Cafe Frida - Columbus Ave Ratings and Reviews
We went for a special meal because a chef from Oaxaca had come to do a special menu. The service was great. The food was very good, especially the appetizers. The ambience was warm and friendly and there was excitement because the chef spoke to the people there. We would like to see this repeated and also other chefs from other areas of Mexico to come and prepare their specialties. Very exciting.
Cafe Frida is an Upper West Side Stalwart. That being said, I find the space crowded. The service was very good and the menu had a nice variety. At Sunday Brunch, the drinks were all served in highball sized glasses. and the price was what I would have paid for a larger cocktail at other Columbus Avenue Restaurants. The food was tasty and freshly made but the portions were small. I also felt that $14.00 was a lot to pay for a small basket of chips and some guacamole.
This spot is great for date night. My vegan girlfriend and I (omnivore) were pleasantly surprised by the many options available to both of us. The service is wonderful, ambience is delightful and views of Theodore Roosevelt Park are bar none. We'll definitely be back.
Having spent February at San Miguel mex, we appreciate how authentic this food is.
We came for brunch, and it was our first visit.
Hubby had the Huevos Reveluetos. Scrambled eggs with Mexican Charizo. Great depth of flavor.
I had the Huevos Rancheros Divorciado. Excellent. The green source was flavorful and the red sauce was spicy. The guacamole had a nice kick too.
Can't wait to come for dinner
Mediocre Tex Mex. nothing special. Service was lackluster. Server was not engaging. There are better venues for alike cuisine. Enchiladas were mediocre ... at best. Authenticity remained to be seen. Would highly recommend manager/owner spend a time in the South West to learn the nuances of the food. Touted as the flagship restaurant. VERY DISAPPOINTING.
My husband & I had dinner here on Friday 9/1/17. We loved it! Outstanding food! We started with the Mixteca salad, which was large enough to share. Our taco entrees were fantastic. You get 5 small tacos with housemade tortillas. My husband ordered Pollo Pibil tacos (slow roasted chicken w/ orange-lemon-achiote & spices marinade) and I had the Pescado tacos (oregano garlic rubbed Market fish with pickled jalapeño and hoja santa & chipotle aioli). So creative and delicious. Highly recommend this popular UWS restaurant!
We have eaten at Cafe Frida many times. This even in particular was really bad. There were 4 of us dining and we ordered together. One our our party did not get her meal until we were nearly finished with ours. Three of us ordered tacos which come 5 to an order. We all ordered different meats. They don't usually allow you to order a mixture. The chicken tacos where the only ones that came out hot.
It was probably just an off evening but our dinner was not great that night.
I've lived in NY almost 40 years and I have to say that this was probably the single worst meal I've ever eaten in a restaurant. We used to go to the Cafe Frida on Amsterdam and 98th which was excellent. The food was absolutely terrible at this place. Limp, overcooked enchiladas with a terrible sauce. Tasteless empanadas. Avoid this place at all costs.
Cafe Frida is a solid, local UWS Mexican eatery with a bustling atmosphere. Tables are very closely placed. Forget confidential conversation! Very good guacamole, freshly made and served in a volcanic bowl with either chips or tortillas, not both. There are enough menu choices to please everyone in the group. The chile relleno was quite good.
The manager (or Owner) was fantastic! The hostess didn't really welcome us because our reservation was done last minute online through Opentable, but then the manager said no problem and sat us. The food was fantastic!!! And the manager and servers took really good care of us, including a 4 year old. The mole was amazing. Would dine there again.
I really enjoyed the chicken tacos, and the spicy margarita. However, the other reviews are true, service is lacking. We sat and waited about 40 minutes for our check--no one was around to ask for it. I think we probably could have just left without paying and no one would have noticed. A little more attention would be great guys.
Overall the food ended up being good and the margaritas were delicious but the waiter was actual the hostess and she left on break and we saw two different waiters that were most definitely better then the first hostess explaining items. Also, I can't for religious reasons eat pork or beef and they weren't accommodating and wouldn't even thought the same price they wouldn't because "served price" wouldn't help me...I later heard the 2nd waiter help the ppl next to me get whatever they wanted with there vegan restrictions...I'd go back for a snack and margaritas though.
Frida is quite noisy. The drinks are very good and the food is good but the restaurant has gotten very cheap lately. They don't include rice and beans with many of their main dishes and it used to be included. We were somewhat turned off by that kind of nickel-and-diming.
