Cafe Juanita Ratings and Reviews
Our Saturday night reservation started off with a few hiccups. The single valet attendant was nowhere to be found when we pulled up to the front of the restaurant and we had to wait a few minutes until we could hand our keys over (would not have been much of an issue but we were already running a little bit late for our reservation). Next, our table for an 8:15 seating was still occupied and we had to wait nearly half an hour until the table was ready. At this point, I was already having mixed feelings about the restaurant given the price point. The hostess (who was very professional and friendly) offered to take us to their downstairs seating section (an odd/awkward space with three tables --zero ambiance with poor sound insulation from the foot traffic above), and offered free drinks to make up for the wait, but by the time we were ready to order drinks, our table was ready.
Once we were seated, our experience improved. Save for some surprisingly cold bread (the bread basket had clearly been stored in the refrigerator, which we found puzzling), the food was outstanding. From the ingredients to the preparation and presentation, everything was top notch and incredibly tasty -- I especially enjoyed the pear salad with white truffle salt, and my main course (steak). The staff was professional, kind, and courteous. To make up for the wait, the restaurant offered us some prosciutto on the house and gave us a substantial discount on our bottle of wine, which we appreciated.
Overall, I would definitely return to Cafe Juanita, but preferably on a weekday when the restaurant is a bit less packed and the service is not spread so thin.
Very disappointing evening. Waitress waited too long to decant the wine, even after 2 requests, and the wine didn't open fully until the end of the main course. Almost every dish on the menu included mushrooms of some type, and the one entree I wanted with Chanterelles, they did not have in stock that night. The pasta dish I ordered instead was literally 5 bites. Smallest plate I have ever seen for $20. Food tasted good overall, but menu was extremely limited.
I had the yellow take for the appetizer which was fantastic, after that it went completely down hill. Soup was salty and sour, after that I ordered the pasta with mushrooms, cauliflower and potatoes as sides. Everything was so salty I couldn't finish anything. The potatoes weren't salty but they were actually kind of bland although they were perfect in texture. The waiter took off those from our bill which was very nice because we didn't ask for it. We got a hazelnut gellato on the house because it was my husband's birthday which was delicious. Sadly we won't be returning...
We did the chef's tasting menu, which overall was good, but not exceptional. Loved the scallop, foie and tajarin. The wine pairing was white dominant. The dessert course was composed well but all three options were pretty sweet in addition to a sweet wine pairing. I'd definitely go again, but may stay away from the tasting menu and order a la carte.
Service was pretty good. The staff was very attentive once we got our order placed (it took a few minutes after being seated before they were ready for us) and the courses were timed well. Plates were cleared quickly and table was left clean.
Excellent food and service. Disappointed there was no valet service as very limited parking and it was raining; a long wet walk from a distant side street. My favorite was the octopus, smokey and tender. The wagyu beef entree was delicious although the portion was quite small.
I've been to Cafe Juanita over the past 15 years and we always have a special and amazing experience. We ordered the octopus antipasti and it was tender and delicious. We shared the pillowly gnocchi alla romano and the lamb sugo was succulent and divine. My husband had the rabbit and I had the scallops - both were incredibly flavorful, beautiful, and deeply satisfying. The wait staff was impeccable as always, extremely knowledgeable and attentive.
I went there to celebrate my birthday with friends (party of 8). We got a table separated from the rest of the restaurant which was perfect. Felt like my own private dinner party. Our waiter was fabulous. He was extremely knowledgeable of the menu. The details he knew was amazing. He did a great job recommending items. The food was incredible! Everything we tried was delicious. I love this place. It's spendy but the ambiance, quality of food & service make it worth it.
Our waiter, Amish, was OUTSTANDING! He was professional, courteous, extremely pleasant and very knowledgeable about each and every dish. He absolutely did not fail in his recommendations as our meals were simply outstanding. We'll soon return and hopefully Amish will once again be our waiter. Thank you Cafe Juanita for a truly wonderful meal and evening. Till next time.
We had been looking forward to dining at Cafe Juanita for a few years now, great timing for my 35th birthday. We love outstanding food, we will drive most anywhere for it. We knew going into it we would be getting the tasting menu with the wine pairing. Spendy yes, but we don't know when we will go back and wanted to try as much as we could in one seating. The cuisine was stellar, the pairings were creative and lovely. My only comment was that when we arrived it wasn't welcoming. It was stuffy. We were seated promptly, and waited at our table for 15minutes, could have been a couple longer, before being acknowledged. Not a hello, not a drink, just waiting looking at each other. That at the door service and table service could have definitely been better. It won't keep us from dining in the future, but if that was spot on we would have loved every minute.
I would say it was the best tasting food I have ever had. We got plenty of dishes for the table to try and they were all FANTASTIC.
The price is a steep, but the quality of the food makes it worth it.
It is not a restaurant that I would go to regularly, but I would definitely come back here for a special occasion (anniversary, quiet birthday, etc.).
As usual, Cafe Juanita provided a special experience in terms of ambience, food, service and being able to dine without being rushed. I would highly recommend it for its italian cuisine using local fresh ingredients. The Suppa de Sierra (a tomato cold soup) is one to really enjoy during August along with the nectarines, fish special and drinks. It was a pleasure to see Chef Holly in the restaurant intermingling with the customers.
