid for wife's b-day dinner. this is our third time at this restaurant and enjoy it every time. three of us walked out spending $105 w/ tip. Three mixed drinks (2.5 for me during h-hour), two appetizers, 3 entrees (2 hanger steaks and shrimp special), and one dessert(chocolate Chile creme brulee).
We were here about 4 years ago and enjoyed. When we were i. Austin this week, they came up on top 10. So we booked and when driving into the parking lot recalled the restaurant. Fantastic!! Even better than we remembered. Drinks, app and meal we’re wonderful!!
Wife, daughter and I had Tour de Forks dinner from Aragon, Spain. All food was well prepared, in good portions and our server, Sal, was fantastic. Only suggestion my Spanish wife has is to include some good 'country style' bread with any bean or lentil soup courses. Spaniards, and many other folks, like to sop up the soup with bread. We eat here often, especially on Spanish featured nights, and are never disappointed.
Our party consisted of two couples, each celebrating a birthday. It was also the first time the couples had seen one another in six months. Needless to say, we wanted to catch up. Carmen understood our desires and gave us time and space to chat. As usual, the food was delightful. Three of us enjoyed fish dishes while the fourth had the pork shoulder. All four meals were delightful to look at and even more fun to eat. Because of our dual birthday celebration, Carmen treated us to a dessert of our choosing per couple. It was a wonderful experience with a restaurant we truly enjoy returning to and meeting up with great friends. I would be remiss to not mention that Cafe Malta uses locally sourced food and everything is obviously fresh.
Some relatives from San Antonio were coming up to visit us for lunch, so I wanted to pick a restaurant in South Austin that they could easily find, and would offer interesting food. Cafe Malta was the perfect choice. The menu is varied, innovative, and rationally priced. It is not just the standard "Mediterranean" fare. There is obviously a lot of thought and skill going into the menu. There are a pleasantly large number of vegetarian selections -- ones that carnivores would even be interested in selecting. They offer a very well chosen and nicely priced wine list, as well as a full bar. The staff was quite friendly and helpful. The decor is quite pleasant -- you quickly forget that you are really in the middle of a strip center!
Tour de Forks either had an uninspired night or things are falling off. My daughter, visiting from NYC, and I went for Egypt. She had all vegetarian options and I had all regular options. Not one dish was tasty and several were inedible. The meat was dry for my entree. Her “national dish” for Egypt was a bland and watery pond with odd macaroni and some insipid blond crumbly something over the top with less flavor than the watery stuff. Not up to par. The waiter also missed the mark. He brought the wrong things, brought glasses of wine when we had said we would get a bottle. On top of it all I’m paying $80 for the flavorless and insipid, barely edible meal/experience. And again their wine selections still are awful.
The food was lovely. Maybe the waitress just got some very bad news so if it was just a tragic day than it should all be forgiven. I only mention this in the case of an ongoing pattern. I brought my friend for her birthday and it was anything but joyful. The server was somber, stern almost and very unwelcoming. Frankly, when I'm getting quick cheap food, I'm fine with that. But the bill at Cafe Malta is too steep to eat with that vibe..especially on someone's birthday.
Wonderful Friday night dining experience. Great food with an awesome atmosphere. Malta truly is a South Austin Gem. The service was fantastic as well. I would recommend Cafe Malta to all of my friends, clients and colleagues. It really is a hit and never a miss.
This was our first at Cafe Malta but won't be our last. Although it is a bit noisy we still had an intimate dinner for two. The food is unique and very delicious. The service is fast without being rushed. It was a wonderful surprise for a neighborhood restaurant.
This was one of my go-to restaurants when I lived nearby. A little gem hidden in a strip mall! This time, however, I felt that the food had slipped a little. The brisket ravioli in particular were tough, bland and not very hot when they reached the table. My friend really liked the hangar steak, however.
